Late Night Music Part 49..............."Superheroes"

Ever since we were little kids, we have dreamed of superheroes. We either wanted to be one, watch a movie about one, or sometimes even wanted one to come save us. It's like Lassiter said after we saw "Spider Man" in the theater in 2002, "dude seriously if you saw that movie in like 5th grade you'd be going to school trying to do all those moves". Superheroes can be literal or figurative, but are always powerful. In thinking of that, some of the most powerful music of our time has been written on that same theme. Please note that the song "Hero" by Nickelback will not be found anywhere on this list, if you were looking for it, please stop now.

In order to be considered for this list, the song title had to contain the name of a real or fictional superhero, or simply the words "superhero" or "hero". Also receiving votes in this category were "Hero Of the Day" by Metallica, "Superhero Music" by Fingathing, and "Ode To A Superhero" by Weird Al Yankovic.

"Superman's Song"- Crash Test Dummies. Most people forget that Crash Test Dummies actually had a song come out before "Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmm" in 1991 off of their debut album "The Ghosts That Haunt Me". As would be the norm for all of their songs, the video is completely abstract and seemingly has nothing to do with their songs. I really think they were drunk when they thought of video ideas because there is no sign of Superman OR Tarzan in this video. Also, if you really listen to the song, it is told like Superman has recently died.

"Superman (It's Not Easy)"- Five For Fighting. I love this song! Even though the name "Superman" is never mentioned in this song, it's obvious that this song is Superman talking about the difficulties in his life. As I mentioned before, I love how everyone thinks that Five For Fighting is a band, but it is simply the stage name of John Ondrasik. I also love how we have another video about Superman without any sign of Superman in the video.

"Superman"- Eminem. I love this song by Eminem not only because it's banging, but I'm glad that Eminem has a song that isn't all about how much he's hated by the media, other rappers, how difficult his life was, or how we "shouldn't judge him". This song actually makes me laugh though, it's probably Eminem's most comical song and the portrayal of slutty music groupies he probably meets on the road is probably on point. I also like how he basically brings himself down to earth by saying he's just a normal guy and not "superman". A third video with superman in the title without a single shot of Superman himself.......let's move on.

"Macho Man"- Village People. I don't know who Macho Man is, but our favorite flaming gay guys in Halloween costumes made us want to know who Macho Man really was after this 1978 hit. You know, for a group that was a moderately to highly successful group at any point in the late 70's, this budget looks seriously low budget. Also, while not all of the members of the Village People are gay, I think it's pretty obvious that their message and purpose was to appeal to gay men all over the world. I think they seriously did a good job of that. I had to watch this video again just to watch them dance- what great entertainment value!

"Superwoman"- Alicia Keys. Watching this video makes me think one thing immediately......I really need more Alicia Keys on here. She might look better in this video than she has in any other since "You Don't Know My Name". All my friends out there who are raising children on their own should use this song as inspiration. Alicia Keys looks like a Superhero herself in this video- unbelievable ending to this video. Man I love Alicia Keys!

"Superwoman"- Karyn White. Most people forget about Karyn White and her brief success in the late 1980's. Her self-titled 1988 album put out 3 Top 10 hits including this one, which was in the middle. Another "girl power" song- it's funny how 2 songs called "Superwoman" can be different, but similar in alot of ways. Fellas, please listen to this song. Ladies, I'm helping you all out today- don't forget it!

"Spyderman"- Another Bad Creation. As I've said many times, "Coolin' At The Playground Ya Know" by Another Bad Creation is the first CD I ever bought. This song is featured on that album and features Boyz II Men in the background (as do most songs on the album actually). Word of advice to all of the young hip/hop groups out there who try to look hard and sport street cred.............don't have a song about a superhero and comic books on your CD- and people wonder why ABC didn't do anything after this album.

"Hero"- Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey's 1993 album "Music Box" is still one of my favorite albums ever, even though I kinda keep that a secret. I seriously can't watch this video without tearing up. What an amazing song, video, and an amazing woman.

"Hero"- Enrique Iglesias. It is important to note that this is the first ever song to appear on "Late Night Music" in English and Spanish. As you can see from the English and Spanish versions, it is basically the same video with Enrique simply lip synching different words. The day will come when I finally decide to sing this song in karaoke. Easily one of my all time favorite songs to sing along to.

"Super Hero"- Daze. This dance group from Denmark had 2 successful albums in Europe before breaking up in 1999. This title track off of their debut album, has still proven to be their most popular song. This song sounds like it should be on "Dance Dance Revolution". I would also like to congratuate Daze for not sounding like other Euro Dance groups Aqua and Toy Box and having high pitched shrieking sounds that make you want to bust our your eardrums. Pretty catchy song here, but I thought you had to actually have to be able to dance in order to be called a "dance group".

"Cupid's Chokehold"- Gym Class Heroes. Ok, I took a quick poll, and Cupid DOES count as a super hero. With that being said, this song by New York rap group is quite entertaining. If you notice that this version might sound a bit different from the original, that's because the official video uses a different video than the version that was featured on their 2004 album "The Papercut Chronicles". I've never heard of that. Lead singer Travie McCoy who plays the main character in the video is lucky because he seriously is the perfect person to play the role of that person in this video. Huge bonus points for the new female cupid at the end of the video.
