Late Night Music Part 47............"Lois Einhorn Is A MAN!"

If you think about it, the music industry can be a very sexist business. Even in today's time, female band members are few and far between other than the occasional background vocalist. Other than solo acts in country and r & b and the obvious female pop stars, roles for women in music have always been limited. However, there is always the ladies who break the norm and go out and lead a band that rocks, and sometimes it's a band full of boys. Making themselves obvious targets for unfair assumptions and unfair expectations, these ladies are still ground breakers in the industry. In order to be considered for this list, a band had to feature a female lead singer. "Girl Groups" like Wild Orchid, SWV, Xscape, All Saints, or The Pointer Sisters were not considered. Also, any solo female act was not considered.

Also receiving votes in this category were "We Got the Beat" by the Go-Go's, "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" by Gladys Knight and The Pips, "All That She Wants" by Ace of Base, and "Closer to Fine" by The Indigo Girls.

Katrina and the Waves were disqualified due to being on a list last week. Sorry, I also had to leave off the Carpenters in order to retain my "heterosexual" status.

"Lovefool"- The Cardigans. This hit from the 1996 remake modern film version of "Romeo and Juliet" put our friends from Sweden on the map with their one and only mainstream hit in the United States (the song was also featured in "Cruel Intentions", but no one remembers it just due to "Bittersweet Symphony" stealing all it's thunder..........I smell a new entry on that note). The funny thing about the song is that it drew criticism from many of the band's fans across the globe just due to it's difference from the rest of the album and from the band's usual sound which had made them widely popular in Europe and Japan. Lead singer Nina Persson is another example of the people of Scandinavia trying to fool us. Think about it, every time you see a famous woman from that part of the globe they seem to be beautiful, but then you see the average woman and you know it's a joke. So, is that really her singing?

"Don't Dream It's Over"- Sixpence None The Richer. Great live version of a cover of Crowded House's 1985 hit. I think Leigh Nash has a very distinctive voice and I think she is SO cute! I love how they are southern band that didn't fall into the normal stereotypical country or pop genre, even after moving to Nashville. Bonus points for this song being a cover.

"Linger"- The Cranberries. For the longest time, I thought lead singer Dolores O'Riordan was Sinead O'Connor, and ironically, they are both from Ireland. So, you can laugh all you want, but that's really not that bad of a correlation. It's important to not that this song could easily have been featured in the "Great Song, Too Bad The Rest Of Your Songs Suck" entry. I have NEVER liked The Cranberries, and yes Michelle, I know you loved them in high school, but they still suck. Whoever can tell me the lyrics of the first verse without looking them up gets to pick my next topic- can't understand a word she says. Like I said, I'm not a fan of the band, but this song is SO catchy, and I love how it was used in the movie "Click".

"Brass In Pocket"- The Pretenders. The more I read about The Pretenders, it's almost like Katrina and the Waves copied them. Chrissy Hynde is from Ohio, but moved to England in 1973 after dropping out of Kent State. She quickly formed the Pretenders and they hit it big with this song off of their debut and self-titled album. Bonus points for the 1970's British "music video", but good lord Chrissy Hynde is UGLY! Quite possibly the worst lip syching I've ever seen in a music video.

"Eternal Flame"- The Bangles. One of the girl bands that went against the flow. Susanna Hoffs always came off as so rebellious to me, and it's kinda hot. I always loved how the Bangles would make random appearances on the "Gilmore Girls" because they were Lorelai Gilmore's favorite band. (The fact I know that is seriously scary). Interesting fact about this song is that they thought of the name after visiting Graceland and seeing the eternal flame on Elvis's grave.

"I Miss You"- Klymaxx. Ok this is without a doubt my favorite video on this list just from a mere comedy standpoint. First of all, the real lead singer of Klymaxx doesn't even sing this song. Bernadette Cooper was the usual lead singer, and plays the bass on this song. Instead, Joyce Irby (is that your aunt Natalie?), who was the usual bass player, sang one of her few lead vocals for the band on this song. Second, not only do they look like they are not really playing (seriously, just watch the drummer), they look like a group of ladies you see shopping together at the mall. Oh yeah, the keyboard player's hair is hilarious- is that Tempestt Bledsoe?. Also, I hope she is COGIC because I don't know of many people wearing dresses in bands. This video also shows that kids were being used randomly in R&B music videos long before the slow jams of the 1990's. Bonus points for having the random token white bus driver at the end of the video.

"Dreams"- Fleetwood Mac. Ok, this one barely gets in because I know Stevie Nicks wasn't always the lead singer, but I'm counting it. Fleetwood Mac was one of the first bands to have worldwide success with a female lead singer with "Rumours" being one of the best selling albums of all time. The band themselves even said they were sick of it- that's bad. However, this song was written about all the drama going on in the band. Christina and Jon McVie were divorcing. Lindsey Buckinham and Stevie Nicks were ending their 8 year relationship due to Stevie Nicks being involved with Mick Fleetwood. That's way too many love triangles for one band, and I think because of it, Fleetwood Mac is the only band to have a 2 part "Behind the Music". Even the Beatles didn't get that. Perfect example of tensions that can be present in a band but yet they can still make incredible music, as Fleetwood Mac stayed together another 11 years before going on a 10 year hiatus.

"I Love Rock N' Roll"- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. I surprisingly left them off of my "And Your Bird Can Sing" list, as they would qualify. This video is interesting because the whole black and white thing makes them look tough.

"Misery Business"- Paramore. I know alot of you give me crap for liking Paramore, but I'm sorry, Hayley Williams is awesome. First of all, she is from Mississippi. Second, she's hot. Third, this song, their breakthrough single off their album "Riot!" simply rocks. I love how the song and the video talk about stereotypical high school gossip bullcrap and talk about how petty all of that stuff really is in the long run. Bonus points for the song being on Guitar Hero.

"The World Is New"- Save Ferris. Save Ferris is a band I forget about alot just because after their 2002 break up, they were mainly known for covers of "Come On Eileen" and "I Want You To Want Me", but if you had been reading all the time, you would already know this. They got big during the "ska revolution" of the late 90's, and stayed big on the West Coast. Monique Powell shows off her great voice on this song- but 2 funny things stand out. First, is the saxophone player playing and singing at the same time? Second, doesn't Monique Powell look like Ricki Lake? I'm just saying. Also, I usually don't care, but women, don't wear royal blue nails with an all black dress- it just doesn't work.

"New"- No Doubt. Yes, I know I've used this one before, but I refuse to put anything on here from "Tragic Kingdom" and I know you all will be pissed if I don't put them on here. I'm sorry, I just never got into them. Love this song though.

"Make It Real"- The Jets. Wow, The Jets broke a "Late Night Music" record tonight by going 44 entries before being written about again- congratulations guys! The Wolfgramm family, Polynesian Mormons from Minnesota, built on their 1980's success with this hit which was their last top 40 hit and the last single off of their hit album "Magic". I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It was easy to replace members in this band, because the siblings would simply replace each other because their father turned their mother's womb into a clown car. However, on a serious note, lead singer Elizabeth Wolfgramm is a breast cancer survivor and was actually diagnosed at the young age of 22. Even after doctors said she would never have children, she is a mother of 5.

"California Dreamin'"- The Mamas and the Papas. The original hippy group- I have always been a closet fan of them. The craziest thing about the whole band is that 3 of them have died in sudden ways. Only Michelle Phillips is still alive. I always liked their look because they just seem like normal people and not your typical band. I think that actually really added to their success. Bonus points for the black and white video- I love the 60's.

"Somebody To Love"- Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane went against the norm in the 1960's like the Mamas and the Papas and had a female lead singer with band slut Grace Slick. Seriously, she's a good singer and all, but they should call her Grace "hot potato" Slick she's been passed around so much. Cool song here Jefferson Airplane showed that you could be a cool psychedelic rock group no matter who was your lead singer.

BONUS VIDEO- "We Built This City On Rock N' Roll"- Starship. They go from psychedelic rock to........THIS?
