Late Night Music Cinco de Mayo Edtion Part 43.................."En Espanol"

In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, I thought it only appropriate to include those Spanish songs that make wanna dance like a salsa dancing fool. While many of these songs were originally recorded in English, some were originally in Spanish and only became famous after being recorded in English. It's important to recognize and understand Latino heritage and Latino music as part of American music and part of American culture, and while the majority of these artists are Mexican, great Latin music comes from all over the world. Obviously, in order to qualify for this list, the song had to be completely in Spanish even if it had an English version. (For example, "Bailamos" by Enrique Iglesias and "Uno Noche" by 98 Degrees would both be disqualified). Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my Mexican friends and to everyone else out there- take it easy on the margaritas.

"La Bamba"- Los Lobos. Los Lobos brought back this old Mexican folk song made famous by Ritchie Valens for the 1987 movie of the same name about Valens. Lou Diamond Phillips makes an appearance in the video due to his role of Ritchie Valens in the movie. "La Bamba" is actually a Mexican dance from the Mexican province Veracruz primarliy used at weddings. Ritchie Valens simply merged the song with rock to add to the Mexican flavor of the song. I love this song- huge bonus points for being on "Guitar Hero".

"Heroe"- Enrique Iglesias. Spanish version of the huge Enrique Iglesias hit "Hero" from his 2001 album "Escape". Most people forget that Enrique is in fact the son of Latin Music mega star Julio Iglesias and while starting out in Mexican music, is actually from Spain. For some reason, Jennifer Love Hewitt was a huge choice to be in music videos in the early 2000's (see "Boy Bands"), but I can't say I blame the artists- seriously........just look at her. I have always really enjoyed this song, and while being a huge goob, Enrique Iglesias is actually a really good singer. I really wanna try this song out in karaoke. This is one of the few bilingual songs that I can think of that basically has the same video version for English and whatever other language it is in. Both versions of this video are basically the same, just with Enrique obviously mouthing different words in each one. I used to think Lassiter was gonna "change teams" for this guy. He just drips with awesomeness. Infinite bonus points for including Mickey Rourke in the video.

"Macarena"- Los Del Rio. This is the REAL Spanish version of the song. The "Bayside Boys" remix which became popular in the United States, was actually a triple remake of the original song by Seville, Spain's own Los Del Rio. The "Spanglish" version is a popular one at weddings and such (ok I know where this is going), but is NOT the original. More on this one later. Dude dancing has a gay-dar off the charts- what you think Devon?

"Oye Como Va"- Santana. As legendary in Mexico Carlos Santana is for his songwriting and guitar playing, "Oyes Como Va" is actually a cover of a 1963 Latin Jazz hit by Tito Puente. Santana's 1971 version was instrumental in reintroducing latin rock to the United States and is still his biggest spanish language hit in the United States. Great live performance here- man this song makes me want to dance! Has anyone ever seen Carlos Santana without a hat on?

"Loba"- Shakira. Spanish version of her worldwide hit "She Wolf" (the Spanish version actually came first- as is the case with the majority of Spanish language singers). There really isn't much I can add to this one- watch the video and you'll see why. Most people forget that Shakira is Colombian, and a beautiful Colombian she is!

"Vuelve"- Ricky Martin. The title track from Ricky Martin's worldwide smash album from 1998 which has sold over 8 million copies to date. Considering there is not a single English track on the album, that is pretty impressive. However, I do think the sales totals are a bit skewed because it boasts of very high American sales, which is probably true, but those numbers also include his native Puerto Rico. This song just sounds English- can't stop listening to it.

"Amor Prohibido"- Selena. The title track from Selena's final Spanish studio album (which is still the biggest selling Latin album of all time at 24 million copies sold! WOW!) in 1994 has always been a favorite video of mine. The "Mexican Madonna" as she was called, she shows just how great and beautiful she was with this song. Hard to believe that at the time this video was shot she was merely 23 years old. This song "forbidden love" is obviously about her relationship with eventual husband Chris Perez, who was a member of her band. Her father at first did not approve and threatened to fire him from the band, but eventually came around after urging from Selena. Great song- what a beautiful woman!

BONUS VIDEO- "Dreaming of You"- Selena. Before her murder in 1995, you would think that Selena would have been the next worldwide superstar after the release of these English tracks that included this song in released after her death in August 1995.
