Late Night Music Part 67........."Chips Off The Old Block"

You see it in sports and in music. When someone has a famous parent, they are almost unfairly compared to them for their entire career, and sometimes that person isn't as good as they should be or could be just due to the scrutiny placed upon them, some at an early age. However, in the world of music, there have been the second generation stars that have broken through, even if it was just for 15 minutes of fame to carry on their parents legacy, or sometimes start their own legend of music history. For the record, this list was very difficult, and I do apologize if I left anyone out.

In order to be considered for this category, the artist had to be the SON OR DAUGHTER of a previously famous ARTIST. This would disqualify Rockwell- while his father is Barry Gordy, his father isn't a famous artist, but rather a record executive. In a "Late Night Music" rarity, all artists who received votes in this category are featured on tonight's list.

"6th Avenue Heartache"- The Wallflowers. In 1996, Jakob Dylan, son of rock legend Bob Dylan became a household name with his band's album "Bringing Down the Horse". The lead single (and the first song Jakob ever wrote) "6th Avenue Heartache" became a Top 10 hit, but was overshadowed by their smash hit "One Headlight". I always favored this one more, and MAN that guy sounds like his daddy. Interesting facts about this song. Michael Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is playing the slide guitar and Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows is singing backing vocals. When I watch this video I can't help but tell how much Jakob was influenced by his father, but still keeping his own style. The Wallflowers are one of the best bands of the 90's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXDiGtgPL6E

"She's So High"- Tal Bachman. Most people didn't put 2 and 2 together when Tal Bachman came out with his debut album and this lead single from it in 1999. Most people had no idea he was the son of Randy Bachman, co-founder of Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive which became classic rock staples in the 1970's. Unlike Jakob Dylan and the Wallflowers, Tal Bachman departed from his dad's sound and rode this song to a "high" (no pun intended) #1 listing on the charts. I'm taking away bonus points for the poor cinematography in the video with the girl flying with the balloons- come on guys- try to fool someone! Oh wait, I'm gonna add bonus points for the fairy outfit on that brunette in the video- man she's hot!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ElORM9O-0U

"Too Late For Goodbyes"- Julian Lennon. I've always felt bad for Julian Lennon. Not only did he have to follow the footsteps of his larger than life famous dad after his death in 1980, it was public knowledge that his father favored his son Sean (his only child with Yoko Ono) over him. So when his debut album "Valotte" went platinum in 1984 and landed him Grammy nominations in 1985, you had to be impressed. Seriously, what a tough act to follow! Julian never found the big success again, but stays active in music including his great song from the 1996 "Mr. Holland's Opus" soundtrack "Cole's Song". I've always liked how Paul McCartney has defended Julian Lennon despite his negative perception in the press. One of the most little known facts ever is that "Jude" in the Beatles song "Hey Jude" is actually Julian Lennon. The song was originally called "Hey Jules" because Paul wanted to write a song for Julian to comfort him after the divorce of his parents in 1968. Julian also has said that he always remembered Paul being around more than John. With all that being said, I think the shirt Julian Lennon is wearing in this video is ridiculous- could he not find anything else?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmJ0AkzvdN8

"Miss You Like Crazy"- Natalie Cole. Natalie Cole has a wonderful voice, and is the daughter of one of the most amazing voices in the history of American music, Nat King Cole, not to mention his pioneer status of Black entertainers in America. Another tough act to follow. In 1987, she hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts with this song from her "Glad To Be Back" album. By this time, she was already a multiple Grammy nominee with a win in 1976 in the R & B category. Unlike many clean crackheads that have become before her, she seems to be a better artist post-crackhead rehab. Her new jazz sound is seriously unique!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axWWJMpqQHA

"Save Tonight"- Eagle-Eye Cherry. This one was interesting. First of all, Eagle-Eye Cherry wasn't included on Part 66 just due to the fact that while his mother is Swedish, his father is definitely African American Jazz Trumpeteer Don Cherry. Second, while this song is good, you never heard anything else from Eagle-Eye (yes that is his real name!). I kinda hate it because this video is actually quite entertaining- kinda reminds me of watching a Weird Al Yankovic video. Let me go on record by saying that Eagle-Eye Cherry is officially the ugliest artist ever featured on "Late Night Music".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nntd2fgMUYw

"Baby Don't Cry"- Lalah Hathaway. Every time I hear Lalah Hathaway's music I wish more and more we could have seen do something with her father Donny Hathaway (still, in my opinion, the most underrated soul singer ever). While she has a more jazz sound than her dad had, she still has an incredible voice. Tell me though, why in the world are the dancers dancing like that? I've never seen guys dance like that on a song that's supposed to be a slow jam. Then I see Lalah dance, and I see that while she may have inherited her dad's singing and songwriting talent, she didn't get a dancing gene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st64_kQVMlk

"In My Songs"- Gerald Levert. Gerald Levert was overshadowed by Luther Vandross for most of his career, but until his untimely death in 2006, he remained one of the most soulful singers in the R & B genre following in the footsteps of his father of O'Jay's fame, Eddie. This has always been my favorite Gerald Levert song even though it was released posthumously in 2007. The women in this video look so sad! What a video!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUavQ4VvHl0

"The Climb"- Miley Cyrus. Yeah, I went there. Hey, at least she doesn't have a mullet like her dad. Also, there is an outside chance that she'll be a cute 18 year old right? Ask me again on November 23 (her 18th birthday). I'd like to have seen a different artist do this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG2zyeVRcbs

"True To Myself"- Ziggy Marley. Ziggy Marley has a pretty successful reggae career despite being in constant comparison to his father, reggae icon Bob Marley. After several years with his band The Melody Makers, Ziggy released his first solo album in 2003 entitled "Dragonfly" which featured contributions from members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His song that made the biggest splash was the lead single "True To Myself". Bonus points for being able to keep his father's style alive with a great sound. Ziggy is pretty out there with some of his views, but man the guy is talented!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikzQmC3S-mE

"Escape"- Enrique Iglesias. Bonus points to me for not including "Hero" for a third time (which would set a record for any artist on "Late Night Music"), but using a different song by the son of the most famous spanish language singer in the history of music. Despite the high bar set by his old man, Enrique scored a huge worldwide hit with his second English language 2001 album "Escape" with this lead single of the same name. Besides being super cool, there are bonus points off the charts for this video featuring Anna Kournikova. If he wants to keep her waiting, I'll be glad to be on time for her!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mQJaXwGPlg

"Bang Bang"- Nancy Sinatra. Most people forget about Frank Sinatra's daughter having 2 Top 10 hits in her career. Since one really sucks and won't be mentioned here (ok, it's "These Boots Were Made For Walking"- MAN I HATE THAT SONG!). The other was 1967's "Bang Bang" which was actually a cover of one of Cher's early hits. It came back to prominence in in 2003 appearing on the soundtrack and in the opening credits to Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill Vol. 1".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Xl0Qry-hA

"Two Sisters"- Fiction Plane. Fiction Plane is actually a pretty big band in England, mainly due to the fact that lead singer Joe Sumner's father is the famous former frontman of the Police, Sting. This song is so hilarious- just listen to it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5c1QpHb_yU4

BONUS VIDEOS-

"Already Missing You"- Eddie and Gerald Levert. From their joint 1995 album "Father and Son".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9xDNmPn9SA

"Unforgettable"- Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole. This song won the 1992 Grammy for Record of the Year and was featured on Natalie's album of her cover versions of her father's hits "Unforgettable.......with Love", which also took home the Grammy for Album of the Year. Great performance here.

Late Night Music Part 66........"No Matter Where You Are In The World, If You're In The Bathroom I Still Think European"

I've always thought it was difficult for artists not from the UK, Australia, or Canada to make it big even for a minute in the United States not only because of the language barrier that so many of them face, but because of the record companies that might not have as big of an international presence. While some of these bands are hits the world over, they have to record in English (even if they couldn't speak it in a conversation) in order to be seen even for a second in the music promised land, the United States.

In order to be considered for this category, the artist/band had to be from a European country that is NOT in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, NORTHERN Ireland for all of you Geography remedials out there). Also receiving votes in this category was "Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco, "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco, and "99 Luftballons" by Nena.

"Zombie"- Cranberries. I know everyone is a big fan of their song "Linger", but I had to go with a song that was a little bit different from anything they did. For one song, The Cranberries thought they were a grundge band with this 1994 protest song over "The Troubles" between Ireland and the IRA of Northern Ireland. This song was written by lead singer Dolore O'Riordan after the violence spilled into England with a bombing in Warrington that killed 2 children. This video follows the usual dark tone of most alternative rock videos of the 1990's of being quite confusing, and in a way disturbing. However, I have seen this song done masterfully in karaoke by several females, and it continues to be one of my favorite rock songs from the 1990's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ejga4kJUts

"Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of"- U2. Staying in Ireland, U2 followed up their huge album "Pop" with 2000's 'All That You Can't Leave Behind" with this being the second single to follow up the hit "Beautiful Day". I had always been a casual U2 until my sophomore year of college when my roommate, who is quite possibly the biggest U2 fan ever played their music not only in excess, but all the time. I always appreciated him getting me in to some new bands. I have tried 3 times now to watch this video, but seeing Bono upside down makes me really dizzy, sorry can't do it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqFXZMdpMuk

"Take A Chance On Me"- ABBA. In 1977, Swedish supergroup ABBA was on top of the world, and in the midst of selling their 375 million albums worldwide. When their album simply called "The Album" hit the record stores in 1977, this lead single made it a hot commodity, with the single actually selling more copies than their biggest hit "Dancing Queen" in the United States, despite it only peaking at #3 in the USA. I'm gonna go on record by saying that Agnetha Faltskog (the blonde) was one of the better looking women in music in the late 1970's and has aged extremely well, and despite the negative stereotype of European women being hygiene challenged, she has definitely bucked that trend. Yes, I know she is 60 years old now, but come on what's wrong with paying a woman a compliment when it's deserved?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-crgQGdpZR0

"Lovefool"- The Cardigans. Wow, I keep going back to back with countries, but Swedish rock band the Cardigans "sold their soul" according to their loyal fan base in 1996 by going away from their rock sound with this hit song that appeared on the 1996 soundtrack of "Romeo and Juilet", and a couple of years later, "Cruel Intentions". Despite the backlash from their fans, the song shot to #1 and made their third studio album "First Band On The Moon" a huge success. Even though she looks completely psycho in this video, lead singer Nina Persson is also super hot! What is it about these Swedish women? Bonus points for the guy not paying attention to the lap dance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MuQ0AQ7YWS8

"Take On Me"- Ah-Ha. I'm glad I get to feature these guys from Norway again. However, I still think I'm watching an episode of "Speed Racer" on MTV, then I switch it to "Reading Rainbow" when the hand comes out of the book. Someone please explain to me where the bad guys came from and PLEASE tell me why Morten Harket wants to slam himself into the wall when he gets OUT of the book.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914

"Monsoon"- Tokio Hotel. Yes! I get to put our "gay" German friends on here again, didn't we confirm that, Devon? Let me also say that it's really confusing being a German band with a Japanese city in your name. Anyone else think so? This song was actually Tokio Hotel's first English single in 2007 on their first English album "Scream". This video is awesome- between flying in the helicopter and actually jumping out it seems like something off of "Fear Factor", but it gets ruined for me when I have to figure out why Bill Kaulitz has a typewriter in the limousine with him while no one is driving. Bonus points for this song being on Guitar Hero. This is my favorite song on this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Le_IyYLrUtQ

"Wind of Change"- Scorpions. Dangit! I did it again. The Scorpions were the first band from Germany to get big in the United States with "Rock You Like a Hurricane", and later this song that seems like a protest song if you watch the video, but Klaus Meine was writing about how happy he was about the changes in Eastern Europe of the late 80's and early 90's which included the fall of communism. After the band visited Russia in 1989, they were inspired to record this song. This song hit #4 in the United States. This song remains the best selling worldwide single by a band from Germany.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4RjJKxsamQ

"Dragostea Din Tei"- O-Zone. Ok, I never said the song had to be in English! Anyone who has seen the internet video is very familiar with this song (which was sampled by T.I. on his song "Live Your Life"). O-Zone made the country of Moldova proud with their hit record also known as the "Numa Numa Song" off of their 2004 album "DiscO-Zone" that was a European smash hit and actually cracked the Top 100 in the United States despite it being recorded in Romanian. Despite the song's major worldwide success, the band broke up a year later in 2005. I really like how these guys really wanna act like they are an American boy band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRx5PrAlUdY

"Out Of My Hands"- Milow. I know I've featured this song before, but it's too good to not put on here again. This song from Milow's latest self-titled album has propelled this singer/songwriter from Belgium to platinum record status all over Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. It's only a matter of time before Milow is just as big in the United States. Remember, you heard it here first.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTBKXiNA2dE

"All The Things She Said"- t.A.T.u. It's hard to believe that as big as Russia is, they've only produced one real worldwide musical group, and it was these two ladies, who just can't seem to keep their hands off of each other. I watch this video and it really makes me seriously just stop and stare for a second. Not only am I confused by the premise, but I am trying to figure out whethere or not these girls aren't lovers. I don't think t.A.T.u. ever came out and said they were LGBT, but I really wouldn't be surprised. With that being said, bonus points for the girls hugging in the rain.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mGBaXPlri8

"Nothing Compares 2 U"- Sinead O'Connor. Before you talk about how awesome Sinead O'Connor is, please remember that Prince wrote this song and that Sinead's only hit was this song (COVER SONG ALERT!). However, I will say that this is a good video just because Sinead was so convincing in her acting the part of the song. Now, if Sinead O'Connor would have put that much energy into actually advancing her career instead of embarassing the people of Ireland with her antics she might have actually have been taken seriously.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUiTQvT0W_0

"Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You"- Milli Vanilli. Admit it, you really wanted to see these guys be for real in the end. However, every time I see this or other videos of theirs, it just always seems like it's a different person from song to song. These guys should have been able to make great music videos since they were so used to lip synching.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZG-VvlErJY

"The Final Countdown"- Europe. I stand corrected, Europe was from Sweden, I have no idea why I thought they were from Norway. I hate that their biggest song wasn't their best, but you have to give these guys all kinds of bonus points for this one. Not only is the song played in NBA/NHL arenas all over the dang country, but FOUR, count 'em FOUR professional wrestlers have used this song as their entrance music, including The Great Muta.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jK-NcRmVcw

"Barbie Girl"- Aqua. Whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_dGcYH6Fwj8

"A Beautiful Life"- Ace of Base. As overplayed as these guys were in the mid 90's, you have to actually give them credit for being successful while being unfairly compared to ABBA despite their styles being nothing alike (but their female members were hotter- MORE HOT SWEDISH WOMEN!). While their songs that made 7th grade girls hateable in 1994-1995, I have to admit even I was impressed when this lead single off of their sophomore album "The Bridge" followed up their smash debut album "The Sign" to worldwide success with a super cool video to go along with it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyly3JtXoy4

"I Don't Like Mondays"- The Boomtown Rats. Bob Geldof in a way is Ireland's version of Bruce Springsteen. Despite only having 3 big hits to his band's credit, he always seems to be the guy sticking his nose in the political scene and is never shy for face time any time European artsists are having a "save the world" moment. Admirable, yes, but come on man it gets old. Unlike Springsteen though, he actually has a cool song in this song here performed at the London performance of Live Aid.

Late Night Music 9/11 Edition Part 65............."Child's Play"

I've always been fascinated by kid groups that hit it big in the music industry. I always wonder whether they'll have a great long career, or if they're just a prodigy that was pushed hard by their parents/manager and get burned out at an early age, or are they part of a trend that will quickly fade out despite the act's talent? No matter their story, kid acts continue to sweep the nation selling out concerts, winning awards, and stealing teenage girls hearts with every note they sing. Whether we wanted to be one, or whether we just like laughing at them, this list takes a look at some of the best (and worst) child acts in music history.

In order to be eligible for this category the artist at the time of the RECORDING had to be under 18 years old, not the video. Also, the entire group had to be under 18 years old. This would disqualify N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, The Jackson Five, and most family groups. Also receiving votes in this category were "Good Morning Little Schoogirl" by Jonny Lang, "She's My Girl" by Billy Gilman, "Come Clean" by Hillary Duff, and "Party In The USA" by Miley Cyrus (just because it gets played ALL THE TIME IN APPLEEBEES!!!!). Lil' Bow Wow will not appear anywhere on this list, give it up guys- he sucks.

"Baby"- Justin Bieber feat. Ludacris. I am very aware of the fact that Justin Bieber has now cracked "Late Night Music" twice in the last 4 entries- WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO! Like always, part of me wants to think JB is cool. Seriously, what 16 year old guy wouldn't wanna be like him? I can't believe these words are coming out of my mouth, but this kid REALLY reminds me of a goofy white Usher. Just watch the video and really listen to his style of singing. Call me crazy, but I think I'm right on this one. Bonus points for Luda.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kffacxfA7G4

"Before You Walk Out Of My Life"- Monica. I have to admit that when 1995's "Miss Thang" and its first single "Don't Take It Personal" came out, I was NOT impressed at all. I thought it was another attempt to bring a new kid soul singer on to the scene after the r & b kid boy bands fizzed out in the early 90's. However, when her second song and video came out, I started to come around. Monica was 15 years old at the time of this video being filmed. I don't know many girls that age that carry themselves like this. She was already dripping with talent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1yB1V81uEU

"The Crazy Things I Do For Love" - Sammie. As embarassing as it sounds, Jay Money and I listened to this CD "From The Bottom To The Top" all the way to and from Brazil in 2000. For some reason we thought it was cool to listen to a 13 year old kid who had more swag than either one of us will ever have. I can't get over how cool this song is. Sammie has recently resurfaced and recently collaborated with Trey Songz for an extended play called "Coming of Age" to proceed the release of his new album coming out this year. Should be interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRgjMYKCVWs

"Uptight (Everything's Alright)"- Stevie Wonder. Long before "Superstitious", "I Just Called To Say I Love You", "Golden Lady", and "Ribbon In The Sky", Stevie Wonder was a child star sensation with Motown in 1963 and struck big time with this 1965 hit at the tender young age of 15. Stevie Wonder always looks like he's having a great time on stage. This was also the first song co-written by Stevie Wonder. It was said that in the 60's Stevie Wonder caused so much for Barry Gordy (teachers, parents, doctors) that he almost didn't want to sign the Jackson 5 just because he feared the same issues.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14hskyBXkPo

"Where's The Love?"- Hanson. Ok, don't laugh. I take alot of crap for it, but I've always defended Hanson. Yes, I know their haircuts look ridiculous and they look stupid when they sing, but these guys are NOT a bad band. At the time of this video, they were 12, 15, and 17. They also sang all the vocals, played most of the instruments, and wrote most of the music/lyrics. So tell me how that makes them a bad band? Maybe their image was goofy, but you can't deny these guys talent. The album "Middle of Nowhere" was actually pretty decent despite the bubble gum image of the band. After their voices changed, and they matured a little bit, Hanson continues to record and has some really good material. Their 2004 album "Underneath" is, to me, one of the best albums of 2004.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK5obmgq6u0&ob

"Call Me A Mack"- Usher. In 1993, John Singleton was making another one of train wreck story of the ghetto movies, "Poetic Justice" which featured larger than life icons Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur and still managed to be a terrible movie, as most Singleton movies wind up being. However, the movie drew attention because of the smash hit "Again" by Janet Jackson which was nominated for tons of Grammys in 1994. However, stuck on the soundtrack was a 15 year oldkid that no one had heard of from Chattanooga, Tennessee. That singer was the soon to be very famous Usher, who was known then by his whole name Usher Raymond. "Call Me A Mack" wound up being a minor hit on his debut album "Usher", but most people got into him 3 years later when "My Way" hit the airwaves. This video really cracks me up. All these beautiful 20 something year old women going crazy over this kid who can't even drive. Oh to be an entertainer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gp_trV1gbk

"Ready"- N Toon. This is my favorite, not because of the song being good (decent song), the group (extrememly stereotypical and goofy), or the video (completely ridiculous), but the fact that I actually saw these kids sing live one time in a performance I will never forget. In 2000, Jackson had an independent league baseball team the DiamondKats which had a black general manager who told the Clarioin-Ledger his goal was to "get more African-Americans to the baseball stadium". Well, in a blatant effort, he booked Sammie in a pregame concert with the opening act of N Toon. Me and Jay Money actually showed up for the game that night right after the concert ended and we were surrounded by scantily clad 11-15 year old girls who were dying to be seen by these boy bands. Anyway, before the game started, it was announced that N Toon would be singing the national anthem. Actually, it was pretty hard to hear over all the screams. As I had my hand over my heart in reverence to the song, I quickly began laughing because what happened was the worst national anthem rendition I ever heard.........hands down, not even close, no doubt, no questions asked. It was worse than Carl Lewis. I don't remember who won that game that night, but I remember wondering how those kids had a recording contract. It was no surprise to me when these kids faded off into obscurity.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LW3g3dilM-A

"Iesha"- Another Bad Creation. Ok, while I'm on my soap box of dogging the 90's r & b kid groups, I have to remind everyone that "Coolin' At The Playground Ya Know" by Another Bad Creation was the first CD I ever bought in 1990. Fact about this song- Boyz II Men is singing background vocals. I also wonder when I see these kids if the NBA, NFL, MLB, and NCAA ever paid these kids for advertising all their teams. I've never seen so much team gear in my life. Bonus points for the grandmother at the beginning of the video. I have to ask though- doesn't Dallas Austin look not excited to be in this video? It's almost like that kid is an annoying little boy that won't leave him alone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDPIK7Fz_g4&ob

"Picture To Burn"- Taylor Swift. Here is another artist I am quick to defend. One of the things that really upset me after her Grammy domination recently were the facebook posts I saw by many r & b/hip-hop fans who said that "oh yeah, the over privileged white kid wins again" and "of course the white girls wins". I'm sorry, but Taylor Swift may not the best singer in the world or the best guitar player, but her songs are freaking good. She was 16 at the time of her first album release and was 17 by the time this video came out. This is also one of my favorite songs to play on "Band Hero" when my little sister sings. She can rock this song, but not as good as Taylor Swift.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCMqcFAigRg&ob

"How Do I Live"- LeAnn Rimes. I have to admit, I got sick of the hype around LeAnn Rimes when "Blue" came out and Y101 screaming that she was the "GIRL FROM PEARL!" every time she came on the radio. She was 14, not very attractive and had one album. Yeah she was from Mississippi, but I was already sick of her. However, when this song came out in 1997, this 15 year old stole my heart. If I was a woman, I would always sing this song karaoke, and it's still one of my favorite songs to sing background vocals to while LeAnn sings it. I really like the Trisha Yearwood version of this song too, but something about this one-man!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90e8ryPDKWo

"Complicated"- Avril Lavigne. This Canadian sensation who was just 17 jumped into the mainstream with this debut single and worldwide hit. I have to admit that I never really listened to the words until just now. I think it's cool that a 16 year old (at the time of writing) could write something this deep. I've never been a huge Avril Lavigne fan, but I'll always really like this song. Bonus points for acting crazy in the mall in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NPBIwQyPWE&ob

"I Can't Wait Another Minute"- Hi Five. Hi Five would have been HUGE, but it was a little group called Boyz II Men that was around at the same time that kind of squashed their hopes. Nevertheless, these kids from Waco, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma shot to the top of the r & b charts with this song with the late Tony Thompson singing the lead vocals. I've featured this one on here a few times, but this is still one of my favorite slow jams from the 90's, and is without a doubt my favorite skating rink song ever. What would have happened if Tony Thompson had dropped that camcorder?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1xRW1CYpik

"Summer Vacation"- The Party. Ok, here is a group I really liked, but I won't try to defend them. The Party was 5 former members of the new Mickey Mouse Club "MMC" that "outgrew" the show at 15 and broke off to form this group. I actually was really excited to buy their debut album and actually wrote them a fan letter when I was 10 years old. I can't believe I actually liked this song. DeDe Mangroo was so sexy though!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO8qGcYDQBo

"Understanding"- Xscape. Wow, I am finding alot of ways to put my favorite r & b girl group on here. In 1992, Xscape released their debut album "Hummin' Coming At Cha" with no member of the group older than 16 years old at the time. The album went on to be nominated for 3 Grammys and featured this smash hit which first introduced the world to Xscape- even if their era was rather short. Tameka Cottle (the future Mrs. T.I.) has said that this song was so "universal" in appeal that they were destined for success. I would be curious what she has to say now, but oh yeah, she's in jail.

"Why Do Fools Fall In Love?"- Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Here is a clip of the original kid group, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers performing their one and only hit, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?". Lead singer Frankie Lymon was only 14 at the time of this performance. While they were brief, the Teenagers were groundbreaking in the fact that because they were half black and half latino, they were one of the first integrated groups in American popular music, particularly in the doo wop genre, as most integrated groups were in the jazz genre.

"Jealous Girl"- New Edition. Very obscure song by New Edition off of their debut album "Candy Girl" in 1983, but later covered by Another Bad Creation 7 years later. This makes sense since Michael Bivens was the producer of their album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZmdmsjDpaM

"Ben"- Michael Jackson. Great performance from MJ here with one of his first solo hits (and he was only 14 and already a household name!). I really like this song, but every time I think about the story behind this song I have to laugh. In 1972, the song was originally offered to Donny Osmond, but he turned it down, because it was the title song for the movie of the same name which was about a boy and his PET RAT, which was the leader of a pack of killer rats that killed everyone in the town, but Ben remained loyal to his child friend. Excuse me while I ask what in the hell they were thinking about on this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U36DO_nrJeA

"My Baby"- Lil' Romeo. Lil' Romeo rode his daddy's (Master P) coattails to release one of Cash Money's first non-explicit singles with this song about all the little girls that follow Lil' Romeo around. He actually performed this song at the 2002 Michael Jackson special. Yeah, I know I was thinking the same thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuuUXnhfQGI

"Jump, Jump"- Kriss Kross. Whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvSUJjVYKFU

"I Think She Likes Me"- The Moffatts. I'm not joking on this one. These four brothers from British Columbia actually made headlines with this song in 1995. Just watch.....and try not to laugh.

BONUS VIDEOS- Sometimes these kids go on to have great careers!

"U Should've Known Better"- Monica. In 2002, Monica had grown up a little bit and released this song, still my favorite song by her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daPJTxuY7G8

"Love In This Club"- Usher feat. Young Jeezy. I wish I could be this cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB5e0zHRzHc

"Underneath"- Hanson. A great video of Hanson's recent material. One of my favorite songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og8How4IYZ8

"Maybe Tomorrow"- Jackson Five. Still my favorite J5 song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFQ-cqsNo-8

"Still In Love With You"- New Edition. Just because Devon looks like a grown up Ralph Tresvant.

Late Night Music Part 64........"Psssst!"

"Friends don't make secrets and secrets don't make friends" we'd here from parents and teachers growing up. You'd have to admit, you were pretty left out if you didn't know that "secret" when you were little, but it felt cool to know it. On the contrary, in music we here about "secrets", but unlike when we were younger, sometimes it's almost cooler to not know what the secret is. One of the greatest "secrets" in music- what in the world Meatloaf is talking about when he says he "won't do "THAT"". What is "that"? See what I mean? However, his 1993 opus won't be joining us tonight, as it is ineligible for this list. I feel like I'm rambling now- on to the list.

In order to be eligible for this category, obviously the song had to have the word "secret" in the SONG TITLE. Also receiving votes in this category were "My Secret Place" by Joni Mitchell, "The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret" by Queens of the Stone Age, "Secret Crowds" by Angels and Airwaves, and "Secret Lover" by The Isley Brothers. NOT receiving votes was "Secret Garden" by Bruce Springsteen- we all know that I think he sucks.

"Secret"- Madonna. In 1994, Madonna rounded out her "whore" phase with the release of "Bedtime Stories" and this song as it's lead single. I always thought that this was when Madonna really began her awesome music, not to say she wasn't good before. I really heard alot of her in England during our 1995 trip over spring break, as this album was larger than life at the time. Also, maybe it's just me, but if you watch this video and then watch the follow up single's video for "Take A Bow" they seem eerily similar. Great soul feel to this song- one of my Madonna favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPzbbvQAzmQ%EF%BB%BF

"Dirty Little Secret"- All-American Rejects. The pride of Stillwater, Oklahoma came out with their awesome 2005 album "Move Along' and led off the album with this single in 2006. I've always been a Rejects fan, but I really wish Tyson Ritter would stop screaming at me. The guy just seems super upset! Then he looks in the camera like he's mad at me. Bonus points for the signs the people in the video hold up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPDcwjJ8pLg&ob=av2e

"Secrets"- David Jennings. For the second time ever, an artist will appear in "Late Night Music" while they are being tagged as a reader. This one just has the distinction of knowing me since I was 12. This song is featured on Dave's album "Sticks and Stones" and always been my favorite song of his, and he may not know this, but it meant alot to me when I first got to Tennessee. I'm glad Dave cleaned up his place for this video, but why the sunglasses inside? I know you're future's bright bud, but when you finally take them off your eyes are blacked out! Bonus points for the shots of you playing two instruments in the same song. To check out more of Dave Jennings check out his website at http://iwannago.net/davidjennings/The_Official_Website_of_David_Jennings.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDLoi4yzntY

"Secrets"- One Republic. One Republic has always kind of puzzled me. They have even called themselves "genreless" and I have to agree, because I have no way to really describe their sound, not that I would call it "extraordinary" or "special", it's just....ya know, there. I have to admit I grew tired of their first album "Dreaming Out Loud", but their follow up "Waking Up" just seems more real with this song being a perfect example. Also notice that they are another band in the ranks of Yellowcard and Dashboard Confessionals that feature a violinist. I have to admit I was lost by the video but it is actually scenes from the German movie "Zweiohrküken" to which this song appears on the soundtrack. Good, because I was completely lost on that one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHm9MG9xw1o&ob=av2e

"Secret Valentine"- We The Kings. I recently have become into this band from Bradenton, Florida simply due to their similarity to bands like Sherwood, Relient K, Mae, and other power pop bands that are out there. I like the way they sound, but Travis Clark might need to buy a mirror. He looks way too much like a cross between carrot top and fellow Florida band The Almost's lead singer Aaron Gillespie. Bonus points for the hot chicks in the video, but get some who can act next time guys.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQQ0lpYI1RI

"Little Secrets"- Passion Pit. Passion Pit has always been one of those bands that make you say "holy crap". Because similar to bands like Tokio Hotel, they have a male lead singer (Michael Angelakos) who sounds like a woman. I love this song's combination of electric keyboards (very similar to Keane in a way) and conventional drums and guitar. I think the music industry is about to put out alot more bands like Passion Pit (see Owl City, Crystal Castles, or even Keane). Super bonus points for the exploding paper bags in the video! It almost reminds of the Saints fans of years past to today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScC_pi3PJ9k

"Secret Smile"- Semisonic. in 1998, Semisonic was riding high on the success of their album "Feeling Strangely Fine" with their #1 single "Closing Time". Semisonic actually had a pretty sizeable following throughout their home state of Minnesota as well as around the country. Yes, I know what you're thinking- you look at Dan Wilson in the video and you're like- "how?". He would definitely win a goober award, but this song, along with the rest of this album proved to be one of the best of 1998/1999. I'm taking away points, however for the fake footage of the helicopter at the end as he runs away from the reporters, c'mon man! Pretty funny and creative video though- something the band was always known for.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-yQdNjC3AY

"Secret Lovers"- Atlantic Starr. Sometimes in the 1980's, there were those R & B bands that just seemed so goofy and cheesy you wondered why they were even in the genre (see DeBarge, The Jets, Klymaxx, or even James Ingram). Atlantic Starr was no exception. While they had the smooth band and the nice voices of David Lewis and Barbara Weathers, but they look beyond ridiculous in this video. Also, I can't figure out if Weathers planned that intro to this song or if she just forgot what she was doing for a second. At the time, this song was a top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and that's the best she can do? Bonus points for the guitar player who looks like a member of the village people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe2UXqFo0DY&ob=av2n

"My Little Secret"- Xscape.YES! I love any excuse to show and talk about the very sexy Kandi Burruss despite the fact that she whored herself out for TV when she joined the cast of "The Real Housewives of Atlanta". Prior to her bad career move, she was hands down one of the hottest women in R & B, and she steals the show on this song. I've always said that Xscape's 1998 album "Traces of My Lipstick" was one of the most underrated albums in 1990's R & B despite being produced by Keith Sweat, and in alot of ways, ushered the beginning end of the 1990's soul to the sound we have today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDHggk9NlN8&ob=av2e

"Secret Messages"- Electric Light Orchestra. I love the cool sounds at the beginning of ELO songs. I almost feel like I'm about to watch an episode of "Jericho" when I see this video. ELO always got away with being weird because they didn't look as weird as the other weird British bands of the 70's and 80's. Jeff Lynne and this band are just so cool! I also think ELO does as good a job as any rock band of the era in using vocal harmony in different arrangements in songs. However, like most ELO videos, I'm not sure what point he is trying to make. Are the "secrt messages" the languages that these ladies speak that we obviously don't know? Or are they in the stars in some weird constellation? Bonus points for Saturn in the background.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDAcbxz0fuQ&ob=av3e

"Secret"- Heart. Why does Heart rock so hard but still make you feel like you are watching a Debbie Gibson video? Heart had to be one of the best arena rock era bands (as the video shows), but they just don't fit the bill as far as looks. I think this one of Heart's better songs although it never did well on the charts- I really love Ann Wilson's voice. This song just had the unfortunate luck of being a power ballad in 1991 off of their album "Brigade". Were power ballads even allowed at that point? Bonus points for Ann Wilson flying over Japan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCYpntqmbqY

"My Secret (Didja Gitit Yet?)"- New Edition. This one has me confused because it's actually a really good song. But with the hype around their self titled smash album still sailing in 1985, they released this single while "Lost In Love" was still in the Top 10. I really don't see why you release this single at that time and then go out of your way to make this video. This video was groundbreaking in the fact that not only was the first video to ever feature live footage from the NBA (with Byron Scott, Pat Riley and Magic Johnson), but the song was also featured in the 1985 "smash" movie "Krush Groove" (which if you remember, was talked about in the movie "Dogma" between Bartleby and Loki about which movie would be bigger- "Krush Groove or E.T."). I still don't know what the secret is though- it sure wasn't that Ralph Tresvant should be in the NBA.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by__VZRA9Wc

BONUS VIDEOS- "Hotel Room Heartbeat"- David Jennings- another great live recording by Dave Jennings.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liPlDTI-ZeY

"Always" - Atlantic Starr. All of that cheeziness paid off in 1987 when they had this #1 worldwide smash hit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTF97_ve118

it's no secret, I love Kandi Burruss!
David Jennings at 12th and Porter- one of the best venues in Nashville
Tyler Ritt of All American Rejects- the most angry man in music

Late Night Music Part 63........."Up, Up, and Away!"

Last night we went down, so it was only natural tonight that we had to go up. Nothing fancy here folks, just didn't wanna show favoritism.

To be in this category the SONG TITLE had to have the word "UP" in it. Also recieving votes in this category were "When A Woman's Fed Up" by R. Kelly (no pedophiles allowed on the list), "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes (they already had their appearance- one hit wonders don't get two entries), "Crank It Up" by Ashley Tisdale, "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban,

"Looking Up"- Paramore. I have to be honest, I just wanted to figure out a way to make a list that featured Paramore. I am gonna do ahead an make it official- they have taken over Third Eye Blind as my favorite current band. Something about Hayley Williams singing and their songs just is so ridiculously awesome, and the fact that she is from Meridian makes it even cooler. Just the way this live performance starts building up energy and then Williams coming on stage is just so awesome! How is she not dizzy? Is she getting hyped up or throwing a temper tantrum? Paramore is slowly catching Hootie and the Blowfish and Earth, Wind, and Fire as "band I would most like to see live that I haven't already seen". I think Paramore also shows everyone that you don't have to be a country band to come out of Nashville. I think one of the biggest misunderstanding about the Nashville music scene is that it is all country. Yes, it is the country music capital of the world, but it's called "music city" for a reason. This song is featured on their latest album "Brand New Eyes". What a great song to open a set with!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWRLqh0-DeM

"Giving Up The Gun"- Vampire Weekend. Ok, let me say that this song is off of Vampire Weekend's latest album "Contra". They admit that it is named after the famous video game. Dorks? I'll let you decide when you watch the video. I remember when I saw them for the first time on Jay Leno a few years back and I have always been really impressed despite their obvious dorky persona (but I think it is part of their act). Bonus points for Jake Gyllenhaal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bccKotFwzoY

"Burnin' Up"- Jonas Brothers. Wow, two straight entries where I have broken an "unwritten rule". Yes, these guys are cheesy. Yes, this video is totally stupid. Yes, the majority of their fans are under 14 years old. However, I think the Jonas Brothers have the unfortunate luck of just being young and related, as being brothers and under 21 is gonna make you dorks when you try to have a band (see Hanson- they are at least KINDA cool now right?). I hate the fact they actually utter the line "I can't grow a moustache" at the end- I feel like so dirty. I'm tired of trying to reach for reasons to make these guys seem cool- maybe there aren't any. Oh well, enjoy the video. Oh wait! That's it! Just watch, you'll find yourself getting their songs stuck in your head- that makes them cool, right? Oh, thought I'd try.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScXLHgPcZuc

"Caught Up"- Usher. I've always been a so/so Usher fan. I think he has some good songs, but he's one of the guys out there, that you ladies have heard me say "makes me sick". It's seriously not fair for a guy to be able to dance and move that perfect, look that cool, and have the perfect cheek bones and facial features- where did I go wrong? This isn't Usher's best song, but dang that guy can dance! Perfect example of how cool Usher is- the guy was dating freaking Chili from TLC and dumped her! Name a single guy you know that would blow being with a woman like that! Oh, by the way, I don't know the actor's name, but the "bad guy" in the video is Detective James Carter's cousin who owns the pool hall in the first "Rush Hour".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TKaXirF_2A

"Wake Me Up When September Ends"- Green Day. I had no idea this video was so stupid. I hate when bad videos ruin good songs (see Phil Collins video from the last entry "I've Fallen, and I Can't Get Up!"). Green Day is a strange band. They sing songs about being a "basket case" and then sing songs like this. I'm gonna take points off for Billie Joe Armstrong's make up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjNJmwwf7QA

"Caught Up In You"- .38 Special. This is a cool song by a cool band, but this video's unintentional comedic value is seriously off the charts. I feel like I'm watching a cross between a stupid 1980's beer video and a Devo video. My question is why in the world do they have the two sweaty guys arm wrestling in a bar? I've never seen that- is that realistic? Note to white people out there- please stop dancing like this. Also, how much do you think Budweiser paid the band for product placement in this video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg21Rkew874

"Up All Night"- Classified. I was torn on this one. Classified is the stage name of Luke Boyd, a white Canadian rapper from Nova Scotia. Does anyone else think they are listening to Eminem ripoff when they hear this song? Yeah, I thought so too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja5RUc2e568

"Start Me Up"- Rolling Stones. One of my favorite sports songs ever! I loved this song in my days as an intramural director on championship nights! In 1981, the Stones were facing rumours of band turmoil and imminent break up (much like another pretty popular British band), due to their seemingly declining popularity. However, their album "Tattoo You" took 1981 by storm with this song leading the way- kind of appropriate ya think? Yes, I think the Stones are awesome, and I love Mick Jagger, but the guy isn't the best at pronouncing his words. I kid you not- until I was probably 17 years old I thought this song was called "mafia".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ed36UQX8kXQ

"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go"- Wham!. In 1999, George Michael came out of the closet as a homosexual. For those of us who had half a brain, we figured it out by simply watching this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIgZ7gMze7A&ob=av3e

"Dress You Up In My Love"- Madonna. I am shocked at the Michael Jackson-esque freaking out by her FEMALE fans. Why did little girls wanna be like her? Was I asleep or do I simply not remember Madonna being that much larger than life? Wow- I knew that by 1985 (which is about the time of this performance) she was a big enough whore to be in a movie like "Desperately Seeking Susan" with Rosanna Arquette, but seeing this video is almost scary. I always laugh at the irony of her 1984 smash album "Like A Virgin" and that songs like this were included on it. I have to admit that I've been a huge fan of Madonna's later work ever since "Bedtime Stories" and "Ray of Light", but this here makes me feel dirty- let me go wash my hands and then I'll keep typing.....hold on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6I5hb9p7Y0

"Party Up (Up In Here)"- DMX. DMX USED to be a cool rapper. He lost his street cred and his status as a rapper on this song. Did he really expect us to be scared of him after this? He released two banging albums in 1998 (I always thought he released them too quick- maybe he should have saved some of his stuff for later) "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot" and "Flesh of My Flesh, and Blood of My Blood", only to be followed by "And Then There Was X" which featured crap like this. He's gone on to make bad "action movies" after the decent "Belly" in 1999 and get arrested a few times- still not getting his street cred back from me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R96CTtFtyr0

"Light Up The World"- Desperation Band. Some people say videos and songs like this get old, but this one really got me. Desperation Band is a Christian band from Colorado and this song and video are very powerful. Some of you saw my status I had about life the other day- this one pretty much sums it up. The numbers are the beginning of this video are powerful and staggering. I've always said that you don't have to "give birth" (even though so many of you women understandably crave it) to be a parent. There are children out there who are craving to have parents. Man, what a moving song!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhB5lcNZfvQ

"Stir It Up"- Bob Marley and The Wailers. No, he isn't saying "steer". Most people forget that this song was recorded and made famous by Johnny Nash in 1972 even though Bob Marley wrote the song in 1967, only to be re-recorded later by Marley to have his first hit in the United States. So, is it a cover song? That one is up for debate. I've always been a big Marley fan, but what in the world does he keep looking at? He looks like he's trying to keep an eye on a kid or something. He almost doesn't look lke he's even focused on the song. Bonus points for his band's outfits.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd2GZqQOuRw

"Light Up The Sky"- Yellowcard. Another band I always love to have an excuse to put on here. I know I talk about it all the time, and yes, these guys rock. However, I can't get used to seeing the violin guy going to town while the rest of the band rocks out on the drums and guitars. I know it sounds good, it's just weird looking is all. This song, featured on "Paper Walls" is probably the best song on the album. I still favor their debut album "Ocean Avenue" and second album "Lights and Sounds" immensely over it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pe0FS6Am488&ob=av2e

"Pick-"up" Man"- Joe Diffie. Just for you country fans- now shut up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGs-T5FNAyc

BONUS VIDEOS- "Hallelujah"- Paramore. Absolutely love this song by Paramore.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TYlOXVdVcQ&ob=av2e

"Year 3000"- Jonas Brothers. Stuck in my head after it started playing in rotation at Applebee's. DANG IT!

I did it again!
George, seriously, we ALWAYS knew

Late Night Music Part 62................"I've Fallen, And I Can't Get Up"

Before I even start, let me say that this has been my favorite list to listen to that I've ever had. Something about this one just hit the spot. The funny thing is that it's one of the most diverse as well- go figure.

When we think about the word "down", we usually think falling, in a bad mood, just a negative direction period. Musicians have used it for a variety of reasons in both positive and negative ways. For some reason on the way to work today listening the song "Hands Tied" by Toni Braxton I thought of the idea of "down" for some odd reason. Also, I thought this would be a really hard category to fill out, but you would be shocked at how often the word is used, especially in song titles. I can't figure out how my mind works. I also, for some reason, decided it had to be written tonight, despite the fact that I really wanted to lay DOWN.

To be considered in this category there had to be the word "DOWN" in the SONG TITLE (so the bands Three Doors Down and System of a Down could be considered, but had to have a song title with the word). Also receiving votes in this category were "Write This Down" by George Strait, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" by the Zac Brown Band, and "Come Down" by Bush.

"Down"- Jay Sean ft. Lil Wayne. Jay Sean is a rare guy. Not only is he of Indian origin (how rare is that in the hip hop community?!), he's also a British Indian solo artist. You almost have to think this guy was told by alot of people that he would never make it in the hip hop scene. This song from 2009 was not only the 4th song to by a British act to top the Billboard Hot 100 this decade, it was the first song EVER by a British Asian artist to top the chart in the United States. This is one of those songs that you can't help but like. Not only does it make you wanna dance, Jay Sean is a really good singer, and in the video, he dances with more swagger than most American hip hop artists. I have to admit, he does look a little silly next to Lil' Wayne. Bonus points for Birdman making a cameo in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUbpGmR1-QM

"Down To Earth"- Justin Bieber. I know I told myself several times that I would never stoop to this level, but I can't help it, I really like this song. I have to give the guy props, he may be a little young and goofy, but the guy has the talent to be a serious R & B singer once he matures a little bit. I just hope he doesn't get "bubblegummed" to death for his own good. Eventhough this song wasn't released as a single on his debut smash album "My World", our Canadian underaged friend sounds almost like he has some soul on this song. I can't help it, I'm hooked.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOAU_1hWslM

"Down On The Corner"- Creedence Clearwater Revival. I always loved how Creedence Clearwater Revival wrote songs about and in the style of the south (including the Mississippi Delta), but yet were all form Los Angeles. On their 1969 album "Willy and The Poor Boys", the "title track" (since the song is about them) "Down On The Corner" talked the struggles and performances of a street corner band and has the style and feel of that band. Pretty good live performance here from 1969. Thankfully, John Fogerty would later get a haircut.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJAjOlp4Tas

"Down With The Sickness"- Disturbed. Something about this song just gets me so hyped up. I'll probably have trouble going to sleep now just because I've listened to this song at least 3 times. In my officiating days, I would get hyped up hearing this song in high school gyms just because it's such a great sports song. Bonus points for that. I must say, I had trouble watching this video because David Dramain's piercings on his mouth not only look extremely painful, I am having a hard time seeing how he can still sing with that in his mouth- OUCH! Funny side note- Dramain asks us to "get down with the sickness" but also says "this is the gift that has been given to me". Is he being sarcastic?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09LTT0xwdfw&ob=av2e

"I Wish It Would Rain Down"- Phil Collins. Changing gears just a TAD BIT, Here is one I have always loved but just forgot about! In 1989, Phil Collins was super hot with the release of his album "...But Seriously" and drastically changed his style, including this super ballad. This video (fast forward to 2:30 or so to see the song) was a good idea, but wound up pretty dumb. Great addition in the video and the song of Eric Clapton, but the addition of "Arrested Development" star Jeffrey Tambor is kinda silly. This song and this album was a huge turning point for Phil Collins as his softer sound really started to come out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcY3FH208l8

"Knock You Down"- Keri Hilson ft. Kanye West and Ne-Yo. You know this song had to be good with my much known dislike for Kanye West. He almost kills the song, but it's saved by the very sexy and talented Hilson, and Ne-Yo hung around too, but we all know how I feel about him too. This song is very similar to "Down" earlier on the list, just because it makes me wanna dance (but thank God I don't), and on top of that, Keri Hilson has a really good melody on top of jamming beat. I have to add though I HATE Kanye as the "guy" in this video- there's no way someone who is that big of a douche should get a woman that sexy. I'm really looking forward to Keri Hilson's second album follow up to her debut "In A Perfect World".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_RqWocthcc

"Follow You Down"- Gin Blossoms. I'm glad I finally get to get this band on here, as they were always one of my favorite "One Album Wonder" bands right up there with Fastball. Even though this song came on there 1996 album "Congratulations I'm Sorry", it never came close to the success of their 1992 megahit album "New Miserable Experience", and this song proved to be their swan song from the public eye, despite them still being "together". Bonus points for the unlimited amount of staircases in the video that seem to be leading "down".

"Shake You Down"- Gregory Abbott. Ok, this song made me laugh the hardest of all the ones on here just because it's so dang cheesy, and to top if off, Gregory Abbott is even more cheesy- seriously, just look at the guy! He also had the unfortunate "luck" of going #1 on this, his debut single, only to find the top 10 one more time. Maybe it was his ridiculous hair, or the fact that this HAS to be the only #1 song in music history in any country that actually has the word "telepathy" in it. I also would like to give Mr. Abbott a lesson in how to say "Well Well" without it sounding like "O Way O Way". I also had to really look hard to see that he really wasn't Philip Michael Thomas (Detective Ricardo Tubbs) from "Miami Vice".

"I Won't Back Down"- Tom Petty. BONUS POINTS FOR THE BEATLES! Ringo Starr on the drums and George Harrison on guitar! Oh Man! I almost wanna call this a Beatles song! In 1989, The Heartbreakers were on a break while Tom Petty joined The Traveling Wilburys with Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne (also on the song and video along with Heartbreaker Mike Campbell). After the death of Roy Orbison in 1988, the Traveling Wilburys disbanded and Tom Petty soon followed with his first solo album, "Full Moon Fever" in 1989, which let him record with a new band (shown in the video). Man my head is about to explode, how many guys got to make a SOLO album with two of the BEATLES in your freaking BACKING BAND?! Hasn't been done before, and won't happen again. I love this song, as Petty has called it his "most inspirational song".

"Shut It Down"- Pitbull ft. Akon. Another weird guy in hip-hop, Pitbull is Cuban, and he's not a very good rapper. Akon makes this song- only song on this list I really don't like. Would like to see Akon make a remix of this song without Pitbull.

"I'm Goin' Down"- Mary J. Blige. Mary has done some fantastic covers in her day ("Our Love", "Natural Woman", "One", "Stairway To Heaven", "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word"), but none are as awesome as this one, and the funny thing is, of all the covers she's done, this was probably the least popular before she covered it. Originally by Rose Royce in 1977, Mary included this song on her 1994 sophomore album "My Life". This video drew criticism from many critics just due to the fact that everything in the video (including the couples depicted) are in black and white. Cool shot of Mary "going down" the stairs. As I've said before, this was Mary's dumbest look (maybe it was the crack), but man she could BRING IT in those days (not to say she still can't!), today her songs aren't as dang sad.

"Upside Down"- Jack Johnson. I have to admit that ONE person got me into Jack Johnson and that's Becky Baldwin who played his album "In Between Dreams" to exhaustion during my days at LSU. So, I thought it was kinda cool to see him write and perform most of the soundtrack for the 2006 children's film "Curious George". This song and video just drip with coolness and I love how the song can almost be pictured as Curious George singing- think about it- monkey, upside down- with me?

"Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"- Elton John. From the "Red Piano" show in Las Vegas. Wow- no words for this one.

BONUS VIDEO- "Breakdown"- Jack Johnson. One of my favorite songs ever written, and I haven't had on here on a while. Thought I'd include it on here. It was, however disqualified because "Breakdown" is one word. Sorry, Jack.

Late Night Music Part 61............"My Name, Is Neo

One thing I have always noticed as I discuss music with people of all races, ages, backgrounds, and nationalities are the looks they give me when I talk about my love for R&B music, in particular the neo-soul genre. Some people just find it hard to believe that a goofy white guy like me could be so into soulful music that speaks to so many people on so many levels. I have always thought that a true music fan has no problem reaching out of their own background and favorite genres to explore other areas of music, because at the end of the day, they all influence each other whether you'd like to admit it or not. Yes, I do realize that is pretty comical to picture me having the charisma, vibe, rhythm, or soul of the artists in the largely African American genre, but while I've always admitted I have no rhythm (those of you who have seen me dance or ever tried to sing in choir with me at church in Clarksville no EXACTLY what I'm talking about), I might have a little more soul than you think.

In order to be in this category obviously the artist had to be known as a "neo-soul artist" even they released neo soul material, mainstream soul artists were disqualified. Also receiving votes in this category were "I Just Want You Around" by Lauryn Hill, "On And On" by Erykah Badu, "I Try" by Macy Gray, "Heard It All Before" by Sunshine Anderson, "By Your Side" by Sade, and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley . NOT receiving votes in this category was Lyfe Jennings- I'm sorry everyone, he sucks.

"Pretty Wings"- Maxwell. I tell ya, I really thought Maxwell had disappeared after his release of 2002's "This Woman's Work" and after the success of his third album, "Now". However, last year, he came back with a new look (the hair is gone- sucks, I always thought it was cool), and a new album "BLACKsummer's Night". Maxwell explained his nearly 8 year absence as "just a break", but I hope he doesn't do that to us again, because if he has more songs like this in him, we'll be talking about him for a long time. This song reminds me alot about my life, as it obviously about bad timing in relationships. Several great women have been in my life at bad times for either one of us, and it just didn't work out- and I think Maxwell is talking about that here. While I always thought his hair was cool, I am sure now that casual music fans will stop confusing Maxwell for Lenny Kravitz (I kid you not, I have seen it happen several times!).

"I Wish I Didn't Miss You"- Angie Stone. Angie is one of those artists who probably should have broke out on her own sooner. She spent the early part of her career in soul and funk groups before breaking out with 1999's "Black Diamond" at the age of 37. By the time "Mahogany Soul" rolled around, she was 41 and near an appearance on "Celebrity Fit Club". I really wish I could find a clip of the performance Angie had with Josh Groban of the duet "The Prayer"- it really showed her vocal quality and that she is capable of other genres than the one she is known for. I love this song, because the instrumental (a sample of "Back Stabbers" by the O'Jays) makes me think I'm watching a 1970's black superhero movie.

"Beautiful"- Vivian Green. Beautiful is about right- Vivian Green is hands down the best looking woman on this list. Why do so many women in the entertainment industry get more beautiful as they age? She grows more elegant as she gets older. I've loved her since her 2002 debut "A Love Story", but this new single takes the cake to a new level of awesomeness for Vivian. The first line of this song might be one of the best opening lines of a song I've ever heard. This song, like most of her music is not only madly intense, it's deeply personal. The passion behind her singing rivals the passion of Mary J. Blige- yes I said it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqRur_lxJmM

"The Way"- Jill Scott. I remember getting this album my freshman year of college and not being able to stop playing it. I loved this song before it was released as a single in 2001. This video really cracks me up and we should have known from it that Jill Scott would soon be appearing in films (as she appeared in Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" and the sequel "Why Did I Get Married Too?"). I love the realness and pure raw emotion in her music. She has got to be the most conversational singer I've ever been a fan of. I seriously feel as though we are having a conversation over a solid jazz beat. I think the chronological names of her albums being "Words and Sounds" is pretty appropriate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCerHrqWQkQ

"You're The Only One"- Eric Benet. I have to feel sorry for this guy.......kinda. We all know about his personal "issues", and I won't discuss them, but the guy has lost his father to a sudden death and his girlfriend in an auto accident. He also had Halle Berry leave him- talk about a trio of messed up bad luck. The first two tragedies led to his short hiatus in the late 1990's after first coming on the scene in the early 1990's, and it wasn't until 1996 that his first album was finally released. After his failed marriage with Berry, and getting his life together, Benet came back with 2008's "Love and Life" and this awesome which has a video that shows a concert in his hometown of Milwaukee. This song and album were nominated for Grammy Awards in 2009.

"Previouscats"- Musiq Soulchild. I've featured him several times on here, but I never really hit on his non-single released songs. This one has always been a favorite of mine, and it meant alot to me while I was in college on his 2002 album "Juslisen". Man I must have played the crap out of this album! I really like the way this song and all of his music can relate to any guy's life no matter their circumstances. I've always loved how Musiq's music (man that's funny to say out loud) can remind me of SOMETHING in my life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TKtVB_5-kM

"Don't Stay"- Laura Izibor. Here is another artist I've featured on here before, and yes, I still find it weird that Ireland could produce a neo-soul artist. Nothing against our European friends, just doesn't seem like a hot bed for soul music. This is a beautiful song, but I love the "ok see if I give a crap" attitude of this song- it almost cracks me up. Question of the night- who is that dang actor in the video with her? I have seen him a movie! This may be a dumb question, but who can tell me who that guy is? I really wish the piano was featured more in this audio mix, but this is a great song nonetheless. Also, am I the only person who thinks that Laura Izibor looks like Gloria Reuben from "ER"?

"Her Heart"- Anthony Hamilton. Great live performance here from his tour to support his 2008 album "The Point Of It All". I was into Hamilton immediately in 2003 with the release of "Coming From Where I'm Coming From" (eventhough that is technically his second album). Unlike most of the singers on this list and in the genre, he's from the Southern United States, and his southern accent shows and his life experiences of growing up in the South with gospel roots is clearly shown in his music. This song is no different, but I have to give props to Nicole Jamen for introducing me to this song. This song will always be one of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv-ydiwNhbk

"Free"- Jaguar Wright. I remember my good friend Cristina Barnes (who, as I mentioned last time, has completely dropped off the face of the earth) getting me into Jaguar and her first album "The What Ifs" while we were in a class together at USM. In 2005 Jaguar released her much anticipated follow up, "Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul" and had this song as it's lead single. I love Jaguar's soul, voice, and attitude. She tours so much, she rarely makes time to record, and I am really looking forward to her next album.

"Let Go"- Lalah Hathaway. I think most people knew the first time Lalah Hathaway opened her mouth to sing that she would be destined for greatness. She has the genes of one of the greatest singers of all time in her, and I really wish we could have seen her team up with her late father on some records- that would have been awesome. I think Lalah Hathaway is the epitome of lyrical jazz/neo soul and let me tell you, if you are listening to a jazz mix late at night and need some help relaxing, Lalah Hathaway, much like her late father is great at putting the mind at ease. I think this song is pretty appropriate in that regard.

"Can I Walk With You"- India.Arie. I love every time I find an excuse to put an India song on here. She is just so real! One of the great qualities of not only her music, but of the entire neo soul genre is that you don't have the "smoke and mirrors" of pop music, or even some mainstream R&B. India Arie believes in making herself sexy with what she has and with her music, not by glamorizing things out of proportion. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her second album "Voyage To India" that finally captured Grammy Awards after she was shut out in 8 nominations in 2001. I remember listening to this entire album while me and my mom were driving up the California coast in 2003. What a great album to listen to while you are experiencing some of the greatest natural beauty on Earth. I love a woman who can rock a guitar look and play it too, and India always pulls that one off. This woman absolutely exudes soul.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5CI-lLpcys

"Shrink Me Up"- Darnell Levine. Ok, the first real unknown on the list. I saw Darnell Levine open for my other up and coming favorite Damien Horne in the summer of 2007 in Nashville. I remember him doing this song along with a cover of Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are". Take a listen and check out his website.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DO_icOh24g

"Choux Pastry Heart"- Corinne Bailey Rae. This is a great performance of one of Corinne Bailey Rae's more beautiful songs, and I love how she calls it "Beatles-y". I like the love that the Beatles are shown across genres (as I've always said they have influenced every genre of music, including neo soul), and after changing my mind several times, I have decided that this song does have a slight "Sergeant Pepper" feel to it and could be considered as something the Beatles may have recorded in the 1966-67 period of studio experimentation. I love Corinne's thick British accent, it's almost like it's fake. This song appears on her 2006 debut/self titled album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61YfYvbXrbw

"Hopeless"- Dionne Farris. After the "One Album Wonder" status of Arrested Development had settled in around 1993, most of us figured we'd heard the last of Dionne Farris. However, after her #1 hit "I Know" in 1995, she added this 1997 song from the soundtrack of the movie "Love Jones", which despite having the very sexy Nia Long, I absolutely HATE- but that's another story for another day. This song would actually be a great nominee for the list I had entitled "Great Song, Horrible Movie". Huge bonus points on this one for Randy Jackson playing bass AND being in the video. Has that guy changed at all?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlkJ7JXETr0

"Ordinary People"- John Legend. I remember some of my friends praising John Legend's debut album "Get Lifted" in early 2005, but all I had heard was his first single "Used To Love U", and I have to admit, I HATED it. It wasn't until April 2005 that JL finally released another single, which was this song here. After hearing this one and the rest of his songs, I was hooked, and have been into him ever since. Sometimes it takes more than one try to get into an artist. This video shows the emotional side of Legend's music that I think most people miss. I love how he gets his message across.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIh07c_P4hc

"If I Ain't Got You"- Alicia Keys. I have to admit that I jumped on the Alicia Keys bandwagon almost immediately with the release of her debut album "Songs In A Minor", but it was this song for her second album "The Diary of Alicia Keys" in 2003 that has always done the most for me. This video is kind of lame, and the reason she picked Method Man as the guy in the video is kinda shocking to me. I also hate I can't find a video without the lyrics in it. Alicia Keys is a fantastic performer, and I love the love she shows not only for her man and her music, but for her instrument, one thing I think gets lost in music is the love musicians have for their actual instrument- it seems like a small scene, but I promise you it is very real. Oh yeah, Alicia Keys is one of the sexiest women alive.

The diary of one of the most sexy women alive!
Maybe it was the hair that made me not recognize him
And to think I used to hate this guy!
