Late Night Music Part 12..........Great Song, Horrible Movie!

We've all seen them. Those movies that are hyped up, and yet we leave the theater thinking to ourselves, "seriously?". Sometimes, though not always the case, we are drawn to this movie by a hit song from the upcoming soundtracks by a big name artist that might also be the star of the movie. Think about it, if Celine Dion hadn't been shoved down our throat, would "Titanic" had been so big? Maybe, but it's still something to think about. While there are the movies that are forever great with great soundtracks, ("Love and Basketball", "The Lion King", "Dumb and Dumber", etc.), there are also the ones that have a great song or even a great soundtrack, but still wind up sucking some kind of awful. Take a look/listen to some of those below and see if they bring back any memories, even if they are, uh, bad ones. Also receiving votes in this category were "Purple Rain" by Prince and from the movie of the same name, "Will You Be There" by Michael Jackson from "Free Willy" , "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve and from "Cruel Intentions", and "Somebody's Baby" by Jackson Browne and from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".

"End of the Road"- Boyz II Men ("Boomerang"). This 1992 Eddie Murphy comedy had all the ingredients for a blockbuster African American early 90's comedy. It not only had Eddie Murphy, Robin Givens, the up and coming Martin Lawrence and David Alan Grier, but it also had the late Eartha Kitt and Halle Berry in one of her earliest roles. All of that and this movie was still horrible. I am and will always be a huge Eddie Murphy fan, but his chauvinistic character in this movie is almost TOO over the top and stereotypical. However, the soundtrack, which featured the smash hit by Boyz II Men (which went on to break the record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard 100), is one of the better R & B albums of the early 90's. Boyz II Men had just released "Cooleyhighharmony", and were getting ready for their follow up release "II". Boyz II Men could do no wrong at this time, and they vaulted themselves into super stardom with this hit.

"I Have Nothing"- Whitney Houston ("The Bodyguard"). This movie came on the other night and I stupidly watched it. Seriously, I LOATHE this movie. It is horrible on so many levels. I love Kevin Costner, but this was when he was in his "Waterworld-The Postman-I'm really tough and I'm not" phase in the mid 90's. (strangely enough though, I really like "Prince of Thieves") Anyway, Kevin Costner and Mike Starr as the fearless bodyguard duo is pretty laughable. Whitney Houston, who's character is being targeted by a crazed fan, showed her inexperience in what was her first starring role. Also, the ending and climax of this movie are ridiculous and the fact that it was even written in a script is embarassing. In fact, Kevin Costner was nominated for "Worst Actor" at the annual Gold Rasberry Awards that year. However, like we all know, the soundtrack burned up the TV and the radio, and for the most part, rightfully so. While I grew tired of "I Will Always Love You", Whitney shows the diva she is here in the much better "I Have Nothing". Still one of my favorite female voices ever.

"All For Love"- Bryan Adams, Sting, and Rod Stewart ("The Three Musketeers"). This Disney movie isn't even worth writing about. It is seriously one of the only movies I have seen that I couldn't tell you anything about. All I remember is watching it and not knowing anything that happened in it. Even the great song by these 3 guys couldn't save it. In some ways, I think it's a rather strange trio here, but they have a suprisingly pleasant blend. Bryan Adams seems to be the guy that made a living off of soundtracks songs. Hey, whatever works.

"Against All Odds" - Phil Collins ("Against All Odds"). Part of the problem may be that I saw "The Big Lebowski" before seeing this movie. I'm sorry, Jeff Bridges just doesn't come across as anyone who could play a pro football player after playing Jeff Lebowski. Also, nothing against Rachel Ward, but she is seriously not hot enough to play a woman that many guys are fighting over. This movie is stupid, skip it. However, we all remember Phil Collins great song. Mariah Carey later covered that version and it is also worth a listen.

"Elephant Love Medley" - Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor ("Moulin Rouge"). I never got on the Moulin Rouge bandwagon. I just couldn't do it. Sorry, but I don't seem to be interested in watching a movie about a man who wants to marry a prostitute. However, these two show off their deceptively gifted vocal talents with this song. I have always wanted to sing this song karaoke...........Judith?

"Cruisin'" - Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow ("Duets"). This song may have the largest ratio of movie suckage to soundtrack awesomeness of any one on this list. There are some GREAT musical sequences in this movie about the world of competitive karaoke. However, I am not a fan of a single actor in this movie, including the overrated Paul Giamatti and Gwyneth Paltrow. But, while Huey Lewis can't play dead, he puts forth a great duet here with Gwyneth Paltrow.

"Cross My Heart" - George Strait ("Pure Country"). I really hate movies where singers play singers. These films, while autobiographical to a certain extent, come off as cocky to me and make them really hard to watch. This one is no exception, especially when we are talking about George Strait, who apparently couldn't play dead if he wanted to. God never intended for country singers to be actors. Sadly though, this song is a great country ballad anthem that I can say I've heard at weddings, rodeos, dances, and of course live music events. Just would be nice if George Strait would promise to never make another movie, Cross His Heart.

"How Deep Is Your Love" - Bee Gees ("Saturday Night Fever"). Whatever. Love the Bee Gees, but I don't even have to say anything, just look at the picture below.

"Stay" - Lisa Loeb and the Nine Stories ("Reality Bites"). Interesting facts about this one. First of all, this was Lisa Loeb's debut, as well as Ethan Hawke's directorial debut as he directed the video. Still, while I love Ben Stiller, he's just too as mom says "trying too hard", and this movie with the VERY overrated Winona Ryder is no exception. Another interesting fact is that Ben Stiller actually directed this movie too- watch the movie and tell me if that surprises you. Great song, one of my favorites. I think her nerd look adds to it.

See what I mean?
Those 3 big names should have been a recipe for success right?
Make you wanna see it? Yeah I thought so......
Spectacular soundtrack, the movie? Not so much
