Saints release Dwight Smith

It's falling into place. It was announced early this morning that the Saints will be releasing their starting strong safety, Dwight Smith. Smith, who had a stellar season at strong safety taking the place of injured but now healthy Jay Bellamy, was conceivably released to free up his large salary. While a great player, he is a Drew Rosenhaus player, which automatically makes him expensive. This frees up money to sign Reggie Bush, and also frees the way for Bellamy to return to stong safety and seemingly would keep Josh Bullocks at free safety, with Roman Harper waiting in the wings to take over eventually for Bellamy. Eventhough I hate to see Smith go, the Saints still have Steve Gleason to back up Bellamy and obviously second round draft pick Harper from Alabama. I like the direction the Saints are going right now to develop young players behind veterans, and then insert them when they get ready and get them valuable on field experience. I have said over and over again that this is the way the team needs to build. I just hate that it cost us a really good cover safety. Happy trails, Dwight Smith.
