Late Night Music Part 102............"Acapella"

I forget how this one triggered, but I was talking about acapella songs at work the other night, and this idea popped up in my head. Sorry it took me so long. Sorry I don't have much else clever here. I just really am looking forward to getting this one published. Really great variety on this one.

In order to be included on this list, the song had to be in accapella (duh). In a rare "Late Night Music" feat, all songs receiving votes were included on this list.

"Michael Jackson Medley"- Sam Tsui. Sam Tsui is one of those recent artists who made a name for himself by posting popular viral videos on youtube. This guy's voice is amazing and his balls to tackle a medley of the king of pop (AFTER his passing no less) is in itself incredible. Due to this immense popularity of doing cover songs on youtube. He released the digital album "The Covers" in 2010. I can listen to this medley 100 times and never get sick of it, but I am BEGGING Sam Tsui to find a different pair of pants to wear in his future videos. Just look and see what I mean. All vocals on this track are Sam Tsui with the exception with his "bandmate" Kurt Schneider who provides all the percussion sounds. Only thing I hate about this song is that it's nearly impossible to perform live.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R12QVtuB0_Q

"Lady Gaga Medley"- Naya Marie. Naya Marie is another up and coming artist from Toronto who has spent several nights, unknown to her, singing me to sleep. Some of you may remember the "Love Will Never Do Without You/ California Gurls" mashup with Shannon Alvares I put up recently, but this song is still my favorite by her. To add bonus points, Naya is not only better looking than Lady Gaga, she's a better singer. There I said it. This track, which features all vocals by her, would also be virtually impossible to perform live, but is SO cool. To check out more of Naya Marie's music check her out at www.nayamarie.blogspot.com or www.myspace.com/nayamariemusic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGKErn2Zr88

"It's Alright"- Huey Lewis and the News. COVER SONG ALERT! In the mid/late 80's Huey Lewis and The News were one of the biggest acts in the world with their albums "Fore!", "Sports", and "Picture This". A lot of people didn't give Huey Lewis his due as a more than capable soul artist pulling off this cover of Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions hit from 1963 which reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. This version was released 30 years later in 1993 on the Mayfield tribute album "People Get Ready".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI7qhV36FQ0

"The Longest Time"- Billy Joel. In 1983, Billy Joel released one of his most famous albums (and that's saying a lot seeing how the man has TWO Best Album Grammys) "An Innocent Man", which was a concept album paying homage to the "music of his childhood", with this particular song being a tribute to the doo wop groups of the 1950's. By the time this song was released in 1984, the album was already a hit, but this was definitely the coolest song of the bunch and the coolest video. Bonus points for the janitor whistling "The Stranger" in the opening of the video, and more bonus points for the band of Joel actually lip synching good enough to make us think they were really singing. All 14 vocal tracks on this song were sung by Billy Joel. This song reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and this album was nominated for yet another Album of the Year Grammy, but it lost to a little album you may have heard of called "Thriller". Quick- name another Joel song that reached the Top 20 that DOESN'T feature him playing the piano. I can't either. Still one of the most underrated pure musicians in music history here. Oh yeah, my dad always got cracked up with the janitor joining in at the end.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_XgQhMPeEQ

"Don't Worry, Be Happy"- Bobby McFerrin. In 1988, Bobby McFerrin became a very famous one hit wonder by having the first ever acapella song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Every sound on the record is made by McFerrin's voice. Unfortunately, McFerrin was never happy with the publicity this song brought him, and he no longer performs it in his concerts. Despite this, McFerrin has gone on to enjoy a successful jazz music career. Bonus points for Robin Williams in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-diB65scQU

"A Capella (Something's Missing)"- Brandy. Ok, so this one is a borderline one because it DOES feature an electric guitar, but it's the only thing on the record that isn't Brandy's voice. This song was included on Brandy's 2008 album "Human", and while the album hadn't done as well as her previous releases, this album and this song in particular were praised by critics for Brandy showing her true vocal talent. I've never been a huge Brandy fan despite her being a fellow Mississippian, but this is a super cool song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdRq4oFFQl8

"Can You Stand The Rain?"- Boyz II Men. COVER SONG ALERT!!!!!!! I can't think of many groups who can pull off a New Edition song and do it not only just as good, but better. The song was originally featured on New Editions's 1988 album "Heart Break" (their first Johnny Gill album) and reached #44 on the Billboard Hot 100. This version was featured on Boyz II Men's 1997 mega smash album "Evolution". As you can imagine, this song had to be stupid hard to do live. When I saw Boyz II Men live in 1998, they did a piano version of this song that was really cool. I have to think they did it just to make it easier to sing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCVIqHkOHr0

"She's Out Of My Life"- 98 Degrees. I get so mad when people say 98 Degrees was a "stupid boy band". They were a pure quartet who had R/B soul, but just happened to be white. As goofy as Nick Lachey is and as dumb as his marriage and TV show with Jessica Simpson was, the guy has a mad awesome voice. This track closed out their sophomore smash album "98 Degrees and Rising". Oh yeah COVER SONG ALERT! This original song was Michael Jackson's smash album "Off The Wall" in 1979. A few cover versions have been attempted (including a very bad one by Genuwine), but this one is the only one that measures up. Honestly, I would have liked to have seen the Jackson 5 do this song rather than MJ. This is a great song to close out an album, and I think it showed that 98 Degrees was serious about keeping their R&B image.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUFNPsp14SY

"So Much In Love"- All-4-One. Another underrated group, All-4-One had to be one of the goofiest and most unlikely R&B groups ever. Seriously, just look at these guys. However, their blend of vocals was nearly impeccable and they actually recorded all of their music around 1 microphone rather than using individuals. In all honesty, I think if they wouldn't have looked so dang silly they might have been more successful than they already were. This was the lead single from their debut self titled album which is actually another COVER SONG ALERT! The song was a #1 hit in 1963 for the group the times. This version for All-4-One peaked at #28, but gave them exposure before their smash hit "I Swear". Interesting fact- All-4-One had 3 top 40 hits. All 3 were cover songs. Yikes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsu4yRmxNWc

"Sukiyaki"- 4pm. I know I showed these guys before, but this song is pretty cool, and how often are we really gonna talk about 4pm? 4pm did themselves in by saying their name stood for "4 Positive Music" in the 90's when the "violent and sex music" era was beginning. Smart move? As I stated before, I heard this song a lot in England while I was there in 1995, as the song was widely popular in Europe. This again is another COVER SONG ALERT!!!!!!!!!!! This Japanese hit for Kyu Sakamoto was translated into English (partially- we all know how translating to make songs rhyme works- just look at Julio Iglesias) for 4pm's 1995 album "It's The Time" and hit #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave 4pm their 15 minutes of fame, which I guess lasted until 4:15. I crack myself up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSYS7cPc3nE

"If I Ever Fall In Love"- Shai. Yes! One of my all time favorite groups to make fun of. This title track off of their debut album in 1992 was a hit peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, but I'm still confused. If you ever watch/listen to Shai, you can see they are good singers, but they remind of Dru Hill in the fact that they don't really have all 4 vocal parts present to be a real quartet. Funny how they pulled this one off. Anyway, super cool song by a good 90's band here. However, this video is even worse than "Baby, I'm Yours". What a goober bunch of guys.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXNNVUuIDgc

"Firework"- Mike Tompkins. Ok, I had to include this new viral hit by multitrack master Mike Tompkins. The amount of tracks on this song is ridiculous, and all sounds are made by Mike Tompkins. Like the other multitracks, and even more so, this one would be impossible to do live. However, super cool video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyepYaE_JS4

BONUS VIDEO- "Love Will Never Do Without You/California Gurls"- Naya Marie and Shannon Alvares. Had to put it on here- SUPER COOL!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG4XFOOKa20

4PM
Most ridiculous R&B group ever? WTF!

Late Night Music Osama Bin Laden is Dead Edition Part 101............"The Other Song"

Sometimes I wonder why one hit wonders are one hit wonders. Sometimes I even catch myself thinking what their other songs sound like, or even if they have any other songs (we all remember "That Thing You Do!"- they never even recorded an album). This list focuses on just that, the "other songs" by one hit wonders. Sometimes they are really good, but sometimes we see all too well they they were one hit wonders.

In order to receive votes in this category, the song had to be a lesser known song by a group that is primarily known for having one song. Also receiving votes in this category were "Touch My Light" by Big Mountain, "Bedsitter" by Soft Cell, "Sky" by Sonique, and "I Don't Want To Be A Hero" by Johnny Hates Jazz.

"Superman's Song"- Crash Test Dummies. Before their 1993 hit "Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm" and the subsequent album "God Shuffled His Feet", our friends from Canada made some minor waves with this minor hit that was the lead single from their debut album "The Gods That Haunt Me". Like I said before, this song was as if it was being sung at Superman's funeral, and the video depicts several aging superheroes gathered at the funeral for Superman. Luckily for Crash Test Dummies, their best days were ahead of them. "Superman's Song" peaked at #56 on the Billboard Hot 100, while they would hit #4 with their one and only major hit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihUIPlLw2ZE

"Someday We'll Know"- New Radicals. In 1998, the New Radicals made major headlines calling out other artists with their major hit "You Get What You Give", which called out Beck, Hanson, and Marilyn Manson to name a few. The video was widely popular and the song peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached #5 in the United Kingdom. The follow up single from their debut album (and only album) "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" was this song, which was later covered by Hall and Oates. I always hated lead singer Gregg Alexander's voice. Also, in 1999, he disbanded the group (which always had a "revolving door" policy anyway) due to him being "frustrated with touring and promotion". I'm sorry, but isn't that the point of having a band? In the all time cop out move, the New Radicals faded into oblivion after this very weird video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDmA8qQKhMY

"You're All That Matters To Me"- Curtis Stigers. I always loved Curtis Stigers one and only hit "I Wonder Why" which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991, and the guy just drips with cool. This lead single from his debut self titled album would be his only moment in the sun, as this follow up single failed to even chart. Stigers still continues to have a pretty good following on the jazz circuit, but he has never returned to the Billboard Hot 100. I hate it, because this song here is freaking fantastic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_kgytAyYWM

"Hopeless"- Dionne Farris. In 1992, Dionne Farris was in one of the hottest groups in the world when Arrested Development took home the Grammy for Best New Artist. In 1995, she began a solo career and hit #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the hit "I Know" (a song I never really cared for). However, in 1997, she recorded this really good song for the soundtrack for the movie "Love Jones" starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate. Despite this really good track and the star power of future "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson (seen in the video), this song never charted, and Dionne Farris has never returned to the charts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlkJ7JXETr0

"St. Teresa"- Joan Osborne. We all remember Joan Osborne's 1995 worldwide Catholic baiting sacrilegious song about talking to God from her critically acclaimed album "Relish" which was actually nominated for the Best Album Grammy in 1996. While she was still on top of the world with a #4 Billboard hit, Joan released this song as the follow up, and this really weird video to go along with it. I think that maybe the drastic change in style from "One Of Us" to the song pushed away the casual fans, and this song failed to chart. This song is decent, but I keep being strangely attracted to Joan Osborne. Maybe it's the nosering.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbAeTywPiP4

"Charlie Brown's Parents"- Dishwalla. I actually heard this song for the first time when Dishwalla was a guest on "Rick Dees and Weekly Top 40" in 1996 to promote their album "Pet Your Friends" as well as their hit "Counting Blue Cars", which peaked at #15 that same year. Dishwalla wouldn't release another single until this song was released in 1998 (even though it was also included on "Pet Your Friends"). This song remains a fan favorite at Dishwalla concerts, but it failed to chart, and Dishwalla failed to ever get back in the spotlight again. However, this song is really good and really clever in nature. I really like this video too. Bonus points for the deputy sheriffs making me think I'm watching "Reno 911!".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubdmyms-Lts

"When I See You Smile"- Uncle Sam. I actually saw Uncle Sam open for Boyz II Men in 1998 on the heels of his one and only hit "I Don't Ever Wanna See You Again", which had hit #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1997. This cover of Bad English's 1989 #1 hit (COVER SONG ALERT!) was actually recorded for the TV Show "Touched By An Angel", but never appeared on the charts. I hate that, because I've always thought this was a really good version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mE98whggDs

"Sherry Fraser"- Marcy Playground. Now here is a really cool band. Marcy Playground burst onto the scene in 1997 with the controversial hit song "Sex and Candy" from their critically acclaimed debut self titled album. The controversial video for the song helped steam it into the top 10, where it peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Later in 1998, this single also from the same album was released and received moderate radio airplay to go along with the video which was popular on MTV2. This song was actually about their friend Sherry Fraser, the founder of the band Two Ton Boa. However, the song never charted. This was always without a doubt my favorite Marcy Playground song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJhL3VOOatA

"Shimmer"- Shawn Mullins. In 1998, Shawn Mullins had already established a small name for himself across the South when he released his hit album "Soul's Core". The album spawned his only Top 10 hit "Lullabye" which peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow up single "Shimmer" was included on the soundtracks for the show "Dawson's Creek" and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and was considered the unofficial anthem of the games. Despite that, the song never charted on the Billboard Hot 100, but peaked at #27 on the dreaded Adult Contemporary Chart. Shawn Mullins continues to tour and release material, but he has never recaptured his past successes. Just thank God he cut his hair. Maybe if he hadn't have looked so evil in the 90's he'd be more popular today. Bonus points for Shawn Mullins once saying in an interview on VH1 that the worst gig he ever played was in Jackson, Mississippi. Says a lot about our live music scene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9doqLZdSQfQ

"She's Trouble"- Musical Youth. In 1982, Musical Youth took the world by storm with their worldwide debut single "Pass the Dutchie". However, these kids from England passed the dutchie on their career only released 2 albums. This song was so obscure I am actually surprised I could find a video for it. This was their last single they released in 1984 and it peaked at #65. Bonus points for the red headband, but negative bonus points for picking a lead female in the video that doesn't look like "she's trouble".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up93ykpG07E

"Someone To Love You"- Ruff Endz. Ok here is one I never understood. Their 2000 #5 hit "No More", was always more popular, but this song is SO much better despite peaking at just #49 and not getting near as much airplay. After the success of "No More" and their debut album "Love Crimes", this title track from the follow up album was expected to put the group over the top, but unfortunately for Ruff Endz, there were just too many groups around at the time of similar genre like Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, Blackstreet, and even Avant. This song has always been one of my favorite R & B songs of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VJZgJ8oEdw

"I'll Find A Way"- Blu Cantrell. Blu Cantrell is one that has always baffled me. First of all, girl could SING. Second, she is absolutely beautiful. In a halfway joking way, I think the fact that she looks and sounds so much like Faith Evans actually hurt her. After being pushed heavily by L.A. Reid and Arista Records, her 2001 debut album "So Blu" and her debut single "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)" were all over the radio, with the latter peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Cantrell followed up that success with this big budget video, but the song never reached the Billboard Hot 100, and peaked at #104, yes #104 on the US R & B Charts. Every time I hear this song I'm baffled because I absolutely love it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGUpm7pg6ao

"Love Is A Marathon"- Teddy Geiger. During the 2005 NFL Playoffs, CBS put about forty bazillion dollars into advertising the new show "Love Monkey", which featured Tom Cavanagh (of "Ed" fame- my favorite show ever), Jason Priestley, Larenz Tate, and Christopher Wiehl (who was fresh off of success from ESPN's "Playmakers"). The show centered around Cavanagh, who played record exec Tom Ferrell and the artists he discovered. The show was cancelled after 3 episodes. I was pissed. Luckily, the remaining episodes later aired on VH1, but I really wish this show would have been given a chance. However, the show did give us the discovery of 18 year old phenom Teddy Geiger, who sang the theme song "For You I Will (Confidence)", which also went on to be a hit single from his major label debut album "Underaged Thinking", and went on to peak at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and get some decent radio airplay. Teddy Geiger remains a good draw in college towns, but has not returned to the charts. This song, however, from that same album, has always meant a lot to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StT-z-yRYVs

"Toxic"- Yael Naim. Take notice, because this will be the only time a song by Britney Spears (COVER SONG ALERT!) will appear on this list. Israeli singer Yael Naim became popular with her song "New Soul" when it was used in 2008 by Apple on its commercial for its new product MacBook Air. The song went on to peak at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her self-titled album gathered some attention for that song, as well as this cover song which gives a pretty interesting twist to Britney Spears. Very strange, but super bonus points for creativity.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWxy142kIMk

"Vanilla Twilight"- Owl City. Bonus points for Shaq!!!!!!!!!!!! This video is so cool, and I love how this serious love song can have such a silly video. Owl City is one of the most talented singers out there right now. This song, from his popular album "Ocean Eyes" was the follow up single to "Fireflies", which peaked at #1 on the charts, putting Owl City into the mainstream. Despite this song's big budget video, this song only peaked at #72 on the charts. I almost feel like I'm cheating on this one, because I think Owl City has some more hits in him- I hope.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIz2K3ArrWk

"California Day"- Starland Vocal Band. I had to do it. I apologize for the user made video- it was the only one I could find, but this is actually a really good song, which was the follow up to their #1 hit "Afternoon Delight" in 1976 on their debut self titled album. This song peaked at #66.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbK14v70oDs

"U Go Girl"- Tag Team. If you knew this song, you truly have less of a life than me. This song was actually the follow up single to "Whoomp! (There It Is)". I wish I was making that up.

Late Night Music NBA Playoffs/NFL Draft Edition Part 100.........."Pigott's Favorite Bands....Live! Part 1"

For my 100th entry, I figured I would just show some of my favorite videos of some of my favorite artists playing live sets. In order to be on this list, the song had to be featured during a live recording of a live album, a live concert, or on live television. The venues are all included for every video. Several of my favorite artists were not included in this list just because I plan on making several, so don't be like "hey you forgot!", because I promise you I didn't. I won't be writing about these videos because these performances speak for themselves.

"It Ends Tonight"- All American Rejects (Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).

Late Night Music Part 99.........."Hippety Hop"

People have told me a few times lately that I never have enough rap on here and that I'm not even a hip hop "fan". That is totally not true, but I do admit that not a lot of hip hop songs fit into a lot of my categories. However, here is my attempt to gain some street cred by making my first ever hip hop list.

Also receiving votes in this category were "I Wish" by Skee-Lo, "Slam" by Onyx, "How's It Going Down?" by DMX, "Throw Some D's On It" by Rich Boy, "Area Codes" by Ludacris, "Damn" by the Youngbloodz, and "Arab Money" by Busta Rhymes. NOT RECEIVING VOTES was anything by Drake- sorry guys, he REALLY sucks. Also, Kanye West was disqualified just because he's a douche. Also due to their Super Bowl halftime show sucking, the Black Eyed Peas were disqualified. Also, Ja Rule was disqualified just because- do I really have to explain?

"Dynamite"- Taio Cruz. Our friend from England here tricks me and makes me think I'm watching a trailer for "Fast Five". This song from Taio Cruz's album "Rokkstar" peaked last year at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit #1 in several countries. For the record, I really like this song and I really like the acapella version by Mike Tompkins (I smell a bonus video). I think Taio is a pretty good singer, but he looks like he mentally handicapped yet still gets all these beautiful women in his video. Must be the money.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUjdiDeJ0xg

"DJ Got Us Falling In Love"- Usher featuring Pitbull. Pitbull being on this song ALMOST takes it off the list. However, this song from Usher's latest album "Versus" is one of my favorite Usher tracks ever. This song surprisingly flew under the radar to peak at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Usher is one of those guys I can never really really get into, but then he has joints like this that make you wanna listen. I hate how he does that. I will also venture to say that Usher might be the best dancer since Michael Jackson. Bonus points for the time freeze in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-dvTjK_07c

"I'm Single"- Lil' Wayne. Yes, I know Lil' Wayne has many other popular songs, but this one has always been my favorite just because it's so different. Also, let me say I AM A FAN OF LIL' WAYNE!!!!! However, despite me being a fan, I really think he's very overrated. To call him "the most talented rapper ever" is pretty stupid and to call him a "heartfelt poet" is even more stupid. People forget rap pioneers so quick it's ridiculous. Anyway, this song's remix was released on the remix album "No Ceilings" but featured Drake- that version you won't see here. This version was never released as a single and was featured on Lil' Wayne's 2010 album "I Am Not A Human Being". This song has always been popular among Lil' Wayne fans, and is one of the few songs I've seen in my life that wasn't a single but still has a music video. This video will also go down as the most ghetto video I've seen in a long time. This song is also dedicated to Amir Wilson- he knows why.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-dvTjK_07c

"Rodeo"- Juvenile. This song from Juvenile's album "Reality Check" is without a doubt my favorite song by him. This song is actually really deep and showed that Juvenile is capable of writing really profound (yes I said profound) lyrics. This song never got as much pub as his other songs. Quietly, this song climbed to #41 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bonus points for obvious reasons on this video, I am just actually really surprised that the dancers and club owners allowed footage of actual dancers in the club. I realize it's a world famous club but WOW. Also, bonus points for the sample track of R Kelly's "Bump and Grind" on this track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5ATUCocIyc

"Sweat"- Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg lives most guys fantasies on a pretty regular basis. Note to all my friends- I pretty much want a bachelor party like this video. This lead single off of "Doggumentary" was actually more successful in the remix version. I know most people would disagree, but I think Snoop's most recent stuff that hasn't been as successful on the charts is actually better than his early Death Row stuff. I am sure I'm in the minority on that one, but this song right here is banging.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hgf6jkp8bwQ

"Tip Drill"- Nelly. This video made waves as being one of the most edited and controversial videos of all time. And even a guy who likes women as much as me thinks this one is overboard. This track was featured on Nelly's 2003 remix album "Da Derrty Versions- The Reinventions". I've never been much of a Nelly fan, and yeah this song is a guilty pleasure, but I'm pretty entertained by the fact that Nelly had a song on the country charts less than a year later. I'm taking away bonus points for the inclusion of the St. Lunatics on this song.

"Buy You A Drank"- T-Pain featuring Young Joc. This song shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2007 off of T-Pain's second album "Epiphany" and, despite being played to death by virtually every radio station, put T-Pain at the top of the mainstream music scene. I have to admit that I always liked T-Pain's mixture of rap (even if it is Young Joc) and his studio correction of his voice. He's the most creative artist I've ever seen in that regard, just must be pretty hard to do live. I'm taking away bonus points in this video for the same scene being shown over and over again. I think T-Pain really don't know where he wanted to go with this video. Almost seems rushed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8tX9hOSftk

"In A Daze"- JBar featuring Soulja Boy. I really hate to admit that I like a song that features Soulja Boy, but this song that I heard for the first time at Electric Cowboy last week is straight banging. This single will be featured on the upcoming debut album for JBar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXZGGt2B82o

"Regulate"- Nate Dogg and Warren G. Probably my favorite rap song ever. Bonus points immediately for the late Nate Dogg. This song and the soundtrack album for the 1994 movie "Above The Rim" was one of the last big hit for Death Row Records, and is one of the most successful soundtrack album of all time. Despite featuring Tupac, the movie was pretty forgettable and this song is a nominee for the "Great Song, Horrible Movie" list that I featured in 2009. Like the album, this single hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1994. The track was also featured on Warren G's debut album "Regulate...G Funk Era", but Warren G never gained the fame that he gained on this track, partially due to the decline of Death Row Record after the death of Tupac in 1996. More bonus points for the sample of "I Keep Forgetting" by Michael McDonald.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1plPyJdXKIY

"Today Was A Good Day"- Ice Cube. Bonus points immediately for being one of only 2 rap songs I've ever had as my status more than once (the other being "Rodeo"), but I'm gonna take em right back for Ice Cube's jheri curl being gone. It had to have been one of the best in the history of rap music from his days in NWA. I love how Stan Verrett on ESPN uses the line "messed around and got a triple double" in a lot of his basketball highlights on Sportscenter. I would be willing to bet that most people don't get it. This song was featured on Ice Cube's 1993 album "The Predator" and peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Again more bonus points for the sample on this one. Probably the best one so far with "Footsteps In The Dark" by the Isley Brothers. I love how Ice Cube was one of the most hard core gangster rappers in history, and now makes family friendly films. Pretty funny.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opQRwaF5p8o

"Black And Yellow"- Wiz Khalifa. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Wiz Khalifa is quite possibly the only rapper ever born in Alaska- just going out on a limb on that one. I've never been a Steelers, Pirates, or Penguins fan, but I like how this song has become the unofficial theme song of the teams and the city. This song from his album "Rolling Papers" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UePtoxDhJSw

"99 Problems"- Jay-Z. I had a hard time picking which Jay-Z song to use, but I had to use the song that usually reminds me the most of my life. This track was featured on his critically acclaimed 2004 mega album "The Black Album". While this song only peaked at #30 on the Billboard Hot 100, it's probably Jay-Z's most popular song behind "Empire State Of Mind". The song won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 2005, and the video was nominated for the Best Video VMA the same year. Bonus points for album producer Rick Rubin making a cameo in the video as the old white guy in the car. He is also mentioned near the end of the track "you're crazy for this one Rick".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwoM5fLITfk

"Not Afraid"- Eminem. I'm just glad to hear a song where Eminem doesn't complain about his life. He would be so much better if that's all he did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5-yKhDd64s

"Stay Fly"- 3 6 Mafia. I always laugh thinking about the time I met these guys. Not only were they hammered, they were absolute idiots. This song from their 2005 album "Most Known Unknown" was their catapult into mainstream fame hitting #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and still remaining their signature song. This video just makes me laugh- these guys are pretty good rappers, but they just LOOK like idiots. Also bonus points for how much you laugh at all the lyrics edited out on this version. Might be a record.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBjzAdpZzf0

"Hustlin'"- Rick Ross. This debut single from Rick Ross in 2006 is my theme song for life. Bonus points for his beard- might be the best in music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU9TouRnO84

"1, 2, 3, 4, (Sumpin' New)"- Coolio. Coolio rode the wave of fame from his worldwide mega hit "Gangsta's Paradise" by releasing the album of the same name and featuring the single on the soundtrack of the 1995 movie "Dangerous Minds". This follow up single reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996. I always thought this was one of the better rap songs to dance to, and I tell ya, I really think Coolio is pretty comical, but he's a really good rapper. He's one of the more articulate rappers but still keeps his persona in his music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udj1E7muOdg

"So Fresh So Clean"- Outkast. I used to think "Stankonia" was the best rap album ever made (and it is still one of the best ever), and this was without a doubt my favorite song, which was featured for a short time on my cell phone voicemail. This song is so freaking cool. While it didn't reach the top of the charts like other Outkast songs, it still did ok topping out at #30. I hate that there is no video available for this song, because this music video, like most Outkast videos is freaking hilarious.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IADdGzHreFQ

"Miami"- Will Smith. This song when the award for the one that got stuck in my head the most. Will Smith shows in this video that while he drips with cool, he can NOT dance. I don't feel so bad any more. Bonus points for Eva Mendes, his future "Hitched" co-star, making one of her first professional appearances in the video. This video won the VMA for Best Male Video in 1998.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHdmt9FxlYo

"U Can't Touch This"- MC Hammer. You know knew every word..........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otCpCn0l4Wo

"What You Know?"- T.I.. Bonus points right off the bat for Mike Epps!!!!!!!! This song accompanied T.I. in the 2006 film and acting debut of T.I., "ATL" and was also featured on his album "King". This song went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and I have to admit is my favorite all time pre game song to ever play. Anyone who ever played in an intramural championship game that I was a part of would know this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZJW-rkVKFE

"6 Feet Deep"- Geto Boys. Seeing Bushwick Bill from the Geto Boys and listening to these guys is proof that ANYONE and yes I mean ANYONE can strike it lucky and throw together a decent rap career in the United States. These guys were quite possibly the most overrated rap group ever, and I think used the gimmick of Bushwick Bill to make them even semi famous. Despite that, this is a decent song and it gets bonus points for sampling "Easy" by the Commodores.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwEgYyvlW5U

"Crossroads"- Bone Thugs N' Harmony. Honestly, I hate this song and this group. I put it on here just because I know someone would complain if I didn't.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9IXAJg4Vm0

"Forgot About Dre"- Dr. Dre featuring Eminem. People wanna act like I forgot about Dre.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5a93wABHNM

"Hail Mary"- 2pac. Ok I know you were worried. There is no way in the world I would leave off Tupac, still to me the best rapper ever. This single was the final single from his final completed studio album during his life "Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory" which was released under what was to be 2pac's new stage name, Makaveli. This was without a doubt his darkest video, and one of his darkest songs on an album that was probably his most emotional.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgjA5NLFjKM

"Like A Pimp"- David Banner featuring Lil' Flip. Yeah.....um.....about that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKGQ5cIw_ew

BONUS VIDEO- "Dynamite"- Mike Tompkins. Just proof that hip hop music can be really diverse despite what people think.

Late Night Music Part 98.........."You May Be Wrong, But You May Be Right"

I have to admit that I actually started this one too late at night to finish it- if you wanna call "night" 5:00 in the morning. So, I'm putting up a rare daytime blog, but the funniest part is that this is already night time to some of you. This list was another random musing in my head- I can't really explain why it came to me.

In order to receive votes in this category, the song title had to have the word "Right" in it. Also receiving votes in this category were "Red Right Hands" by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, "Right Here Right Now" by Fatboy Slim, "Right On Time" by Red Hot Chili Peppers, and "Right In Time" by Lucinda Williams. Super Honorable Mention is "Right Where You Belong" by Dave Barnes- how is there no video for this anywhere? NOT RECEIVING VOTES was "Right Above It" by Lil' Wayne and Drake......sorry, Drake will never appear on this list.

"Right Where You Wanted Me"- Jamie Floyd. I'll start this list with one of my favorite up and coming artists and my absolute favorite song by her. When I was living in the Nashville area, I made a point to catch Jamie Floyd about 5 times, and each time I saw her she was nothing short of spectacular. She recently had the opportunity to play the Grand Ole Opry, and I think it's just a matter of time before she's the next big female singer/songwriter out of Nashville. I listen to this song and I relate to it so much- the passion and emotion that went into writing and recording this song is evident. Also, big bonus points from the opening line mentioning Mississippi.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNbmR5ftX7I

"You May Be Right"- Billy Joel. Billy Joel was one of the biggest acts in music in the late 70's with back to back Grammy Awards for Best Album for "The Stranger" and "52nd Street". However, in 1980, he drastically changed his sound with his first real rock album "Glass Houses". As you can see from this song, many of the songs on this album didn't even feature Joel's crazy awesome piano playing. Sadly though, the album cover DID feature his Rocky Balboa look a like haircut. Sadly, I think he looks cooler bald now. Despite the drastic change in sound, "Glass Houses" went on to sell over 7 million copies, and "You May Be Right" went on to peak at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo9t5XK0FhA

"Must Be Doin' Something Right"- Billy Currington. You know, I can't remember the last time I sang this song karaoke. Despite me featuring it on here several times and my karaoke love affair with it, Billy Currington still makes me throw up just seeing this video. Why does he have to be so cool? Who am I fooling? I freaking love this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbQfE2Oi6Wo

"Get It Right"- From the Cast of "Glee". In the most recent episode of "Glee" the New Directions thought it would be more beneficial to write original songs for their set at regionals in order to capture first place. Two original songs were debuted for the show (rather than the usual cover song format), with this ballad sung by Lea Michele being the first one. I see this video and hear this song and I actually get kinda upset because I know it's a matter of time before Lea Michele leaves "Glee" to start a solo career. Honestly, I think she'll do just fine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj6gfz10cS8

"Get Me Right"- Dashboard Confessional. This song was the lead track to Dashboard Confessional's 2009 album "Alter The Ending". DC showed a more mature side with this album, and actually re released the album as a deluxe edition with nearly all the songs, including this one, recorded in acoustic settings. Chris Carraba is one awesome guitar player.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqDMKqFZdjw

"Right Thru Me"- Nicki Minaj. Ok, this isn't the official video, because I hate the edited version of this song. Also, the official video of this song is SO lame. In addition, I really have never cared for Nicki Minaj- I mean this song is pretty good, but she's just not a rapper- I just can't buy it. She has a nice voice, and yes, she SMOKING HOT BEAUTIFUL, but I think she's pretty overrated otherwise. I hate that she's called "the Barbie of hip hop" when Ciara is way more beautiful and way more talented. Anyway, this song off of her album "Pink Friday" reached #4 on the hip hop charts and peaked at #26 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1ZvaQf76g4

"Right Round"- Flo Rida. Bonus points right off the bat for sampling and almost covering "You Spin Me Round" by Dead or Alive (I smell a bonus video). This song off of Flo Rida's album "R.O.O.T.S." hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was in no doubt helped by it's inclusion on the soundtrack of "The Hangover". By my view, I really don't think Flo Rida is anything special, but this is a pretty catchy track. My favorite fact about this song is that we actually "remixed" it ourselves at Faith Outreach Church and made a Christian version of this song called "I've got to praise him". He works in mysterious ways.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcCw1ggftuQ

"Right Here Waiting"- Richard Marx. Just a little bit of a change of genre here. Richard Marx showed signs of his future success on the dreaded ADULT CONTEMPORARY chart with this worldwide #1 hit from his second album "Repeat Offender". Okay, small soap box here. Not knocking anything about Richard Marx, but if you are gonna make the kind of music he makes, don't have an album title that sounds like a Guns N' Roses album- seriously misleading there. That's almost as bad as the Isleys having the white couple on the cover of "This Old Heart Of Mine". This song has been one of the staples of 80's soft "rock" and has been covered by a few artists, including a great version by Monica and 112 (I smell another bonus video).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_E2EHVxNAE

"Right Here Right Now"- Jesus Jones. Our friends from England opened up the 90's with one of the first one hit wonders of the decade with this song from their album "Doubt" climbing to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, only to never be heard from again. I realize it was 1990 at the time, but maybe they would have been more popular in the United States if they hadn't worn those stupid hats.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z6dxQVhE8o

"Right Now"- Van Halen. This has to be one of the best music videos ever! We also all remember this song being used on the short lived Crystal Pepsi commercials in 1993. This song was Van Halen's last big hit as a band and was included on their 1992 album "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" (do the acronym on that one). Rightfully so, this video won the 1992 VMA for Video of the Year. The coolest fact about this song is that Sammy Hagar and Eddie Van Halen were working two separate songs at the time, but each heard each other's song and decided to combine them because "they were working on the same song". Van Halen would only release one more album with Sammy Hagar (1995's "Balance"), before fading into obscurity with only one more album released in the next 10 years. I guess they were just planning for "Right Now".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkxB6PqQsoY

"Right Where You Want Me"- Jesse McCartney. I hate to admit that is actually a good song. What a dork!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ncqa7iifD8

BONUS VIDEOS- "You Spin Me Round"- Dead or Alive. Like a Record, baby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUatnbaNfEo

"Right Here Waiting For You". Monica featuring 112. Great cover song here from her 1997 album "The Boy Is Mine".

Late Night Music Part 97..........."Old School Slow Jams"

The last few weeks, I have really had my radio dial stuck on 107.5 FM WKXI here in Jackson. In my entire life, only 3 radio stations (other than public broadcasting) have been the same here. One of them is soft soul KXI 107. While driving home last night, I decided it was time to have a list honoring some of the songs they play every day.

In order to qualify for this list, the song had to be released before I was born, because seriously, if it was released during my lifetime, it really can't be "old school". For only the fourth time ever, all songs receiving votes in this category were included.

"Sideshow"- Blue Magic. Of all the songs on this list, this has always been my favorite to sing along to for some reason. Also, for the longest time, I really thought this song was by the Stylistics. Unfortunately, Blue Magic only really made it into the spotlight with this lone hit from 1974 which peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is a pretty good live "performance" from "Soul Train" (on a side note, did Don Cornelius ever expect us to think that they were really singing?). Bonus points for Ted "Wizard" Mills robot dance to open the song. This song also gets bonus points for being painfully ironic as Blue Magic was never more than a "sideshow".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TscxLlhMiig

"Break Up To Make Up"- Stylistics. Unfortunately for Blue Magic, there was a just a little bit more popular group also from Philadelphia that was around at the same time as they were. The Stylistics had 5 top 10 hits, including this one from 1973 which peaked at #5 off of their album "Rockin Roll Baby". Some might get upset for me including this one knowing some of Stylistics hits, but this one was always my favorite one to sing along to. Sorry about the video too, some user made video that makes no sense, but it was the best audio quality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRV3pDOvX7M

"Have You Seen Her?"- The Chi-Lites. The Chi-Lites were briefly on top of the music world in 1971 and 1972 with two top 5 hits including "Oh Girl" going to #1 worldwide. The previous year, they also reached the top 5 with this song that peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 (that I always laugh was "covered" by MC Hammer). This song was included on their 1971 hit album "(For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People". Even in 1971, this song was considered at "throwback" song just because of the doo-wop style and narration which, at the time, was very reminiscent of the 1950's. Oh well, bonus points for the song being covered by MC Hammer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVYxKRXDT2I

"Everybody Plays The Fool"- The Main Ingredient. If you ever wondered by actor Cuba Gooding had the "Jr." after his name, you have to remember that his father, Cuba Gooding, Sr. was the lead singer of the moderately successful group The Main Ingredient. The group had three top 40 hits, but they are best known for this song that went to #3 in 1972 from their album "Bitter Sweet". Here is another "Soul Train" "live" performance, but I'm gonna throw in some bonus points for Don Cornelius's hair on this one. That guy had it going on way before Don King did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNQ0GkGN3yM

"The Makings Of You"- Curtis Mayfield. Oh man! I'm so glad I found a spot for Curtis Mayfield on here. I've always been fascinated by Curtis Mayfield not only because of his amazing voice and music, but the mere fact that he recorded his last album in the studio lying on his back as a quadriplegic. He was also a very very underrated guitar player and I think you can include him as one of the best ever. Curtis Mayfield was probably best known for his song "People Get Ready" he recorded as a member of The Impressions, but his solo music is just so soulful and complex, it's obvious that he was a true music genius. This song was included on his 1970 debut solo album "Curtis", and was surprisingly never released as a single, but has remained a fan favorite, and was later covered by Lauryn Hill (I smell a bonus video). The success of his debut solo single "Move On Up" kinda overshadowed this one. Man, I could listen to Curtis Mayfield all night.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UViLoH-yORw

"Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)"- The Temptations. In 1971, the Temptations were fading, and honestly, I think they knew it. This song from their 1971 album "Sky's The Limit", is notable because it was the last single featuring Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. What a great swan song. Shortly after this album, the Temptations drastically changed both their lineup and their sound, and never really regained their fame which made them one of the top acts in the world in 1960's. This video was also actually their last performance together from the January 31, 1971 edition of "The Ed Sullivan Show". This is notable for being one of Paul Williams last time on camera.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB3i9z2pDvc

"Never Can Say Goodbye"- The Jackson 5. You know I had to include J5! Yes, I know they had more popular songs that I could easily put here, but this one like "Break Up To Make Up" has always been my favorite J5 song to sing along to. Not gonna lie, I've caught myself dancing to this one several times. In 1970, the Jackson Five had pretty much taken over the Temptation's spot atop the soul music stage with their smash album "Third Album", so in 1971, their next album "Maybe Tomorrow" was super anticipated and produced this song which went to #2 on the charts. (I gotta say the title track from this album is probably my favorite Jackson 5 song- just can't find a good video of it).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K76kGhxHnvk

"All Up To You"- Con Funk Shun. Most people remember Con Funk Shun as what exactly what their name says, a funk group, but this ballad snuck it's way onto their 1980 album "Spirit", and has always been a favorite of mine. However, this song was never released as a single, as they opted for another good ballad "By Your Side" to be released instead. For a group that was known for making people across the country dance, this song has put me to sleep more times than I can count.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmIRDYEpnk0

"Used Ta Be My Girl"- O'Jays. Ok, I included this one just to eat more crow on being stupid enough to know that Eddie Levert wasn't the lead singer of the O'Jays despite seeing pictures of him 100 times- I still never put it together. This song was actually the O'Jays last hit peaking at #4 in 1978 from their album "So Full Of Love", and was also their first and only hit after the death of group member William Powell, who had been replaced by Sammy Strain. Pretty good live performance here- shows the guys can still move a little bit. However, someone please get Eddie Levert a towel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp9-y62V3kk

"Let's Stay Together"- Al Green. I haven't had this video on here in a while, but I think this one speaks for itself. The craziest part is that Al Green is now 64 and is way cooler than I will ever be. He might be the smoothest singer ever, even more so than Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, and Sam Cooke, and I'm so serious when I say that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVzYxqG9N1c

"A Song For You"- Donny Hathaway. I've always said that Donny Hathaway was one of the most underrated singers ever, and I think this is the track that always made me think that. This song has been covered numerous times with some pretty good versions, but this one has always been the best to me. Donny Hathaway just had an angelic voice. This song from his self titled 1971 album actually never charted, but has always been one of my favorite songs ever. Donny Hathaway never had alot of commercial success, but his fanbase has always been one of the most loyal in the world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeHiio1sTTI

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine"- Marvin Gaye. We all know the song, just never knew Marvin Gaye played the piano until I saw this video- thousands of bonus points right there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyA_DNw2vyg

BONUS VIDEO- "The Makings Of You"- Lauryn Hill. This amazing cover couldn't have been done by a better artist or with a better effort.....wow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeErfwlIgPg

"A Song For You"- Ray Charles. I always thought he also did a great version of the song that actually went unheralded and unnoticed since it wasn't released until late in his career. Great live performance here from 1999.

Late Night Music I Really Can't Sleep Edition Part 96........."Goodnight"

Ok, I once again can't sleep. This is becoming a theme now huh? Well, in an ironic twist of blogging lore, my "goodnight" version of "Late Night Music" will be written on one of the nights I've had the most trouble sleeping. It's currently 3:30am, and I'd be willing to bet I'm not asleep until 6:00am at the earliest. For heaven's sake, all I wanna do is tell myself goodnight! Anyway, this entry has been one of my favorite in recent memory just due to the amount of new bands I came across- really had a lot of fun with this one.

Obviously, in order to receive votes in this category, the song had to feature the words "Goodnight". Also receiving votes in this category were "Goodnight, Travel Well" by the Killers, "Goodnight Lullaby" by Amber Rhodes, "Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite" by The Spaniels (received bonus points for it's use in the movie "Three Men And A Baby" but damn why does it have to be so annoying?), and "Goodnight and Go" by Imogen Heap.

"Goodbye, Goodnight"- Mae. This song right here off of Mae's debut album "Destination: Beautiful" has meant so much to me and was a constant in my CD player on the way to work in Clarksville all the time. Something about this song just gets me so hyped up! I actually got into Mae while they were touring with Sherwood (speaking of them- I really need to get them back on here VERY soon!) in 2007. Mae is from Norfolk, VA and is actually an acronym for "Multi-Sensory Aestethic Experience". "Destination:Beautiful" was released in 2003 on Tooth and Nail Records, I guess that makes Mae a Christian band, even though they didn't really know it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDP6XydBBYc

"Goodnight"- The Beatles. This song closes out the 1968 masterpiece "The Beatles" also known as "The White Album". The song is a super rare recording for the Beatles for two very distinct reasons. First of all, it is one of only 9 songs that Ringo Starr sings lead vocals on. Also, it is one of very few songs that the Beatles have (I can't remember the exact number) that only ONE of the group members actually appear on. Other than Ringo's lead vocal, none of the tracks on the song were recorded by any member of the group. The song was actually written by John Lennon in early 1968 as a lullaby for his son Julian.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIKugx1sToY

"Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)"- Billy Joel. In 1993, Billy Joel released his last pop studio album "River Of Dreams", which was much more serious than anything he'd ever written. If you listen to Billy Joel over the years, you'll see that's he's usually super sarcastic. However, this song for his daughter Alexa Ray, is about as serious as Joel ever got in his songs. It was released as a single in 1993, but only peaked at #77 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was pretty ironic in that it was the last pop single Joel released before his cover (COVER SONG ALERT) of Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" in 1997. By that time, Christie Brinkley had filed for divorce, and his status as a true baller had been revoked. Oh well, he was cool once upon a time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcnd55tLCv8

"Goodnight Tonight"- Wings. Paul McCartney really isn't appearing twice on this list because not only is this a whole different band, he, like we said before, doesn't even appear on the Beatles recording before, so I'm counting this one. In 1979, Wings were close to ending and actually released their final album "Back To The Egg" that year. I always laugh about that one because that album was supposed to "mark a new era" for the band. Woops. Anyway, this song was actually originally intended to be included on that album, but instead was released as a stand alone single which peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Paul McCartney does a great job of blending disco and flamenco guitar playing on this song. I guess he really wanted to experiment with different kinds of music around that time. Like most of his solo/Wings videos, this one also seems to be pretty strange. What in the world is Linda McCartney doing? Bonus points for Paul playing the bongas while his face is right by them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRCgueckAXE

"Tell Me Goodnight"- The Hot Lies. The Hot Lies are one of those rare bands that only released ONE full length album. This song, however was taken from their second EP "Heart Attacks and Callous Acts" in 2005. This video is really strange, and for some reason, I feel like I'm watching "The Shining" when they are running through the maze- remember that scene? I'd have to say though, that once I saw this video and heard this song, there was no doubt in my mind that The Hot Lies were from Australia.

"Good Night"- Nell. Ok, I have no idea what they are saying either, but Nell is one of the biggest acts in South Korea and this song was included on their 2006 worldwide smash album "Healing Process" and was voted one of the five best album releases in South Korea of that year. Nell has also been called "an Asian version of Radiohead". I don't see it. I have to admit this is a pretty cool song, just wish I knew the words.

"Goodnight Goodnight"- Maroon 5. Adam Levine is just so freaking awesome it's almost not fair. That guy just OWNS a microphone. Also, I'd really like to see Adam Levine try his hand at acting- I really think he'd be a fantastic lead role in a drama or even romantic comedy. This song was included as the last single released from Maroon 5's smash album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" and included this super cool video. I have to admit though, that this whole video makes me think I'm watching the movie "Sliding Doors"- or is it just me? This might be my favorite Maroon 5 song.

"Good Morning and Good Night"- Maggie McClure. Sometimes, while writing this blog I find new artists that just capture the imagination and then you wind up not being able to get enough of them. I've discovered some of my favorite artists ever through this blog and now I've discovered another artist I am instantly hooked on. Maggie McClure is from Norman, Oklahoma and this is the title track from her latest album. You know the Jonas Brothers have a song by the exact same name, and I think this one is 20000X better. Maggie McClure really reminds in a way of Sara Bareilles and also reminds me a little of Colbie Caillat, and to top it off, she looks like (at least to me) Sara McLachlan in the face. I absolutely freaking love this song! Check out Maggie McClure at www.maggiemcclure.com I think I'm gonna be buying some of her songs on iTunes here in about 5 minutes.

"Goodnight Moon"- Go Radio. Another up and coming band I've just gotten into. Go Radio is from Tallahassee, Florida. This song is from their second EP "Do Overs and Second Chances". I like this song, but if you didn't know this band was from Florida, you'd hear Jason Lancaster sing and think he was foreign- listen for yourself and tell me if I'm lying.
