Late Night Music Halloween Edition Part 74........"Here Come Those Tears Again"

Not just because of Halloween, but I decided to write about the human emotions of crying this time. Not just because we love scaring little kids at Halloween and see them cry, but I thought about something the late Jim Valvano once said in his speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards when he talked about how to really experience life. He said that you should "have your emotions moved to tears, whether it be joy or sadness". In addition to deep thought and laughing, Jimmy V said that those 3 emotions in your life every day will lead you have a happy joyous life. I've always wondered about that, and I can see how someone dying of cancer, as he was at the time, could say that and truly believe it. Remember, tears aren't always a bad thing, as they are simply our body and soul's way of releasing emotion when we can't hold it in anymore.

In order to be considered for this list, the SONG TITLE had to feature the word "Tear" at some point and be referring to crying, not breaking something. Also receiving votes in this category were "Tears Don't Fall" by Bullet For My Valentine, "Diamonds For Tears" by Poets Of The Fall, "Tears Are Falling" by Kiss, "Tears" by The Isley Brothers, and "Tears In The Rain" by Jennifer Rush. NOT RECEIVING VOTES was "Tears of Joy" by Rick Ross. Sorry, that song sucks.

"Here Come Those Tears Again"- Jackson Browne. Jackson Browne is a forgotten singer of the 70's, and he is now the first artist I've ever used twice for blog titles "And we'll fill in the missing colors in each other's paint by number dreams" and now this one. While he was already moderately popular, Jackson Browne shot to the mainstream spotlight in 1976 with his album "The Pretender". I was always perplexed that the album only had 8 songs, but yet was still widely popular. This album was extremely personal, as it was recorded and released shortly after the suicide of his first wife. This song here was actually co-written by her mother, Nancy Farnsworth shortly after her death. Really good live version here. Bonus points for the piano player looking like Kenny Rogers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzNo7Ol4zTA

"Fistful Of Tears"- Maxwell. Early this year, Maxwell released the final single from his stellar album "BLACKSummer's Night", "Fistful Of Tears". Like most of the album, and the previously featured "Pretty Wings", this immensely personal song is about bad timing and heartbreak. The song begins almost sarcastically by him thanking the person for breaking up with him by saying "how can I repay you?". However, there is so much pain in this song, all he feels he has to offer is a fistful of tears. Great mood on this video with the black and white with just Maxwell and a microphone. One of the coolest men in music......period.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KabCkV_oW48

"Tears In Heaven"- Eric Clapton. Eric Clapton wrote this song after the tragic death of his son Conor who feel from a 53 story window in New York City. While he was known for his rock and roll and blues guitar riffs, this song takes a new look into the soul of Clapton, as it was very different from any of his other songs. The song was also featured for the soundtrack of the 1991 movie "Rush", which featured Eric Clapton exclusively as the only songwriter for the album. While Eric Clapton gave several memorable performance of this song, including his famous "Unplugged" album and his DVD he filmed in Madison Square Garden, Clapton stated in 2004 that he will no longer play the song or his other "memorial song" "My Father's Eyes" live because he has "moved on from the pain".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxPj3GAYYZ0

"Teardrops On My Guitar"- Taylor Swift. I don't know how she managed to sneak her way on here again, but she did. I really like this song, and I have to admit I was always impressed that a high school kid could sing a catchy tune but still write such deep lyrics and actually have a pretty meaningful video but at the same time appeal to her age bracket. You gotta give her props, she is definitely talented.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKCek6_dB0M

"Each Tear"- Mary J. Blige feat. Jay Sean. YES! Another Mary J. Blige video! This was the third single off of her 2009 album "Stronger With Each Tear", and was pushed hard in international releases by featuring duet versions for all the international versions with stars from that region. This video here is the British version with Jay Sean. They have pretty good chemistry, and like I've said 100 times, Mary J. Blige is a perfect example of a woman who has gotten more elegant as she gets older. I love how inspirational her music can be for so many people. This video and song are definitely inspirational. I think I'm gonna listen to this CD next time I'm in the car.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xvash3C5G9c

"Tears Of A Clown"- Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. In 1967, Barry Gordy and Motown were looking for hit single for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles because Smokey Robinson had grown tired of the group and wanted to break out on his own after the release of their album "Make It Happen". While the song was included on that album, it was not released as a single until Motown's British offices released it as a single in 1969 because of the high demand for a new Miracles single. After it quickly shot to the top of the charts, Motown released the single in the United States in 1970 where it reinvented the Miracles and kept them together until 1972 when Smokey Robinson finally went solo. Pretty good live version here, but maybe it was a sign of things to come because we see no closeups of the group, and don't even a good shot of their faces, with all the focus being on Smokey.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2kxlZDOHeQ

"So Many Tears"- 2pac. I've always liked 2pac, but I have to admit I had never heard this song until today. This single was released off of "Me Against The World" in 1995. During the filming of this video, all file footage of 2pac was used for the making of the video due to Tupac being in prison at the time. Probably his saddest song- pretty good foreshadowing about his life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbs7wWLXLpw

"Tracks Of My Tears"- Boyz II Men. In order to avoid featuring the same group twice, I featured the 2007 cover of Smokey Robinson and The Miracles hit that was recorded by Boyz II Men for their Motown tribute album "Motown: Hitsville USA". I still have trouble getting used to them as a trio, because who is singing the bass part? Also, while they are always one of the best groups ever, they really need to stop dancing and just focus on singing. Shawn is ok, but Nathan and Wanya need to stop. I also learned recently that Boyz II Men is one of the VERY RARE groups in music that functions with no agent and they represent themselves and have always trusted each other handling finances. That's amazing that they have stood by each other all this time with all the pulls of greed in the music business- that's real friendship.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnDnqEdjPNM

"Lonesome Tears"- Beck. Beck has always been a strange cat. He was known in the 1990's for his strange lyrics and musical instrument experimentation, as he himself plays several of the instruments on each track. However, with his 2002 album "Sea Change", Beck stuck with simpler lyrics and music and drastically changed his sound, but having been called by several publications the "Best Album Of the 00's". It is said that Beck was so moved by French singer Serge Gainsbourg's album "History de Melody Nelson", that he decided to make a concept album based on how much it influenced him. I love how Beck can change his sound but still have creative videos that seem like the same person in so many ways. Bonus points for using all white in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWe6bMVvTzk

"Black Tears"- Hands On Approach feat. Ana Free. Portuguese band Hands On Approach used fellow Portugal native and internet sensation Ana Free and her 21 million youtube views to contribute to the lead single from their latest album "High And Above". These guys really remind me of a cross between Maroon 5 and of The Rocket Summer. For some reason, the girl in the bathtub creeps me out and reminds me of creepy scenes from "Dexter" and of course "Saw"- maybe because it's close to Halloween.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3WzDp-1ZwE

"Tears Are Not Enough"- Northern Lights. Wow, I found a way to get this on here for a third time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJN3u1wAWIk

"Down To My Last Teardrop"- Tanya Tucker. Just for you country fans- man she was one awesome cougar! What was Glen Campbell thinking?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YplH9jhwNHA

BONUS VIDEO- "Somebody's Watching Me"- Rockwell. Just for Halloween.

Late Night Music Part 73............"Alone"

I've spent this entire day alone and I have to say I can't say it's a bad thing. While I did have to suffer through the Saints game, I got lots of rest, watched "Undercover Boss" and "Dexter", and had time to write this entry. It's really interesting to see how artists use "alone" as being a good thing, but sometimes a bad thing. Being solitary can have different effects on different people, no matter who they are. This list takes a look at some of those songs about being alone.

In order to be considered for this list, the SONG TITLE had to have the word "Alone" in it. Also receiving votes in this category were "Alone" by Bullet For My Valentine,"Well Enough Alone" by Chevelle, "Walk Alone" by ilse, "Oildale (Leave Me Alone)" by Korn, "Hope Rides Alone" by The Protomen, and "Leave Me Alone" by Tech N9ne.

"Alone"- Heart. Funny how I talked about recently that I had kept Heart off of here for so long. Well here they are again with probably their best known song from their 1987 album "Bad Animals" which was the follow up to their 1985 self-titled comeback album. "Alone" quickly shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. I love this video because I love the Wilson sisters- why can women rock that hard and still be that hot? I'm sure you know this song was later covered in 2007 by Celine Dion. Yeah, it won't make it on here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cw1ng75KP0

"I Alone"- Live. I still talk about how awesome it was seeing these guys in 2004 at Jubilee Jam in Jackson with Lassiter and Jay Money. This song from their 1994 smash album "Throwing Copper" is a great song, but adds fuel to the fire of me thinking that Live is really a British band posing as a band from San Francisco. Ed Kowalczyk just looks, sounds, and acts British. To top it off, he has ridiculous hair. Bonus points for his farmer tan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNrQOUtXYOo

"Alone"- Swish. Once again, an up and coming artist that I know personally has made his way on to "Late Night Music". Swish has taken his show on the road from Mississippi to Europe, Jamaica, and here in this video in Los Angeles. If there is any doubt to this artist's determination, he was willing to film in the rain- and we all know about how I feel about being in the rain (hence me staying home with tickets to LSU/Tennessee game because it was raining). I've always thought Swish was a phenomenal rapper, genius arranger/sampler and a solid lyricist, however, you will never catch me trying to defend his dancing, but bonus points for trying. All joking aside, I haven't heard many rap artists be able to use so many instruments so skillfully to lay down a really good track, and I'd challenge anyone to show me anyone else who does it as much. Be sure to check out his new EP "Invincible" now available on ITunes. Check him out at http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/invincible-ep/id397805736. I really wish he had a video for his track "Switch It Up" because it's always been my favorite.

http://vimeo.com/15661125

"Never Alone"- Lady Antebellum and Jim Brickman. I always get cracked up looking at Jim Brickman. The guy is a great piano player, he just looks like he doesn't give a crap and is there to hang out. I really like Hillary Scott's hair curly rather than straight, but man her voice sounds like an angel! Also, check out any other Jim Brickman video and they all look like this- why does the guy want to always be the same? Oh yeah, this is all you're getting tonight country fans.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsdlgrnjphg

"You Are Not Alone"- Michael Jackson. I had to include his performance from the 1995 VMAs. I can't watch the official video without wanting to peel out my retinas with an apple peeler.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO82sxXBQkM

"About Being Alone"- Josef Hedinger. Here is a guy I stumbled across while making this list. Josef Hedinger is a young singer/songwriter from Fort Smith, Arkansas, who has been in Europe and actually signed to a European label. However, this is a really good song and he has a lot of soul in his voice, and almost sounds like a real R/B singer, but can someone please get this guy a haircut and a new wardrobe? I could actually see this guy being cool if he could change his look. I guess it works in Europe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4W-t4M2gDI

"Leave The Memories Alone"- Fuel. In 2007, Fuel ran off lead singer Brett Scallions and tried to recruit Chris Daughtry to become their new lead singer. Thankfully, Chris Daughtry never took them up on that offer, but Fuel settled with Toryn Green for their 2007 album "Angels and Devils". This song "Leave The Memories Alone" is from that album and gives a small taste of the slightly different sound and less complexity of their material from the album. The album bombed after debuting at #42 despite selling 15,000 copies in its first week, and is widely regarded one of the bands worst albums. Fuel hasn't released an album since, but has reunited with original lead singer Brett Scallions in hopes of "re-fueling" for another album. This isn't a bad song, but it simply just isn't as good as Scallions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze4NhsXiTao

"Can't Leave 'Em Alone"- Ciara featuring 50 Cent. All Ciara ever has to do to get a video on my list is freaking make one. Good grief she is without a doubt one of the sexiest women in music. This song was the last single from her 2007 album "Ciara: The Evolution". I usually think 50 Cent is a complete idiot, but I have to say I really wish I could be him in this video. Negative points for being in Atlanta and wearing hats for the Nationals and Dodgers- that looks so stupid when rappers do that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnL9Ju7oSvU

"Never Alone"- BarlowGirl. More hot rocker chicks! BarlowGirl is a Christian rock group from Illinois that had a huge hit with this song from their 2004 self-titled debut album. These are 3 beautiful sisters. This video was shot to promote the song for mainstream radio in 2006, but this plan was later scrapped. However, this video is powerful on several levels.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr5kLntOi2k

"Not Alone"- Linkin Park. From one powerful video to another. In 2010, Linkin Park contributed to the compilation album "Download to Donate to Haiti" with this single and video. Like much of their 2010 album "A Thousand Suns", Linkin Park's sound has drastically changed as the band has left behind its alternative metal/metalcore rap for a more rock, and alot softer sound. Great song here- I'll be curious to see if LP includes it on their next album. Unreal video here- can't watch it without getting chills.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vLvGvZ4Tus

"You're Not Alone"- Boyz II Men. Most people forget about Boyz II Men's 1993 Christmas album "Christmas Interpretations" which actually preceded the release of "II". Even though it was shortly after the release of their debut album "Cooleyhighharmony" it was obvious that their sound was already maturing, as made evident with this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38iWnTLHM3E

"We're All Alone"- Boz Scaggs. I can't tell you much about this video other than the fact that's its probably in Japan (where Scaggs is still huge) and it's a pretty good live performance. If anyone here can actually translate the Japanese on the video, you get a gold star! I always like calling Boz Scaggs a "One Album Wonder" because while he had a long productive career, it's hard to argue that he is known in most circles outside of his smash 1976 album "Silk Degrees" (peaked at #2 on the Billboard Charts) which included this song, which also went to the Top 10 with a cover version by Rita Coolidge the following year. Also, according to Scaggs, Michael Jackson recorded the song but never recorded it. Without a doubt Boz Scaggs best song, and it helped him keep his 15 minutes of fame in the United States. Just something about Boz Scaggs' voice is hilarious. I can't put my finger on it, but he's another nominee for a "singer you think is British but really isn't".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jELdHlPj58

"Leave Me Alone (I'm Lonely)"- Pink. And to think that just a few months ago I saying how much Pink sucks. It's amazing how much an artist can bend my ears if they are hot. This song from Pink's 2006 album "I'm Not Dead" is actually a pretty personal look at Pink's feelings on her much publicized break up with Carey Hart. Pretty good live performance from Wembley Arena from her 2007 Live DVD "I'm Not Dead".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCPGqw2xhao

"You're Not Alone"- Meredith Andrews. I realize she's super cheesy, but this is a really good song. Meredith Andrews is also very beautiful.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FXLo3aCkuQ

"Never Leave Me Alone"- Nate Dogg and Snoop Dogg.I was always kinda fascinated by Nate Dogg. He always struck me as the guy in the posse who had some sense- kinda like when I met 3 6 Mafia and they were all idiots except the DJ- they always bring along the guy who can save them from looking like complete morons. His style has always been kinda cool to me too, singing on a rap track with that distinctive voice- why didn't this guy make it bigger? Also, I'm not buying him as a criminal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzveEPBVQtA

BONUS VIDEO- "Regulate"- Nate Dogg and Warren G. From 1994 film "Above the Rim". This was my favorite song in 6th grade.

Late Night Music Part 72........."Blinded By The Light"

I realized yesterday that while I definitely did an entry featuring all songs with "dark" in the title, I never did "light". Do I want to be known as the guy who is all doom and gloom? I don't think so. Bonus points right off the bat to Nelly Furtado for being the only artist to appear on both lists.

In order to receive votes in this category, the SONG TITLE had to have the word "Light" in it somewhere (even if it is in parenthes like this- it's still part of the official song title). Also receiving votes in this category were "Put Your Lights On" by Santana featuring Everlast, "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf, "The Light" by Common, and "Keep The Lights On" by The Wave Machines. NOT RECEIVING VOTES were "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by Reba McEntire or "Light Up" by Drake- sorry I just can't do it. Also, "Turn Off The Lights" by Teddy Pendergrass was disqualified just due to the fact of the mental pictures it creates.

"Blinded By The Light"- Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Ok, I admit, this song had a little bit to do with inspiring this list. However, I still have no idea what they are saying. Manfred Mann used the Kurt Cobain theory "if I make people try to figure out for a really long time what I'm singing, my song will stay on the charts longer" that worked so well for Nirvana and "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Really seemed to work- I mean I've put him on my list twice now and still don't have a clue what he's saying. I didn't focus on it last time, but the outfits of the band in this video are beyond ridiculous. First off, Manfred Mann looks like an out of work house painter who lost his wig and borrowed Fuzzy Zoeller's glasses. The drummer looks like Daniel-San from "The Karate Kid"- that or a guy who escaped from the hospital in the middle of the night. The guitar player is wearing a half of a El Matador outfit and has a haircut that would even make a gay guy say "what the hell". The keyboardist just needs to strip naked because he'd sadly look better- seriously, who goes on national TV with a half too small tank top that's purple to push your #1 song? FAIL!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcWVL4B-4pI

"Light My Fire"- The Doors. Surprisingly, not only is the The Doors first appearance on "Late Night Music", I have to admit that I have never been a super big fan of theirs. Maybe it's because Jim Morrison creeps me out, the guy was mad talented, but he really had a way of making me think he was a serial killer. In 1967, The Doors released their debut album with this as their second single and their first #1 single. I have, however, always been fascinated how The Doors are probably the only successful rock band in history to not have a bass player. It's simply drums, guitar, and keyboards- quite a rare combination. I guess that's part of the reason they stood out so much. I have to also add that the keyboard solo (featured here on the longer album version rather than the single version) by Ray Manzarek is pretty sick. The guitar solo by Robby Krieger afterwards is pretty sick itself. Great song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flOvM4Z355A

"Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)"- Billy Joel. Man, this will shock alot of people, but if I'm not mistaken, this is Billy Joel's first appearance also (ok, scratch that, I just remembered that it isn't-whew). He was always my mom's favorite singer- hands down. This guy's pure musicianship and piano playing/writing ability is almost unmatched. Billy Joel just brings a swagger to the piano that really only Elton John can match on a consistent basis. This song, from his 1976 album "Turnstiles" is really weird in a way, because it's almost like a sci-fi song. The song, obviously by the title, is written from the perspective of a guy in the city of Miami in the year 2017 after having witnessed the destruction of New York City and attending an unauthorized concert in Brooklyn on the city's last night of existence. I always thought this song was weird because Billy Joel is writing about his hometown. Interesting concept, but strange nonetheless. Something else about Billy Joel I really like is how loyal he is to his band and how loyal they are to him (but come to think of it, how awesome would it be to be in his band?). He has had basically the same band since 1991 with very few changes. This concert is from 2006 from a show in Tokyo, Japan and features that entire band (with the main exception being his longtime drummer Liberty Devitto).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPpKfnNkDB0

"Red Light Special"- TLC. I freaking love Chili- wow, Usher was stupid to cheat on her. She goes on the long list of celebrity wives who get cheated on by stupid boyfriends/husbands. Wow! What a woman! Anyway, in 1994, TLC had released "Crazy Sexy Cool" and reached elite status, and went on to sell over 10 million copies. After the success of their ode to extramarital affairs hit "Creep", they released this song that seriously put the "sexy" in "Crazy Sexy Cool", and went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. I am gonna go ahead and call this the most explicit TLC song ever. Yeah, easy one. Bonus points for Boris Kodjoe in the video as a male prostitute- little did he know playing that role would lead to him playing a secret agent on "Undercovers".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP2t9LBeAwo

"Lights and Sounds"- Yellowcard. First off, bonus points to Yellowcard for having two songs possible for this list (also "Light Up The Sky"), but since it was featured on "Up, Up, And Away", it was disqualified. This title track from their 2006 follow up album to smash album "Ocean Avenue", shows just a small glimpse of how much their sound changed from album to album. "Ocean Avenue" is one of my favorite albums by any band ever, but like most Yellowcard fans, I was disappointed in this effort, despite this song being a decent listen and a pretty good video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FS8nG8SZEI

"Turn Your Lights Down Low"- Bob Marley and the Wailers. YES! One of my favorite songs ever! Off of his signature album, 1977's "Exodus", Bob Marley recorded most of this album in London while recuperating from the attempt on his life in 1976 that injured him and his family. This song's meaning has been disagreed upon, but is actually about an affair Bob Marley had with a woman in Jamaica and how he would sneak in her window. Despite it's background, this song remains one of the best love songs ever written.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kK8CwubWzQ

"In The House of Stone and Light"- Martin Page. Wow, another song from "They Said WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?". Like I said last time, it seriously sounds like Martin Page says "I will lop a poop in my eye" at 2:51 of the video. Look for yourself and see. This was another song that was played to death in the United Kingdom during our trip there in 1995, and wound up being an international hit for Martin Page that wound up peaking at #14. Despite numerous questions, no one really knows what this song is about, and no one knows what he's really saying anyway. Despite this song being his one brush with singing fame, he actually co-wrote hits like "These Dreams" by Heart and "We Built This City On Rock And Roll" by Starship. That should tell you enough.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIa9UEXd98Q

"Half Light"- Athlete. Athlete is a band from Deptford, England, and this song was featured on their second album, "Tourist". This song was ironically used heavily to promote the final episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in the United Kingdom. I don't know why either- good question. Lead singer Joel Pott curiously looks just like Michael Ian Black who was from "Ed" fame as Phil Stubbs. Yeah, I know most of you never watched "Ed" or it would still be in the air- still my favorite show ever. I really like this song, but this video is really confusing- they are in a desert dressed in jackets and abunch of animals run by- and that portrays a "half light" how? By the way, no animals were harmed in the making of this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aB-y38hJfTU

"Hold Up A Light"- Take That. Most people forget that Take That was the British equivalent of Backstreet Boys, and while they never had alot of American success, they were known everywhere else in the world, and for a little while in the 1990's, you could make a case that Take That was the biggest boy band in the world if you didn't count the United States. Ok, I have no idea why you'd make that case either- but it's just another random fact. Also, much like the Backstreet Boys, Take That also had a very long hiatus before coming back together in 2006 and later releasing 2008's "The Circus", with this song being the final single from the album. I actually saw Take That member Robbie Williams while he was on his solo career perform the song "Feel" live on the "Tonight Show" on the night Katie Couric hosted. Speaking of that..........DO NOT MISS TONIGHT'S BONUS VIDEO!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4-lzW_EZmU

"Go Light Your World"- Kathy Troccoli. Kathy Trocolli is one of the few artists who actually started out in mainstream music with the hit "Everything Changes" before moving to Christian music with this 1995 hit that also became a mainstream hit. I like how she's a really good singer, but looks nothing like a singer- beautiful woman though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6L36MC9yB8

"Green Light"- John Legend featuring Andre 3000. I love how John Legend got away from his normal sound with this song from his slow jam styles in "Get Lifted" and "Once Again". His lead single from his album "Evolver" showed that he can be a hip hop artist as well. I love how this video almost turns into an Outkast video featuring John Legend rather than the other way around, that's really funny actually. Can't figure out why Estelle makes a cameo in this video either. Bonus points for the "morning after" scene at the end.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-AbEO6J8s0

"Dance Into The Light"- Phil Collins. I always thought this song and album was kind of a slap in the face to Genesis because Collins left Genesis for good in 1995 and became a full time solo artist. You leave a group you were with for years and you release a song called this? Call me crazy, but it almost sounds like he's glad to be free- but hey, maybe I'm wrong. This video hurts my eyes, but not as much as Phil Collins trying to act cool with his incredibly bad bald head.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZnD6HqCKZI

"Light Up The Sky"- The Afters. The Afters have been one of Christian rock's biggest bands for the last few years, and have had a great crossover presence with this title track from their latest album that was released last month, also its lead single being featured on MTV's "The Hills". The Afters have always reminded me of a cross between Lifehouse and Mae- just the sound and passion and tone of their songs because like both bands, you can draw your own meaning for their songs despite the song's origin. This video is different for the fact it's the first time I've ever used a non-official "drama" video, as I usually only use live performances, official videos, or just a picture with sounds. This depiction of this song in this video is very moving. Great interpretation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3Q-R4esGf4

"Turn Off The Light"- Nelly Furtado. Sorry, I was distracted by the mud wrestling. I keep forgetting Nelly Furtado is Canadian- she just screams "Crazy Mexican" to me even though she was born to parents who were Canadian immigrants from the African island nation Azores. This song is kinda catchy, as was her entire 2001 debut album "Whoa, Nelly!" despite the album name being probably the worst ever. Bonus points for the sampling of "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.

"Ray Of Light"- Madonna. As I've mentioned before, in 1998, Madonna ended her "whore" phase with her smash album "Ray of Light". Not only did she finally look as sexy as she really is, she had some awesome music to go along with it, as well as this killer video which took home that year's VMA for Video Of The Year. Must be the time lapse, and I'm gonna go ahead and give bonus points for it, that's just super cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGdMojE3_YU

"Red Light"- David Nail. Just for you country fans. Not a bad song, I just think he's a country boy who wants to be a pop singer. His voice just has too much soul to be a country singer. He actually reminds me alot of Pat Monahan of Train, which recorded his first single, the title track from his debut album- weird. This song from his debut album "I'm About To Come Alive" was also Nail's first Top 10 hit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXdIcgueM4U

"Dim All The Lights"- Donna Summer. I'm not even gonna waste my time telling you the story behind this song. She does it for me here in this great 1999 live performance. Still one of the most underrated female singers ever and one of the best from the disco era.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukwp-bBpVrI

"Lights"- Journey. In 1977, Steve Perry joined Journey and brought them into the mainstream spotlight with their first album together "Infinity". This song, about their hometown of San Francisco, is thought to be the first song of many that Steve Perry wrote for Journey. If you didn't know this, you would watch this video and think that Journey was a British band- just has that feel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4QkTvK2OEw

"When The Lights Go Out"- Five. Yep, I went there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5UuAborP0k

BONUS VIDEO- I TOLD YOU YOU DIDN'T WANT TO MISS IT!

"Feel"- Robbie Williams. As I stated before, in 2003, NBC did a special "switch" where Jay Leno hosted "The Today Show" for Katie Couric in New York and she hosted "The Tonight Show" for him in Los Angeles. My mother and I happened to be in the audience the night she hosted (yeah I know the one dang time Jay doesn't host and we happened to be there- talk about crazy). We waited in line for something like 5 hours and were on the 3rd row. If you look closely, you can see me pointing with a red long sleeved shirt at the 1:44 mark. Those stupid girls going crazy actually camped out all night to see him do one dang song. Sorry, I don't like anyone that much. I am literally 2 feet from him when he sits in the girls lap. Also, when he went on stage, it may have been the hardest I've ever laughed in my entire life. I thought I was going to hyperventilate. Great moment. Bonus points for me being in the video.

He definitely gave me one of the funniest moments of my life

Late Night Music Part 71.........."Always"

Few things in life are there for ALWAYS. It's a simple word, but a powerful term in the same. Think about it- how many things in life are there always? While it's a simple word, we see in music how a simple word like "always" can make some great music. There is not a song on tonight's list that isn't a deep lyrical work of art.

In order to be considered for this category, the SONG TITLE had to include the word "always". Also receiving votes in this category was "Always" by Saliva, "Something's Always Wrong" by Toad the Wet Sprocket, "Always On Time" by Ja Rule and Ashanti, and "Always" by Trina ft. Monica. "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston will NOT appear on this list- seriously do I have to explain why?

"Always"- Bon Jovi. In 1995, we took a family vacation to the United Kingdom for spring break. The entire way there and back on the airplane, I listened to this song seemingly 100 times, and it kinda stuck with me ever since. As evident from his previous album, "Keep The Faith", Jon Bon Jovi was going for a more pop/mature sound and was moving away from his heavy metal days. In 1994, this was even more evident on his album "Cross Road", and this lead single became his best selling single to date. I didn't know this, but this song was originally written for the 1993 film "Romeo Is Bleeding" starring Gary Oldman, but after Bon Jovi saw the movie, he thought it sucked so bad he wouldn't let his song be in it- that's pretty bad. I've never seen the movie, but I'll take his word for it. To top it off, infinite bonus points for Keri Russell and Carla Gugino in this video. Keri Russell is super hot in her own right, but MAN I've always had a thing for Carla Gugino! I loved her on "Spin City" and think she is STILL sexy 15 years later.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BMwcO6_hyA

"Always"- Blink 182. Blink 182 were on top of the punk world with their self-titled album which featured the songs "I Miss You" and "I'm Feeling This", which was featured on the Madden 2003 soundtrack. However, to put icing on the cake, they released this song in 2004. Personally, I was just glad they finally let Tom Delonge sing- Mark Hoppus had been bogarting the microphone for a while. This is one of Blink's better songs, and is actually pretty deep if you listen to the lyrics. I love this video also- probably their best, just not the funniest. Bonus points for Sophie Monk.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvtJVku_mJw

"Always And Forever"- Luther Vandross. Like this one wasn't gonna be on here. Most people forget that this song was actually a cover (COVER SONG ALERT!) that was first made famous by the funk group Heatwave in 1976, but was covered by Luther Vandross in 1994 for his album "Songs". I think Luther Vandross could cover Megadeath and make it sound good. That guy was incredible. Just never understood why he sweated so much. I hear this song and just wanna flap my wings like an angel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm4wAmsGyN0

"Always Be My Baby"- Mariah Carey. In 1995, Mariah Carey had established herself as one of the sexiest women in the history of music, a status she still holds to this day. Behind the scenes, she was feuding with her then husband/manager/record executive Tommy Mottola who wanted her music to stay "middle of the road" despite Mariah Carey wanting to venture into the hip-hop scene. While, it was a slow transition, the release of "Daydream" began that transition, and is still one of Mariah's best albums. In March 1996, she released "Always Be My Baby", and created the everlasting image of her swinging from that tire swing and into my heart. This song was actually co-written by Jermaine Dupri, and HAS to be the softest image song he's ever written. In 1997, Carey and Mottola divorced, adding himself to the long list of idiots who let beautiful women get away.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfRNRymrv9k

"Always"- Building 429. I have to admit, that while I follow the genre, Building 429 gets forgotten in the discussion about really good Christian bands alot. They remind me alot of Rascal Flatts, and to a certain extent, Sister Hazel. I don't know, just the vibe I get from them. This song, from their 2008 self-titled album, is one of the most powerful songs recorded in recent Christian music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6LTfueFPpM

"Always You"- Charice. I have to admit, when she appeared as Sunshine Corazon on the season premiere of "Glee" I had to giggle a little bit. You have to admit that Charice Pempengco looks like the typical stereotypical Asian nerdy girl, but man that girl can sing! Between her and Nina, I wanna know what they put in the water in the Philippines! I think as she gets older, she will get more beautiful as she still has the "little girl" qualities, but her voice is beautiful enough for me! This song written for her mother gives me chills......wow I had to stop writing for a second. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her on "Glee".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc-Z8WHdBCU

"She Always Gets What She Wants"- Prime Circle. Prime Circle is a band from Pretoria, South Africa. This is a good song, and a good video, but doesn't lead singer Ross Learmoth look like the lead singer from Smashmouth? His voice also, to me, sounds like the lead singer of Everclear.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNHbWqtLY40

"Why Does It Always Rain On Me?"- Travis. Travis is a band from Scotland who hit it big with this song in 1999 about a trip to Israel in which it rained the entire time. Bonus points for singing with tape on the guy's mouth- that's dedication. Then, I'm gonna take those points away for the dead goat scene- that's pretty messed up. After watching this whole video, I'm almost tempted to take it off after the dude's ridiculously stupid hair and his stupid kilt. I know it's Scotland, but at least look like you aren't trying to freak us out.....for all of us.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwh3FmpZ7kg

"Always Remember Me"- Ry Cuming. Why do I keep discovering these foreign acts after I do an entry on their country? Ry Cuming is a new artist from Australia that has an incredible 5 o'clock shadow that would make even Derek Sheppard jealous. This is a great video- it actually makes me want to go to Australia even more. Is it just me, or does he look alot like Jude Law? Also, even though she doesn't appear in the video (obviously) Sara Bareilles sings background vocals on this song. Bonus points for that. Also, bonus points for being an awesome guitar player and not appearing playing one in the video- super cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQSU5nn76hM

"I Love You Always Forever"- Donna Lewis. I always felt weird for thinking she was so hot. I think part of it is that she is from Wales, and after visiting there (during the aforementioned trip in 1995), I just can't bring myself to actually think that a woman from Wales could actually be attractive. Great song though- I love how she rocks her fake blonde hair. On second thought, forget I said anything.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqdWTeXWvOg

"Always On Your Side"- Sheryl Crow and Sting. One of my favorite duets ever! I wish this song would have been more popular, because this is a song I would definitely love to do karaoke sometime VERY soon. Sheryl Crow is a perfect example of a woman who gets more beautiful with age, as she is looking super sexy in this video- still one of my all time favorites. I like Sting and all, but why does he seem to have a duet partner in order to have a hit anymore? Maybe breaking up the police wasn't such a great idea after all. I do kinda hate that this song wasn't as big as "Picture" just due to the fact that Sting is a more talented than Kid Rock. This song actually hit #2 in Canada, but debuted at a lackluster #35 in the United States. To add insult to injury, the album version on 2005's "Wildflower" features only Sheryl Crow. It wasn't until the after the song was nominated for a 2007 Grammy that the duet version was put on the album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FseuxxcTlvA

"Always Be My Baby"- Sara Evans. Just for you country fans, and because Sara Evans is a first class cougar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vIzbK29Etw

"Always On My Mind"- Elvis Presley. Did you really think I'd leave off the King? This song written for Priscilla is one of Elvis's best ever. Willie Nelson also had a good version of this song, but his shaking bottom jaw was too hypnotizing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za8cpM6cGYk

BONUS VIDEOS-

"Now And Forever"- Richard Marx. No reason, I just like this song, maybe I wanted to include another cool 5 o'clock shadow. Richard Marx always had a cool one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glJmzxNmtn8

"Almost Lover"- A Fine Frenzy. I put this one because I wanted to put this one on here but then realized the title wasn't "Always Lover", but hey, it's a great song. Bonus points for A Fine Frenzy having one of the coolest stage names in music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsWsasqIoyk

I'd love to see that face as I daydream
sure, I'll take a picture with you and record a single, but there's no way you'll be on the album!
you be the judge

Late Night Music Part 70........"Dinner Time"

I was really hungry tonight and actually thought of this topic while I went down stairs to get some food out of the pantry at around 1:30am. It's amazing where influence comes from sometimes. Oh well, anything in the name of journalism, right?

In order to be considered in this category, the SONG TITLE had to feature an actual food or beverage that was actually used in that context. This would disqualify "Rasberry Beret" by Prince and "Glass Onion" by the Beatles. Also receiving votes in this category were "Tequila Sunrise" by the Eagles, "American Pie" by Don McLean, "Lemon" by U2, "I Just Don't Want Coffee" by Caedmon's Call, "The Moon, Merlot, and Me" by Mason Douglas, and "Two Pina Coladas" by Garth Brooks.

"God Of Wine"- Third Eye Blind. What better band to lead off this list than one of my absolute favorites! This song closed out their debut album in 1997, and does so in a magical fashion, as this song shows their true greatness as a band. I have to be honest, while I love this song, I am totally confused at what the meaning of this song is. Stephan Jenkins has said that it's written from a "cellular perspective when cells give way" it doesn't help me. Yeah, I'm lost bud. However, I am impressed that he actually has a great live performance here without sounding hoarse- something I always joke about with him. Former guitarist Tony Fredianelli looks awesome playing the guitar here, but it just isn't the same without original guitarist Kevin Cadogan. I don't care what anyone says, Third Eye Blind is just not the same band without him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXf8pQVQdUU

"Chicken Fried"- Zac Brown Band. In 2008, the Zac Brown Band burst onto the scene with this hit song which helped propel them to the Best New Artist Grammy in 2010. From their album "The Foundation", this song talks about the band beginnings in Georgia. I love this video's portrayal of the band as a simple bunch of country boys, something which has been missing from country music for a while. This song is a strong candidate to be sung by me in my next karaoke performance, whenever that actually gets to take place. Zac Brown actually wrote and began performing this song in 2000, but added the last verse after Sept. 11, and then considered the song finally "finished".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4ujS1er1r0

"Cheeseburger In Paradise"- Jimmy Buffett. Always great to feature a great Mississippian on "Late Night Music". Long before his "get drunk and get thrown out of NBA basketball game days" Jimmy Buffett was still a cool quasi singer with a beach persona, but still made some good country music. His 1978 album "Son of a Son of a Sailor" not only continued this persona, but it also spawned this crowd favorite as evidenced by this video here. The story behind this song is hilarious. Buffett was on a sailing trip in the British Virgin Islands and had been living off of canned foods and peanut butter for a few days. He got so hungry he began to crave a cheeseburger. He was shocked to find that in Road Town, Tortola, BVI, that there was actually a restaurant that served "American Cheeseburgers" and Buffett obviously ate and ordered one. While he admitted that the burger sucked, he said it was like "manna from Heaven" because his vision had come true.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBsPZV14I-k

"Chai Tea Latte"- Angel Taylor. Up and coming artists Angel Taylor performs this great song from her debut album "Love Travels". Her sooth voice and deep lyrics remind me a lot of Colbie Caillat. This song is obviously about an interracial relationship that is falling apart. I like this song and I like all of her music (and I have a feeling that she will soon be a household name due to her being pushed very hard by VH1's "you oughta know" feature.......and by me on my freaking facebook wall- seriously?), but I can't understand why she has her eyes covered here. Bonus points for playing the piano without looking, I guess.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QjgcfPzi2s

"Mexican Wine"- Fountains of Wayne. Fountains of Wayne followed up their hit single "Stacy's Mom" from their 2003 album "Welcome Interstate Managers" with this just as silly song and video, which was kind of strange because if you listen to the rest of the album, it has a much more serious tone- and this could have been the reason that the band did not become bigger because I think alot of people viewed them as a spoof band to a certain extent, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, despite the attempted star power draw of Drew Carey in this video, the song failed to catch on, and Fountains of Wayne will forever be known as a one hit wonder band. Bonus points for that yacht.....and those women!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4blhM9IU3A

"Poundcake"- Van Halen. After David Lee Roth left Van Halen in a lurch, they hired Sammy Hagar and became what was perceived "soft" by many loyal fans. So, in 1991, Van Halen released For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge just to try to get censored and try to seem more "edgy". I'll let you figure out the acronym on that one. The album was actually conceived by Hagar's long time friend and famed boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. The album went on to spawn VH's biggest hit post Roth "Right Now"- remember that one from the Pepsi Clear commercials? That one really worked out. Anyway, great performance here from the 1991 VMAs. Bonus points for Arsenio Hall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFUVmLVqRzc

"Tea And Sympathy"- Jars of Clay. Jars of Clay released their sophomore album "Much Afraid" in 1997, and were determined to disprove the fact that they were considered by most people in Christian and mainstream music that they were nothing more than a "garage band". While the true fans saw how deep their lyrics were,"Much Afraid" features songs like this, and was "less heavy" in many regards. This song is all about miscommunication between people and how harsh words can ruin a relationship, and how hard it is to fix it once it is broken. I would have liked to have seen this song released as a single.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFu06nKynQ4

"Champagne High"- Sister Hazel. Wow, probably my favorite song on this list. What an incredible song. I remember when Sister Hazel premiered this song live on "Rick Dees and the Weekly Top 40" (yes I was a dork that would listen to the whole countdown on the weekends) to promote their upcoming album "Fortress", and I was instantly blown away. As lead singer Ken Block said and obviously shows, the song is about a man showing up at his old lover's wedding and not expecting to feel anything, but feeling regret in the way their relationship went as the ceremony takes place. I'm gonna go ahead and nominate him though for the "lead singer who looks most like a character from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series" award though. What do you think? Bonus points for Stuart Scott- I'm gonna go ahead and make that the "most random moment in music video history". I definitely never saw that one coming.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oLcDhIWxuY

"Water Runs Dry"- Boyz II Men. Great song here from their 1994 album "II". I remember seeing this song performed live with a piano instead of guitar. Was different, but definitely cool. Also, I was never impressed with the woman in this video. Boyz II Men usually had really good looking women in their videos, but I'm not too knocked out with this one. Boyz II Men to me has always made really cool videos, I don't think they get enough credit for that. Even late into their careers and recently they have made some pretty complex and interesting videos, including my personal favorite "The Color of Love". I guess it isn't quite a lost art just yet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N9opF-PK5k

"Straight Tequila Night"- John Anderson. Watch the video and laugh. Then laugh knowing that I've seen John Anderson in concert..........twice. While this song and video are quite funny, 1992's album "Seminole Wind" marked John Anderson's comeback, as he went a whole 9 years between #1 singles- something that even in country music circles is unheard of.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyGU4nzhirI

"Chocolate High"- Musiq Soulchild and India Arie. Yes! I love this song! I know I featured this one as a bonus video in "Girl Power!", but I can't get over what a great onscreen duo India Arie and Musiq make- I really wish they could have made their relationship work out just for more songs like this. This song was featured on India's 2009 album "Testimony: Vol. 2; Love and Politics".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F8R-vBB4O4

"Strawberry Wine"- Deana Carter. Be honest- none of us care about this song. Deana Carter was the hottest woman in country music when this song came out and was until a woman named Carrie Underwood came along. Anyway, I always laughed because some guy out there thinks he's such a bad ass because he is the real guy that this song is about. Must be tough.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Up06CryWQpE

"Banana Pancakes"- Jack Johnson. Jack's album "In Between Dreams" is one of my favorite albums. Actually, this song has never been really one of my favorite JJ songs just because of the rest of the album being so good, but this is still a good song nonetheless. I guess I would like this song a little bit better if I actually tried banana pancakes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Graa_Vm5eA

"Sex and Candy"- Marcy Playground. I'm not even gonna say anything- just watch the video and figure it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDAXltfj8-Y

"Vanilla Twilight"- Owl City. Wow, I keep finding ways to put electro/synthpop acts on here. Does that tell us something? I'm also gonna nominate Owl City as the "artist who looks most like the gay weird guy in "The Wedding Crashers"", and also throw in Shaq being in this video as the new "most random moment in music video history". but a funny one. Great song here, I really like his songwriting and his diversity even in his genre- I'm really looking forward to his second album. Also, please note that I am referring to "him" because Owl City is not a band, it is the stage name of Adam Young- please get it straight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIz2K3ArrWk

"Candy"- Cameo. YIKES! My eyes hurt! Make it stop! PLEASE! This has got to be the stupidest worst most horrible video I've ever had on here. How can a song be so good but be so ridiculous when you get behind a camera? Is that a thong he's wearing? And MAN THESE GUYS CANNOT DANCE! Larry Blackmon should be ashamed of himself and crawl in a hole and never come back after being filmed in this video. I almost feel like he was drugged and this video is blackmail material. I wish I could find a decent video of the closing scene in "The Best Man" where they all electric slide to this song at the wedding. Much more beautiful people dancing in that one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn8KYD1Vco0

"30,000 Pound of Bananas"- Harry Chapin. Please take the time and listen to this entire song with all the alternate endings and Harry's explanation of each one. Not only is it hilarious, it shows Harry Chapin's true gift of a "storyteller", as he claimed to be. This song, featured on his album "Verities and Balderdash" remained a crowd favorite until his death and also, believe it or not, is based on a true story of a banana truck wreck in Scranton, PA in 1965. Here's the picture- http://whizzo.blogspot.com/2006/07/harry-chapins-30000-pounds-of-bananas.html

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODMye94wMfk

BONUS VIDEOS- "Sherry Fraser"- Marcy Playground. Definitely their best song and also from their self-titled album- I had no idea this song even had a video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJhL3VOOatA

"Tea and Sympathy"- Janis Ian. Just because I didn't want to include two songs with the same title. Great live performance here from the song from her 1976 hit album "Between The Lines".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9-EMi87--Y

Angel Taylor
I'm sorry, that guy looks like a pirate
the biggest loser of the emergence of Carrie Underwood

Late Night Music Part 69........."Calendar Songs"

With my birthday coming up in less than a month, I started thinking about the calendar and how many great songs feature references to the calendar whether it be a certain event or just a reflection of time, the calendar is a popular writing inspiration. Just another thing we take for granted that is there every day but is still just another simple inspiration.

In order to be considered for this list, the SONG TITLE has to feature a SPECIFIC month (not the band). This would disqualify The February Heartache, Blue October, Until June, and Dead By April. The song had to also be referring to that month, for example, "Wish I May" by Breaking Benjamin, "March On" by Good Charlotte, or "August Town" by Duane Stephenson (even thought that is a freaking awesome song) would also be disqualified. Also receiving votes in this category were "January" by Pilot, "January February" by Barbara Dickson, "January Twenty Something" by WHY?,"July" by Natty, "July" by Katatonia, and "October" by U2". NOT RECEIVING VOTES was "July" by Drake. I'm sorry guys, I just can't bring myself to put him on a list, he sucks SO much.

"January Wedding"- The Avett Brothers. These folk singing brothers from North Carolina make the folk music debut for "Late Night Music" with this great live performance from their 2009 hit album "I and Love and You". Probably the biggest folk rock group in the world, their latest album "I and Love and You" peaked at #16 on the Billboard Top 200 albums. For the record, the Asian guy in the video isn't their brother, he's band member Joe Kwon. I am gonna go ahead and nominate the Avett Brothers for the most disinterested looking band in the history of music. Seth Avett could use some help!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iq4DsqiW2DI

"February Air"- Lights. Wow, another Canadian artist that I had no idea was Canadian. For some reason, I keep finding synth pop artists to feature on here. Is that genre just becoming that big and we aren't realizing it? (Note- Lights recently ended a tour with Owl City) Whether or not this genre is growing or not, this video, from her 2008 self-titled EP is super cool. First of all, what is that cool toy she has? It almost looks like a "Simon"- remember those? I am also a tad bit confused because the theme of the video is supposed to be futuristic, but yet she has props for the video from the 1970's. Bonus points for the Wonder Woman head band. I'm gonna go ahead and go on record as putting Lights in the "possible future Mrs. Pigott" club.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLbIyqQ2hp0

"February Song"- Josh Groban. First of all, I had no idea Josh Groban even played the piano- I thought he was just a "microphone" kinda guy. In 2006, Josh followed up his mega album "Closer" with "Awake" , with this being the second single, and if you've ever listened to Josh Groban, you can tell his style not only changed, but it evolved. While I like his previous stuff, it almost felt like a choral concert, while this song sounds more like a soft jazz, piano soft rock song with Groban actually using his falsetto head voice, which was very uncommon in Groban's earlier songs. I'm actually really looking forward to Josh's next studio album "Illuminations", because I think his sound will continue to change. However, his look, unfortunately, won't be going anywhere. Oh yeah, I have no idea what this song is about- he has a good way of doing that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzk09LOxszc

"February Stars"- Foo Fighters. Absolutely great live performance here from the song from the Foo Fighters' second album "The Colour and The Shape". While this song was never released as a single, it was actually recorded by Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic in 1994 during Nirvana's last recording session and was originally intended to be a Nirvana song. Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are incredible, and this song is no different. Does anyone else think that drummer Taylor Hawkins looks just like WWE Superstar Edge? Also, while this song is powerful, please try to look at Pat Smear and try not to laugh- I can't do it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZG7PqE7Sds

"April Showers"- Dru Hill. I always like this song from Dru Hill's 1996 album mainly because it let "guy in the background" James Green aka "Woody Rock" sing the entire lead vocal (even though he wrote nearly all of the band's early songs including "5 steps"- and yet he only sings one verse on that one). I always liked Woody because he was a good mellow singer and wasn't flamboyant like the headline catching Sisqo. I actually think the fact that Green lacked the showmanship of Sisqo actually contributed to none of his songs being released as a single. Think about it, every Dru Hill song that was released on mainstream featured Sisqo. While they were all good songs, let's make no mistake about what the record producers wanted. It sucks that a good R&B song like this one can't be featured in the mainstream. Still my favorite Dru song ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXpNF8yr9I4

"In April"- Wonderwall. Man! I keep finding these artists that fit into genres AFTER the fact. Wonderwall is a German girl group that almost frighteningly reminds me of Taylor Swift and the Dixie Chicks with a splash of Colbie Caillat. This video, which seems very American was for their 2002 debut album "Witchcraft". Will someone please tell me why bands like this record almost exclusively in English and then do nothing to make an American presence, and then don't even have an english fan website? Watch this video, and you'll be asking yourself the same question. Bonus points for the hot chicks covered in water.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKqQ0g1Q2LY

"Seven Days In Sunny June"- Jamiroquai. In most circles, Jamiroquai is considered a one hit wonder band just because of their 1997 hit "Vitural Insanity" and the super cool VMA award winning video that went along with it. After that, most of us never heard from Jamiroquai again. However, they have remained constant across the pond in their home country, and as you can tell, have vastly changed their sound from their funk/acid jazz/techno days to actually featuring acoustic guitars and pianos on this song from their 2005 album "Dynamite". Bonus points for Jay Jay being completely idiotic in this video and making it seem like a 1990's beer commercial.

"Fourth of July"- Soundgarden. In 1994, Soundgarden kept the dying grunge Seattle movement afloat with their super album "Superunknown" which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and established Chris Cornell as one of the best rock band front men in music history. Chris Cornell confused alot of people with this song. While most of his music is profound, it has been rumored that this song was about being on LSD while working at carwash, nuclear war ending the world, or a simple acid trip. Either way, this song really rocks.

"September"- Daughtry. Even artists who suck as bad as Chris Daughtry have good songs from time to time. At least this song wasn't played on the radio at exhaustion. By the time this third single from his latest album "Leave This Town" was released, everyone had figured out that all of Daughtry's songs sound just alike. Is it just me, or does Daughtry seem like Nickelback?

"September"- Earth, Wind, and Fire. Ok, slam dunk here. I really think Maurice White, Phillip Bailey, and Verdine White should go beat the crap out of Daughtry for stealing their song title and making it a song that's not near as cool. This song was rare in that it wasn't included on a single EWF studio album even though it was intended to be included on their 1977 album "I Am", it was released in 1978 as a stand alone single and included on their first Greatest Hits album later that same year. I can't think of another song this big being released that way since Boyz II Men and "End of the Road" in 1993.

"Wake Me Up When September Ends"- Green Day. I had to put this live performance in place of the official video- I can't put you guys through that torture again. Pretty good live performance here, just creepy how much Billy Joe Armstrong really scares me.

"October"- Evanescence. I came across this song as an unreleased Evanescence single. Wow! Amy Lee is amazing on this song. I'd really like to see Evanescence come out with some new material.

"November Rain"- Guns N' Roses. Another repeat song, but has it gotten any less awesome? This is still one of the best rock ballads ever written.

"A Long December"- Counting Crows. I'll say it again, I realize that "Recovering the Satellites" is not near as big as "August and Everything After" but it's an album I've always really enjoyed, including this lead single from that album. I love this song's message about new beginnings, and I REALLY love the addition of Courtney Cox, who was involved with lead singer Adam Duritz at the time, in the video. It just goes to show you that even an ugly crazy looking guy like him can get a girl if he's in a band. I guess there's hope for everyone. Bonus points for the snow in Los Angeles in the video, that would be a meteorological miracle.

"December"- Collective Soul.I realize that yes, this song is super cool, and I realize that Ed Roland is a good lead singer, but this song is a great nominee for my "They Said WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?" list which features songs that you can't understand the lyrics of. I have to admit, I had no idea what most of the lyrics to this song were until I looked them up- then it all made sense that this song is about a break up and then the person trying to crawl back. Despite being hard to understand, Collective Soul and their self-titled album helped usher in the new era of rock music after the death of the Seattle grunge scene in the mid-90's.

BONUS VIDEOS- "September"- Kirk Franklin. What an inspiration. I always listen to this song on September 12th. Bonus points for Maurice White.

"St. Patrick's Day"- John Mayer. Live on "Last Call with Carson Daly". This one was close, but just missed it, but I found a way to put it in here- just for you, Devon.

Late Night Music Part 68........"Pronouns"

I can't think of anything fancy to say here tonight except the fact that I always wondered who "you, I, he, she, me, and we" always were in these songs I hear- who are "they" talking to? It seems that every song is talking about this mysterious person, and it finally drove me over the edge. Anyway, I picked some tonight that go to the next level of personal pronoun usage.

In order to be considered in this category, a song had to have at least two personal pronouns in the song title, this one was tricky, as the official title of the song was the one that was used "Can't Falling In Love With You" by UB40, "Run To You" by Whitney Houston, and other single pronoun songs were disqualified. Also receiving votes in this category were "Just Between You And Me" by Lou Gramm, "The Way You Do The Things You Do" by The Temptations, and "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks.

"You Got Me"- The Roots featuring Erykah Badu. In 1999, The Roots, while already having a steady fan base really broke through with their mega album "Things Fall Apart". Determined to make a huge splash, The Roots took 2 years to make this album, which was their fourth, but their first album ever certified gold. This song went on to win the 2000 Grammy for Best Performance By a Duo or Group. Little known fact about this song is that Eve actually raps on the second verse but does not appear in the video (obviously). I'm super confused by this video, but I do love the fact that Erykah Badu really appeared as herself. So often you see artists change their look a little bit when they are a guest on another artist's album. I really like this song, but man it just seems so sad.

"You And Me"- Lifehouse. If there was an award given for "the person who looks the most like Howie Mandel but isn't Howie Mandel" I would nominate Lifehouse drummer Rick Woolstenhume. Look at him, I'm just saying. I've always liked Lifehouse and I really like lead singer Jason Wade's songwriting ability, with this song being no different, as I've always kept this one in my karaoke back pocket. Unlike the previous video, this one is easy to figure out, and it actually quite good if you ask me, but why in the world is the band just sitting around looking mad while Jason Wade is singing in a few scenes? Weird.

"I Can't Make You Love Me"- Bonnie Raitt. First of all, I had no idea that Bruce Hornsby played the piano on this song. I guess that's good because I never cared to hear him sing. Check out "Great Song, Too Bad The Rest Of Your Songs Suck" for more info on that one. Alot of people don't like this song, but it's a song I would definitely sing karaoke if I wasn't a guy. I refuse to break my "no girl songs" rule. Just not happening. This song, while extremely emotional for Bonnie, was actually written by country/bluegrass songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin as an upbeat country song. They got the idea from a newspaper article about a guy who was on trial for shooting at his girlfriend's car and then told the judge "I learned, your honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't." How inspirational. I always remember this song in the random group of a few songs I heard in exhaustion in Europe during our trip in 1995. For some reason, this song is incredibly big in the United Kingdom. Great live performance here. I can't see how you can't sing this song without emotions running deep through your entire body.

"Give Me You"- Mary J. Blige. True story. One night near my high school graduation I couldn't sleep. Desperate to pass the time, I began flipping through the channels and saw the music video for this song. I was instantly hooked on Mary J. Blige. This album, "Mary", which had also featured the singles "All That I Can Say", "Your Child", and the Elton John tag team "Deep Inside" not only was written by ballad pioneer Dianne Warren, but features Eric Clapton on the guitar. When she recorded this song, Mary had just gotten out of her relationship with K-Ci Hailey (even though he actually appears on the album), and was single at the time. I've never heard a more earnest plea from a woman to be loved. I was also very surprised at the appearance of Michael Jordan in the video being that it wasn't a big budget video. He was in his second retirement at the time, but I have to admit having him was a very nice touch. Great theme to the video by showing that the meaning of the song could be a child needing a father.

"I Run To You"- Lady Antebellum. I really hate I missed these guys in concert at Austin Peay. In 2008, Lady Antebellum exploded onto the Country Music scene with their self-titled debut album with this single being the last single released from the album to lead into their next studio release "Need You Now". These guys seem pretty cool and I really like Hillary Scott as a blonde like she is in the video. There is no doubt about the fact that Lady Antebellum is one of the better country groups out there right now, but can they please make a video that isn't exactly like Nickelback's "Savin' Me"?

"I Belong To You"- Rome. I included this video just to show how bad solo r & b artists can really be. I hate this song. Rome sounds like a cheap version of Keith Sweat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGlQysq474k

"You Belong With Me"- Taylor Swift. I remember driving to work one day and listening to a guy laugh about how stupid it was that Taylor Swift played 2 different girls in the video and really only wearing glasses to look different. I have to say I agree. Is that guy in the video the new blonde headed kid on "Glee"? I like this song, but why do I get the feeling that I'm watching every other "oh my gosh I have to get the guy at the high school prom" movie?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw

"And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going"- Jennifer Hudson. I know I showed this one before, but I think this one is awesome enough to show a few times won't you say? I almost think Jamie Foxx may not have been acting here. He may have been that blown away by the song.

"Me, Myself, and I"- Beyonce. One Word- Beyonce. Bonus points for the backwards video.

"You Can't Always Get What You Want"- The Rolling Stones. I wish I could find a better version/video of this song because the original studio version is quite incredible. Why is Mick Jagger sitting down? I guess his lips got too heavy. At this time of this live performance in 1969, the Stones were riding high with the success of their awesome album "Let It Bleed". Many music critics have compared to this song to the Beatles by calling it "The Rolling Stones version of "Hey Jude"". Not a bad analogy. Also, when Mick talks about "singing the song to Mr. Jimmy" he's not talking about Jimi Hendrix, he's talking about Jimmy Miller, who at the time was the Stones producer and was the lead producer for "Let It Bleed". I still think it's so cool that these guys can stay together for so long after so many years.

"You and Me"- Dave Matthews Band. When the third single for the Dave Matthews Band's album "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King" hit the radio in 2009, Dave Matthews admitted that he wrote the song on his IPhone while on a boat with his family. This is weird because it is the only song on the album that isn't co-written with at least one other band member, which is the norm for Matthews. I thought that Dave Matthews Band had hit a kind of funk, as I was not impressed with their album "Stand Up" in 2005, but I really love this song. This video is probably the band's best also. What a great concept! In a list with stereotypical videos, this one really stands out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD9CrZODlNA

"Just Between You And Me"- DC Talk. DC Talk enjoyed mainstream success when they jumped from the Christian charts with their 1995 album "Jesus Freak", which reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 200, and this single which reached #29 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in 1996 and gave the most popular Christian band ever (despite only releasing 5 studio albums) their biggest mainstream hit, which was capped off with a 1997 Grammy Award. I have to admit, while I've always liked the message DC Talk had throughout their career, I really got sick of this song just due to it being played all the time, and I have to be honest, it was probably my least favorite song on that CD at the time. However, listening to this song now, I really like it.
