Late Night Music Part 30....................."Great Song, Too Bad the Rest of Your Songs Suck!"

We've all done it- say we're going to try to get into an artist just to find out that all their other songs (besides the one we heard on the radio) absolutely suck. Tonight, we pay homage to these kings of suckage in the music world that make us scratch our head and wonder how they got so popular recording crap like that. In order to qualify for this list, you had to NOT be a "one hit wonder" (you had to have at least a few songs that are recognizable in your particular genre). I am sure I'll get some negative feedback on this list, but oh well, sue me.

Also receiving votes in this category was "Why I'm Here" by Oleander, any 1990's R&B knock off groups I forgot to mention here, "Must Be Doing Something Right" by Billy Currington (saved because of the great karaoke quality of the song), and "Ain't I" by Yung LA.

Kanye West- "Can't Tell Me Nothing". Call him whatever you want, you can call him a "mastermind" or a "genius" all you want, but you're still gonna be called a fool by me. Kanye West is overrated and is a complete asshole. I can think of 15 rappers off the top of my head who are better and are better people, and won't make assanine statements about the President of the United States that are completely false like they know what's going on. They also won't completely make a fool out of themselves on the show "Punk'd". (If you ask me, that show really shows a person's true colors). With that being said, Kanye has a diamond in the rough with this song which is also included on "The Hangover" soundtrack, which really adds to the film when the quartet first arrives in Vegas. Good lord I hate Kanye.

Bruce Springsteen- "Glory Days". Another severely overrated singer in my opinion. I HATE watching Johnny Van Zandt in his videos almost as much as I hate listening to Bruce Springsteen sing. His songwriting sucks, he's a terrible singer, and his songs are simple from a musical perspective. However, I love this song as a cover song played by bands, and the video gets THOUSANDS of bonus points for Max Weinberg's hair- if you didn't know that was him, you would have no idea that was him!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vQpW9XRiyM

No Doubt- "New". Another band I have never been really fond of. I think I used to act like I liked them just because the girls I wanted to talk to liked them, but Gwen Stefani comes off as a severely deranged individual, and I can't see how all these guys can call her sexy. What is sexy about her? The fact that she looks trashy and slutty? Oh well, to each his own. However, great song here that was first included on the "Go" soundtrack, and later on their album "Return of Saturn". Still, without a doubt, their best song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtStjGHttGM

Neil Diamond- "Sweet Caroline". Self explanatory- I never got why Irene on "The Real World: Seattle" was so obsessed with him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmV_YJm5jAc

Pink- "Please Don't Leave Me". I think part of me is really attracted to Pink, but at the same time, she's so depressing I find it hard to take her seriously. Her "Behind the Music" that was on VH1 recently, was actually pretty good until it wasted 45 minutes talking about her on and off again boyfriend/husband Carey Hart. She's actually a pretty talented person, but I guess I get sick of her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eocCPDxKq1o

Nickelback- "Saving Me". Guilty pleasure guys, can't help it. However, VERY VERY powerful video. Rest assured, you will never ever hear me say anything else positive about Nickelback. I have never met a single person who met these guys who has said anything positive about them. Worst band in music if you seriously want my opinion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPc-o-4Nsbk

Lyfe Jennings- "Must Be Nice". I wanted to like Lyfe Jennings- seriously. When it was announced he was coming to "Groovin' on the Grounds" at LSU in 2006, I seriously thought it would be great. I love his genre, and I loved this song. However, I have never been more let down on a live performance in my life. His songs are hard to understand, monotonous, and he has NO SOUL at all- he is an embarassment to the neo soul community.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkpN3uiZ-Ew

Ideal- "Get Gone". The ultimate 1990's R&B knock off group. These guys tried to be 112, Boyz II Men, Blackstreet, Dru Hill, Ruff Endz, Jagged Edge, Az Yet, and Shai all rolled into one and it seriously doesn't work. These guys always seemed like they were singing someone else's song. I do like this one though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPCsH6XiZ_I

Savage Garden- "I Knew I Loved You". Why couldn't these Aussies have stayed with more songs like this instead of trying to make ballads out of "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine" (actual song title). I never got what was so catchy about these guys. I realize they are big in their home country, but their overwhelming amount of radio play in the United States has been painful to the ear.

Late Night Music Saints Superbowl Championship Edition Part 29..............."That's What Friends Are For"

Basking in the Saints historic victory, we have to think about how teammates can really win championships together. So many times in music, teammates have recorded together and brought each other to the forefront of music together. Some of the greatest songs ever performed and/or recorded have been by two great artists who combined for a fantastic effort that we will always remember. Duets only on this list. This was a tough one- sorry if I omitted one of your favorites.

Also receiving votes in this category were "Chances Are" by Martina McBride and Bob Seger, "When You Believe" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and all of the boy band "duets". NOT receiving votes in this category was anything by Chris Brown.

Mary J Blige and Andrea Bocelli- "Bridge Over Troubled Water". From this year's grammys with an intro by Wyclef Jean, this Haiti benefit was a true instant classic. While this could have technically been included in our "Odd Couples" category, these two bring the best out of each other so much it had to be included. Not a big fan of Mary's dress or hair on this song, but this is truly a memorable live performance. Andrea Bocelli is incredible- some doubters in the opera scene call him overrated, but I beg to freaking differ.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEEZOOWFb-U

Whitney Houston and CeCe Winans- "Count On Me". for my money, Whitney Houston's best non "Bodyguard" song. This collaboration with cousin CeCe Winans was the exclamation point on the critically acclaimed "Waiting to Exhale" soundtrack. This song marks another great female song written by "songstress" Babyface.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXttyNf8zv0

Luther Vandross and Beyonce- "The Closer I Get To You". Kind of a forgotten one, but this re make of the Donny Hathaway/Roberta Flack classic from 1978. Beyonce started showing her true repertoire on this song. Seriously, is Luther gonna sing with someone who is a scrub? Great video that of course has to feature Beyonce.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4PMSjUbg88

Celine Dion and Clive Griffin- "When I Fall in Love". Ok never been a big Celine Dion fan, as most of you know, but I LOVE this song from "Sleepless in Seattle". Clive Griffin hit pay dirt by riding the coat tails of Celine Dion for his only hit on this song. These two should have made some more duets, because I think their blend is spectacular. Bonus points for the Spanish subtitles on this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlIepnIQxlU

Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle- "A Whole New World". One of my personal favorites and a spectacular duet performed by myself and Holly Haynes Jones in high school, that while good, doesn't match up to this one. However, like always, I chuckle when I see Peabo Bryson's hair- did the guy ever know what decade he was in? I'm glad he's figured it out now that I see him on late night infomercials selling multi-CD collections of R&B love songs. Regina Belle never looks at the camera in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9RFRhRWv4s

Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder- "Ebony and Ivory". This song rode the "anti-racism" movement of songs in the late 70s/early 80s. These two mega stars were a perfect match, however, this song has got to be one of the most repetitive songs ever. Seriously, one verse and one chorus repeated over and over- that's it. You would think with two song writers of this quality they could have come up with more!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZtiJN6yiik

Alicia Keys and Adam Levine- "Wild Horses". Great duo here with the lead singer of Maroon 5 and Miss Alicia Keys from her "Unplugged" album. I love every version of this song ever made. Always been one of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfLmCPfx_gY

Rihanna and Ne-Yo- "I Hate How Much I Love You". Okay song, never really got into Ne-Yo. However, Rihanna is hot- bonus points for her all day long. She's single now guys- take it easy on her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMOOr7GEkj8

Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole- "Unforgettable". Still, for my money, the best duet ever.

I hate it too Rihanna
camera is over here Regina
anything wrong with this picture?

Late Night Music Snow Day/Groundhog Day Edition Part 28................."Baby It's Cold Outside"

Here buried in our winter wonderland in Clarksville, Tennessee, we have to take the time to remember the songs and artists that made us glad to be cold. While most of us won't be at school tomorrow, we can listen to these songs while we watch Punxsutawney Phil look for his shadow and just pray there is no more winter. Seriously, any time it's so cold you don't even want to go to buy groceries, something is wrong. For clarification, all songs in this category had to have something to do with cold in the title or by a band with a cold word in their name and COULD NOT BE A CHRISTMAS SONG. So, find a loved one, grab some hot cocoa, snuggle up, and remember the songs that made us want not want to stay warm.

Crossfade- "Cold". We'll start off with some irony. Can't you just see mother nature singing this song? I didn't mean to be so cold? Hey, it's a thought.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrr3lRLjZ1Y

Coldplay- "Yellow". I always like to think of this song as the song that put Coldplay on the map from their debut album, 2000's "Parachutes". While I think Chris Martin is an extremely ugly human being, his talent is undeniable. This song has been featured in some great TV/movie breakup scenes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAME8GDRTfI

Cold- "Happens All The Time". A rock band that doesn't get enough credit, this is actually a great love song diguised by hard rock. However, a small aside, if your band is called COLD why do you have a video on the beach? Just a thought. Great song here and definitely my favorite Cold song. Their lead singer is a strange looking guy though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz5Bf1aK1ig

Snow Patrol- "Chasing Cars". We all remember this song from "Grey's Anatomy" prom scene from the season 2 season finale, but this powerful song is always a good listen. Again, please notice, a band named SNOW PATROL playing a video barefoot. Can they please at least ACT the part?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrpSjXo6ah0

Red Hot Chili Peppers- "Snow (Hey Oh)". Surprisingly, RHCP is making their debut on "Late Night Music", which is surprising because they have always been one of my favorite bands. Flea's bass line makes this song. The thing I've always liked about them is the licks on their intros and despite their headline status, they seem just like a jam band. I like the way they involve the fans in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuFI5KSPAt4

Snow- "The Informer". Whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D39Lm_HRfOs

Kings of Convenience- "Mrs. Cold". This Norwegian duo is not only making their "Late Night Music" debut, they are more than likely making their debut with most of you. You know how I always say how some bands that are American look foreign (Live)? These guys DEFINITELY look American just because they are so goofy. In an odd way, these guys remind of the Flight of the Conchords. I really think this is a well made video for a not well known band. This song is obviously about a guy too scared to approach a woman, and it's greatly conveyed in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VZLC8YFmj8

Breaking Benjamin- "So Cold". Thanks to our good friend Jay Money, I have gotten more into BB over the last few years, and I've always liked this song. But, this has to be one of the strangest eeriest videos I've seen in recent memory. I always like watching BB videos because while they are a rocking band, their lead singer looks like a preppy sissy boy. I always think he's lip syncing. To make matters worse, he always looks angry when he sings.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXuWJOF9Src

Louis Jordan and Ella Fitzgerald- "Baby It's Cold Outside". Just for good measure I had to include this 1949 classic by two swing big band legends. I think they put it best "baby you'll freeze out there".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkCzGzqikUA

BONUS VIDEOS- The 2006 New Orleans Saints Version of "Fix You" by Coldplay.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4X5C3QOykw

From the Bill Murrary movie- Happy Groundhog Day Everybody.
