Late Night Music Part 119......"I Just Made You Say Underwear"

Like I said, it's really amazing where inspiration comes from. This one just popped in my head for no good reason at all.

In order to receive votes in this category, the SONG TITLE had to have some form of the word "UNDER" in it. Also receiving votes in this category were "Under The Milky Way" by The Church, "Going Under" by Evanescence, and "Over and Under It" by Five Finger Death Punch . NOT RECEIVING VOTES was "Out From Under" by Britney Spears- duh.

"Underneath"- Hanson. Hanson makes my points here. Alot of bubble gum kid groups are mis-managed at young age because their surrounding adults want them to focus on "kid" music. While some of them write their own songs, their creativity is still young, and it is still very curtailed by record companies, parents, and radio stations. I've said 10000 times that if you give Justin Bieber and the Jonas Brothers 4-5 years, you're gonna see some of the best bands in the world because there is no denying talent. Hanson was VERY similar when they came out in 1997 with "Middle Of Nowhere". Their sound was very bubble gum, Taylor and Zac had not reached puberty yet, and their songs were solid, but simple. Fast forward several years to 2004, and this title track from their album of the same name has got to be one of my favorite songs from that year. The making of this album was closely chronicled in the documentary "Strong Enough To Break". I always thought that this song and the album never got enough credit just because so many people weren't used to the new sound Hanson had and still has. This song right here makes me so emotional.

*SIDE NOTE* I really forgot to include Hanson's song from the same album in the last post- here it is "Strong Enough To Break" by Hanson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhIvcjF74mg

"Under You"- Better Than Ezra. Man! BTE's 1999 album "How Does Your Garden Grow?" was their least successful album, but is right up there with "Before The Robots" as their best album. This song from the album has long been debated as the true meaning. Some say it's about lost love, some say it's about witnessing a traumatic loss, and others just say it's about an unreal orgasm. Nonetheless, this is still an unreal song. "How Does Your Garden Grow" proved to be BTE's last major studio album, as they were dropped by Elektra after its release. Despite this, I still think Better Than Ezra is more of an indie type of band anyway, and remain one of the most popular in the gulf south. I've seen these guys live more than any other band with 4 live performances.

"Under The Bridge"- Red Hot Chili Peppers. Fresh off the success of their music video and single "Give It Away" from their 1991 album "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", the Red Hot Chili Peppers released this 1992 single based on Anthony Kiedis's recovery from drugs and how it made him feel lonely and distant from his "former life and friends". This song peaked #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and really catapulted the Chili Peppers into the mainstream in addition to their already strong cult following. This accompanying video received heavy rotation on MTV (when it still had music) and was nominated for 8 VMAs taking home 2.

"Driven Under"- Seether. BONUS POINTS FOR THE REVERSE VIDEO! Why can't American bands ever make videos this cool? I love reverse shot videos- coolest thing ever! This single from South Africa's favorite grunge band's debut album "Disclaimer" reached #13 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. Is it just me, or do I feel like I'm watching the movie "Inception" when I watch this video? Doesn't it seem like those people looking at him are the "subconscious projections" that Leonardo DiCaprio talked about?

"Under Pressure"- Queen and David Bowie. It's not the same! Just ask Vanilla Ice- this bass line and his bass line from "Ice Ice Baby" are NOT the same........yeah, and I'm Chinese. This song from Queen's 1982 album "Hot Space" reached #1 on the British Singles Chart, and was actually David Bowie's first ever collaboration as an artist. Ironically, the song was written in a jam session that started when David Bowie was displeased with the song "Cool Cat", which he was supposed to sing background vocals for and was the reason he was in the studio that day.

"Down Under"- Men At Work. Yes! One of my favorite songs ever! This hilarious video by one of the most eccentric groups ever is one of the best songs of all time. This widely popular song from their major label debut album "Business As Usual" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and cemented Men At Work as one of the most famous Australian bands of all time, and was included in Men At Work's performance at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. According to songwriter and lead singer Colin Hay, the song was in a way a protest of the selling and "over-development" of the country of Australia. I would imagine that this is also the only music video I've ever seen that not only MENTIONS marijuana use, but also depicts it. Wow.

"Under The Cover of Darkness"- The Strokes. Just when you thought the Strokes had disappeared, they broke their 5 year hiatus this year with the release of their newest album "Angles", which peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart with this song serving as the lead single. The Strokes are so freaking cool man. They just seem so effortless in their music, and I've never seen a band look as nonchalant as they do in this video. My only question is Julian Casablancas always trying to look like Joey Ramone or is that something new?

"Under The Same Sun"- The Scorpions. The Scorpions were fresh off their success of their hit single "Wind of Change" and the album and "Face The Heat", when this single was released which was also included on the soundtrack to the Steven Seagal film "On Deadly Ground". Maybe that's why it never had an impact..........

"Under Control"- Parachute. I FREAKING LOVE THIS SONG! This second single by Parachute was released on their debut album "Losing Sleep". I can't see how a guy can't be inspired by this song. Will Anderson, also looks strangely like 30 Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto. Parachute reminds me alot of Sherwood and alot of Josh Kelly for some reason- the music just seems to have that blend. I'd really like to Parachute get bigger- they are a super talented band.

"Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?"- Shania Twain. Good grief Shania is hot. This song doesn't make sense though- no guy would ever be creeping around on her- even if he was gay- I'm just saying. This song was actually Shania's first charting country hit and was the lead single for her 1995 album "The Woman In Me".

"I've Got You Under My Skin"- Frank Sinatra and Bono. Ummmmmmmm.......really? Bono is an awesome lead singer and a very diverse singer- but this one even caught ME off guard. Frank Sinatra is one of the best entertainers to ever walk the face of the earth, but this here is a very poorly done duet in my opinion. This duet was taken from Sinatra's 1993 album "Duets", which featured duet versions of all of Sinatra's old hits. Why do singers do this?

"Underneath Your Clothes"- Shakira. Shakira set herself up with this one. Is she really gonna have this song and then not even talk about what's "underneath" her clothes? Oh yeah, really lame beginning to the video here. Don't you hate when multi-lingual people do that?

BONUS VIDEOS- "Go"- Hanson. From their 2007 album "The Walk". Also their first single every sung by Zac.

"Pinch Me"- Barenaked Ladies- The song that inspired the title.

"Ice Ice Baby"- Vanilla Ice. You be the judge.
