Late Night Music Part 88........"90's Country"

You guys have been begging me to do a country list. I finally broke down and put together what was the best decade of country music ever into a list. I tell ya, despite the unbelievably bad fashion and horrendous haircuts, 1990's country was just better on another level. I see these videos on this list, and then see the mainstream country of today and it's just no question on which is better. I've now done a country list.......so shut up!

Also receiving votes in this category were. "That's The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia" by Reba McEntire, "Walkaway Joe" by Trisha Yearwood, "Soon" by Tanya Tucker, "Little Rock" by Collin Raye, "My Love" by Little Texas, and "Independence Day" by Martina McBride. Not appearing on this list is Shania Twain. I don't care how fine she is- she sucks.

"A Bad Goodbye"- Clint Black and Wynonna Judd. I can't get over how Clint Black's shirts are always perfectly ironed and fit so tight without cutting off his circulation. How does the guy even play the guitar? Also, wearing all black all the time when your name is Black is pretty lame. This song kinda cracks me up because he's singing with one of the most unattractive singers ever and is married to Lisa Hartman. Is it a really a "bad goodbye" to leave Wynonna for Lisa Hartman? Is it just me or does Wynonna's nose look like an eagle beak?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXdlW-eKESw

"I Don't Call Him Daddy"- Doug Supernaw. Before he turned into a criminal nut job, Doug Supernaw found 15 minutes of fame with this #1 Country hit off of his 1993 album "Red Rio Grande". This song is actually a cover of a Kenny Rogers song (COVER SONG ALERT!), which makes him immediately lose bonus points for his only hit being a cover song. Sorry, that's pretty bad. This is such a great song and I love the video. Bonus points for the He-Man underwear.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kz3fAXyuhw

"When She Cries"- Restless Heart. In 1993, these guys headlined a Rapids on the Reservoir summer concert lineup that included Foreigner and .38 Special. No you did not misread that. These guys had quite possibly the best mullets in country music in 1992 and rode this #1 hit all the way to the Billboard Hot 100 #8 spot. However, let me please point out to everyone that any time your lead singer is your drummer, you're not going to be famous very long. Don't tell me "but Genesis" either because Phil Collins moved from behind the drums to the lead spot. The same can be said for the Eagles- besides Don Henley didn't always sing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HXuJVOKU-I

"Meet In The Middle"- Diamond Rio. Diamond Rio burst onto the scene in 1991 with this debut single from their self-titled album. The popularity of the song and video led to the first ever song to reach #1 on the Billboard Country Charts as a debut single from a band. While being very popular, they still looked ridiculous. I know it was 1991, but seriously- would you ever leave your house wearing something like that?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWKpCmPdGmM

"The Cheap Seats"- Alabama. This song brings back many memories of watching the Jackson Generals at Smith Wills Stadium when I was growing up. I can't think of a better baseball song (close second is John Fogerty's "Centerfield") for a minor league baseball game. Released in 1993 on the album of the same name, Alabama was starting to fade in popularity, and this song, despite staying widely popular, was Alabama's first single in *FOURTEEN YEARS* to not reach the top 10. (GOOD GRIEF THAT IS RIDICULOUS!!!!) Despite that, Alabama has always been one of my favorite bands and has to be the most popular country band from the 1980's. I hate that they have had a recent history of lawsuits within the band because I always respected how they had the exact same lineup for their entire existence. I can't think of many bands who did that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VCQDbg7jPk

"Midnight In Montgomery"- Alan Jackson. In 1991, Alan Jackson released his second album "Don't Rock The Jukebox", which produced 5 hit singles including the title track. 4 of those songs went to #1 on the country charts. All except for this one, which peaked at #3. This song, written as a tribute to Hank Williams, has always been a fan favorite and I think really showed the future stardom that awaited Alan Jackson just due to the great songwriting. I remember quite a few girls liking this song growing up, so I memorized the words just to impress them. Don't judge me. Pretty good live version here. Bonus points for the line "I'm so lonesome I could cry" and for the fact that he is visiting the grave in the song on the anniversary of Williams' death, as Hank Williams passed away on New Year's eve.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQboiuonNHw

"You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone"- Brooks and Dunn. I was upset when my dad drug me to a Reba McEntire/Brooks and Dunn concert in Tupelo in 1996. I never cared for either, but it was actually a halfway decent show, much because of this great country ballad by Brooks and Dunn. This #1 single was included on their 1994 album "Waitin' On Sundown". The most interesting fact about this song is that Brooks and Dunn had TWENTY #1 singles on the country charts. Of all of those, Kix Brooks sings ONE. This one. This song is my dedication to all you women out there. Bonus points for Kix Brooks holding the guitar in the video and not playing it. I guess it just makes him look tough.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjENhIdDsic

"Standing Outside The Fire"- Garth Brooks. SUPER Lame video. Great song. It's actually quite hard to find Garth Brooks videos on youtube because of abunch of copyright bullcrap. In 1993, Garth Brooks was one of the most popular acts in the world, so not surprisingly, his album "In Pieces" was a huge success, selling 19 million copies worldwide. Garth reached #3 with this song that to me is one of his best ever. Garth later revealed that he came up with the idea for the title as he was being evacuated from downtown Los Angeles during the 1991 L.A. riots. To hear him tell that story is one of the most powerful accounts of that situation I've ever heard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0kNr8HOCZk

"Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)"- John Michael Montgomery. I'm super pissed that because of copyright issues I cannot find a video for his best song "Hold On To Me" on youtube. That really sucks. However, I'll settle for this one which has always been one of my karaoke favorites. This #1 single off of his self-titled 1994 album really cracks me up with this video because JMM definitely looks like a rodeo cowboy and not a country singer. Bonus points for the old guys he walks in front of and for always playing this song while passing through Grundy County, Tennessee.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mW8TwRDgjRY

"Cross My Heart"- George Strait. This scene from the movie "Pure Country" has been featured in the "Great Song, Horrible Movie" list, so we'll save the movie back story. It is, however, one of the few movies that I know of (the only other being "The Bodyguard") that has a soundtrack at least 100 times more popular than the movie. Funny fact is that the soundtrack was George Strait's best selling album ever and produced this worldwide #1 hit. However, George Strait hasn't made any more movies. Talk about selling your soul to the devil. I have personally heard this song sung at MORE THAN ONE WEDDING. If you are reading this and it was at your wedding, please know that I laughed a little bit on the inside. Nothing against you, but seriously watch the video and tell me you wouldn't laugh either. George Strait just drips with cool though- he's quite possibly the coolest country singer ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY-Z9kdSMXU

"I Like It, I Love It"- Tim McGraw. In 7th grade, you weren't cool if you didn't have Tim McGraw's CD "All I Want", which featured this #1 single. This song actually had a pretty funny video made for it, but for some reason I can't find it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfCHSiYU5vI

"Let Me Let Go"- Faith Hill. Faith Hill led the way for the sound of country music for the last decade, and this song gave a glimpse of 2000's country with this song off of Faith's 1997 album "Faith". In the late 90's Faith Hill was trying awful hard to cross over to mainstream. This included a memorable performance on the 1997 version of "VH1 Divas". This is the first video so far to not feature a mullet or a cowboy hat. Bonus points for that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnO7HC_u2xo

"Just About Right"- Blackhawk. I can't understand why I always loved this song so much. As I've said before, Blackhawk wins the award for "the band trying the hardest to sing really hard and make painful faces while they do it". While they are still around, I think they would have been alot bigger, had lead singer Van Stephenson not tragically passed away after a battle with skin cancer. This song off of their 1994 debut self-titled album was one of reached #7 on the country charts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eauvh5v2ZLU

"Texas Tornado"- Tracy Lawrence. I can't believe I've had this song on here twice now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=673z5uD84UM

"I Wish I Could Have Been There"- John Anderson. John Anderson is an artist I have seen live..........twice. Not only is he a very talented song writer with a very lengthy successful career, he also one of the ugliest human beings alive. You know he'd have to have a great voice and have a great band around him because seriously, just look at the guy. With that being said, this song off of his 1993 album "Solid Ground" was praised as being a country version of "Cats In The Cradle". Also around this time, John Anderson was being praised for resurging his career after nearly a decade of little success in the charts. If you look at the two peaks of his career (early 80's and early 90's), it just goes to show that any artist can come back after a few albums or a few singles that don't quite make it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2USYrYv3EGg

"When Love Finds You"- Vince Gill. I had forgot about this song..........wow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwoAAjaxzmk

BONUS VIDEOS- "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time On You"- Alabama and N'Sync. Just a good cover version of the N' Sync song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6djej1NLk4

"This One's For The Girl"- Martina McBride. Doesn't qualify, but this is without a doubt my #1 country guilty pleasure song ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTowId2CWHA

Garth Brooks
He gets first billing in the group, but he never gets to sing?
Have any of you actually seen this movie?

Late Night Music MLK Edition Part 87......"Kings"

With the MLK Holiday coming up, we are reminded of the late reverend's message of unity, love, and understanding. While we should never forget the power of his message, let us also remember that with the holiday weekend, we should also remember that one of the best tools to help us live with those great qualities is music. So in honor, of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, enjoy tonight's list.

In order to receive votes in this category, the SONG TITLE OR BAND had to have the word "King" in it. Also receiving votes in this category were "King Nothing" by Metallica, "King Rat" by Modest Mouse, "A Farewell To Kings" by Rush, "Boat Behind" by Kings of Convenience, and "King of Kings" by Motorhead,

"Notion"- Kings of Leon. I recently saw an all-access special on Palladia about King of Leon and their background in Nashville as well as their current fame, and I have to admit I was widely entertained. The Followills are freaking hilarious! The funniest they said is that they didn't learn how to play any instruments until after they started writing songs- that's pretty crazy! This song from their smash album "Only By The Night" has always been my favorite and is a pretty cool video to top it off. Everyone knew "Use Somebody" just due to its massive airplay, but this song is still the best on the album to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT6mB8N24_g

"King of New Orleans"- Better Than Ezra. I love any excuse I ever have to put Better Than Ezra on a list, as they've always been one of my favorite bands. After the worldwide success of "Deluxe" in 1993, Better Than Ezra's much anticipated follow up album "Friction, Baby" came out in 1996 with great controversy (see album cover below to see why), but opened up with this great song. This song actually spent a short time on the Billboard Hot 100, but the album, while never as popular as "Deluxe", did produce the crowd/band favorite "Desperately Wanting", which has been used to close every BTE show since. Great live performance here from the House of Blues in New Orleans. I meet people from other pats of the country and I can't really explain how popular Better Than Ezra was and is in Mississippi and Louisiana. This video might give you a small idea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hTSKBsADE8

"King of Anything"- Sara Bareilles. After Sara Bareilles' 2007 breakthrough album "Little Voice" made her a household name, she released "Kaleidoscope Heart" late last year, with this single being released a few months before. I would also like to remind everyone once again that I was a fan of Sara Bareilles' first album "Careful Confessions" before she became a household name- just saying. Anyway, this song is up for the Grammy for Best Female Pop Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards, and with the way this song just shows the evolution of Sara Bareilles as an artist, I'd say she has a good chance to win. This song is a great "I really don't care song" and actually reminds me of alot of people in my life that I sometimes wish weren't there. I'd also like to go on record as saying that Sara Bareilles looks super hot in this video! She gets more beautiful all the time. Bonus points for the brass section on the bus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR7-AUmiNcA

"We'll Be A Dream"- We The Kings featuring Demi Lovato. Ok I've had We The Kings on here before, and yes, they are super goofy, but they are a good band. However, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS DEMI LOVATO DOING IN THIS VIDEO? Either she wants to expand her audience or I was a fan of a junior high band all along and didn't know it. HELP! This song from their album "Smile Kid" is up for a Teen Choice Award as best "Hook Up Video". Why is that even a category. Travis Clark still freaks me out- that hair is HORRIBLE. This video is cool though- bonus points for the many "fights" they depict in it. I have to say the pillow fight would be my personal favorite- just would hate taking a shower or drying off after all the other ones.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMVYT3QvDW8

"Stand By Me"- Ben E. King. This video made for the soundtrack of the 1986 movie of the same name, features stars of the movie Wil Wheaton and the late River Phoenix. Ben E. King just was so cool in the way he sang this song, and unfortunately for him, he was a one hit wonder......kind of. The re-issue of this single in 1987 to go along with the movie also went to #1 26 years later after being a #1 hit in 1961. Ben also had a very successful career with the Drifters before going solo in the early 1960's. He was also very popular in the UK. However, this classic song has been covered by more genres and artists than I can possibly fathom. Just looking at the list is incredible- I could almost do a whole list of just this song! The song, as mentioned before gained great popularity when it was released with the box office hit "Stand By Me" based on Stephen King's short story "The Body". It was one of the most popular films of the 1980's and not only featured a soon to be famous (and soon to be not fat) Jerry O'Connell, it put Ben E. King back in the spotlight over 25 years later.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIq_FtXhCUs

"King Of Magazines"- Danko Jones. This crazy video by Canadian band Danko Jones makes me think I am watching an episode crossed between "Fairly Oddparents" and "Ren and Stimpy" gone horribly wrong. Wow, just wow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxEpJGm-oJg

"King of Sorrow"- Sade. Sade almost broke my rule of having two songs by the same artist on the same list with her other popular song "Your Love Is King", but I went with the one I didn't know as well, but now like alot better. In 2000, Sade "pulled a Maxwell" and released their first new album in 8 years with "Lovers Rock" and led off that album with the great song "By Your Side". The follow up single was this great song and very deep video which shows the true passion in this music. Most people get confused that the lead singer is "Sade", when it is actually the name of the band. While her name IS Sade Adu, she refers to her band as "Sade". While this song is awesome, I'm thinking that she shot this video to explain why Sade goes so long between albums. Let's face it, while they are a cool band, they aren't exactly a new record machine. Is this her way of saying she's too busy and to leave her alone? The band recently went another 10 years between albums with last year's "Soldier Of Love". I guess being in this band is the definition of a part time job. Yes, you read that right, 3 albums in 18 years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nF7yuNg_zWE

"Love King"- The Dream. I have to admit I never really cared for The Dream just because his name and whole persona are just ridiculous. However, this is a good song, and the women popping out from behind him at the video is super cool. After that, this video gets ridiculous, and you all know how I feel about people wearing sunglasses for no reason.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGcQgUnxY14

"The Thrill Is Gone"- B.B. King featuring Tracy Chapman. In 1997, B.B. King released "Deuces Wild", a complete album of duets of him and artists redoing some of his most famous songs. Tracy Chapman and King did this great version of perhaps King's most famous song, and without a doubt his most successful on the charts. Tracy Chapman does a good job here, but it just doesn't get any better than King's original. I love B.B. King not just because he's a fellow Mississippian, but because the guy could rock even at 72 here. Listening to B.B. King play Lucille is something everyone should have to experience in life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVxCtt3s_1M

"Who Would Imagine a King?"- Whitney Houston. Just because I cry watching "The Preacher's Wife". I really wish there was a clip from the movie where they sing this song. My Christmas isn't complete until I watch this movie. Bonus points to anyone who can find one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYGu0dwl4Hk

"When I Fall In Love"- Nat King Cole. Man I tell you, Nat King Cole may have the most smooth and soothing voice in the history of music. I love listening to this guy sing. I really think people need to stop covering this song, because even though Nat King Cole actually covered this song (originally done by Doris Day), this 1956 version is still the best. Nat King Cole is one of the reasons I got into big band/jazz music. I really wonder what his career would have been like had he not died so soon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfAb0gNPy6s

"The Rascal King"- The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I don't get this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NxMlG3M40k

"King of the Mountain"- Midnight Oil. This video is ridiculous. This song from their 1990 album "Blue Sky Mining" was really pushed as a single in the USA (as if you can't tell from this ridiculous video). Not only does no one in the crowd look like they wanna be there, but Peter Garrett looks like the guy in "Men In Black" that has the little dead alien inside him. Maybe if Midnight Oil hadn't tried so hard this song would have done alright- this song is not that bad. It's actually kinda catchy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuC_k51NUqU

"Kings and Queens"- 30 Seconds to Mars. After Jared Leto and 30 Seconds To Mars debuted their lead single from their first album in 4 years "This Is War" in 2009, they made a huge splash by making one of the most popular and most watched videos in internet history. The popularity of the video led to a groundbreaking television performance on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" that some call the best performance in the history of the program. This song sounds completely different than 30 Seconds To Mars last album, and I think we're gonna see them sound different with every album after this one. Like our good friend and Guiness World Record holder David Scherer, I think it's safe to say that Jared Leto could turn most straight men gay. That guy is amazing. Bonus points for the guy riding off after he gets hit by the car.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTMrlHHVx8A

"Sweep The Leg"- No More Kings. All I'm gonna say is that his song from No More Kings 2007 self titled debut album and that the song is written from the perspective of Johnny (played by William Zabka) in "The Karate Kid" (the first one in 1985- not the new stupid one) and his life since being beaten by Daniel Laruso. The video features all of the members of Cobra Kai AND Daniel Laruso. Watch.......and laugh. Bonus points for Richard Haskins- congratulations to him for finding a role that wasn't Mr. Belding.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFlQNtL8F9s

BONUS VIDEOS- "By Your Side"- Sade.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8QJmI_V3j4

"Check Yes Juliet"- We The Kings.

Sara Bareilles
Kings of Leon
See what I mean?

Late Night Music The Ground Is Frozen Outside Edition Part 86........"We Don't Need No Fire Let The Mother Freaker Burn!"

We often consider fire as a great "invention", but wasn't it natural? We found cool ways to create it, but no one "invented" fire. Glad we got that cleared up now. Just due to its own mysterious nature, its also seen as powerful in both a literal and metaphorical sense. So many times fire and its action of burning are used as tools by songwriters to convey their feelings and viewpoints through music. Tonight's list looks at some of those songs. Plus, it's freaking cold outside- let's heat it up!

In order to be considered for this list, the song title had to have something to do with fire or burning. Also receiving votes in this category were "Freewheel Burning" by Judas Priest, "Sex On Fire" by Kings of Leon, "Burning Up" by The Jonas Brothers, "What Is It To Burn?" by Finch. NOT RECEIVING VOTES was "Burn It To The Ground" by Nickelback- do I have to explain why?. Also, I would like everyone to know that I intentionally left off "Burnin' Up" by the Jonas Brothers just because some of you were beginning to worry about me. I also intentionally left off "Light My Fire" by the Doors. I'm sorry, that song just really gets on my nerves.

"Burning Bright"- Shinedown. Shinedown has always been kinda different because this Jacksonville band is borderline redneck. I mean they DID cover a Lynyrd Skynyrd song on their debut album "Leave A Whisper" and then release it as a single. They also have some shades of grunge in them, which makes them a cool combo. With that being said, this has got to be my favorite song by them, as it writes a new definition for the modern power ballad. Those of you really paying attention might notice that this song has been as my status on more than one occasion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIAF1tXFsuc

"Fire Is Low"- Freshlyground. For the last 8 years, Freshlyground has been one of the most popular bands in Africa with what has to be one of the oddest combination of sounds in music, and on top of that they have band members from South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. Even just listening to this song off of their latest album "Radio Africa" just shows how diverse they really are and how universal traditional African music can really be. Lead singer Zolani Mohala has an UNBELIEVABLE voice! Wow what a great song! I can spot 5 types of music in this one. I have a feeling more than one of you is gonna thank me for putting this one on here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nUAarErp5Y

"Burn"- Usher. Wow Usher pulled a rare list streak by appearing on 2 consecutive lists. Anyone with half a brain knows that this song is about Usher's much publicized and controversial break up with Chili from TLC. I still think he's crazy for leaving her, but this is one great song. I have to admit that I was always skeptical of Usher's ability to write serious tone songs like this before this one was released in 2004 on his much anticipated album "Confessions". For traditional R & B fans like myself, this song in my opinion turned over a new leaf for Usher and really showed his maturity as a songwriter. Despite that, his ears are still way too freaking big. I'm also gonna take away massive bonus points on this one for having a female in the video that isn't anywhere near as hot as Chili. He said the song was about her, and then tried to fool us? Stupid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5XNWFw5HVw

"Burn Down The Mission"- Elton John. Man it doesn't get much better than early Elton John! In 1970, Elton John released his second US album "The Tumbleweed Connection", with this song closing out what some call the best EJ album ever. This song is one of the few Bernie Taupin/Elton John compositions that is literally open to interpretation, as neither really revealed the true meaning of the song. While you can obviously use metaphors all day long, the song tells the story of a man going to desperate measures to save his oppressed village and his family. However, in the end, he is unsuccessful- sorry if I ruined it for you. The piano/orchestra interludes show what Elton John had in store for many years to come, as the album (with the exception of the song "Come Down In Time") uses very little advanced instrumentation and musical interludes, and is considered by some to be a country album. When I saw Elton John live in 1997 I remember him playing this song quite well- this will always be one of this best concert songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSm-l3Bo3Cw

"Fire And Rain"- James Taylor. In 1968, James Taylor met a group by the name of the Beatles and became their first ever artist signed to their new label Apple Records. His debut album was wildly successful and produced one of his best known songs "Carolina In My Mind". In 1971, his much anticipated follow up album "Sweet Baby James" included this deeply personal song that reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1968, while recording his first album in England, word got to the producers that James Taylor's dear friend Suzanne had passed away. Afraid that he would be distracted while working, they waited a whole SIX MONTHS before letting him know the news. This song was about that, as well as his battle with drug addiction. I've always thought James Taylor had one of the most soothing voices in music. This song just makes it all more the more evident. Great live version here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-T35WXFOmwI

"Burn"- Tina Arena. Most people now the country version of this song made famous by Jo Dee Messina, but this song was the lead single for Australian mega pop star Tina Arena's 1997 album "In Deep", and was a #1 hit in Australia. I've always thought that Tina Arena could have been way more famous if she had born an American, because this song is just freaking awesome, but you could always kinda tell that this would be a country song at some point. I actually just stopped writing to watch this video and admire the song- very rare. However, after watching this video, I see where Natalie Imbruglia stole her look from.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vgCZYnIbWs

"Burn It Up"- R Kelly. YES! I was able to find a song on "TP.3 Reloaded" that wasn't "Trapped In The Closet". In 2005, R Kelly released what he called the "third installment of his "12 Play" albums" that was simply a 19 track one hour orgasm. This is a pretty good song, but I'm taking away bonus points for the Spanish rapping by Puerto Rican rap group Wisin and Yandel. If the person who sings the song has no idea what the rappers says, the song should automatically be disqualified.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBnU3cJ2hMA

"Ring Of Fire"- Johnny Cash. I know I'd never hear the end of it if it wasn't on here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It7107ELQvY

"We Didn't Start The Fire"- Billy Joel. This song cracks me up, because according to some media outlets, Billy Joel was considered "The Fastest Rapper In The World" after recording this song. Why don't those idiots listen a little closer. I also crack up when this song was used in classrooms to "make students aware of American History". Seriously? Despite those two stupid comments, this song is cool in concept, composition, and lyrics. The video isn't too bad either. I'll also say that in 1989 Billy Joel was still riding his wave of popularity from the 1980's and with the release of "Storm Front" to close out the 80's, he was not only one of the most successful artists, he was also one of the coolest men alive at this point just because he was married to Christie Brinkley. Look at him then and look at him now- losing a woman like that will do a number on you!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTLKWw542g

"Burning Down The House"- The Cardigans and Tom Jones. I wanna give whoever thought of this combo a gold medal for eternal comedy value. I wish I would have known about this song earlier because it would have been included on my "Odd Couples" entry. What a strange duo! However, after listening to the song I can see that having Tom Jones in the song can make Nina Persson sound so much better. Also, COVER SONG ALERT as this song was originally recorded by the Talking Heads in 1983. Does anyone else think that Lady Gaga may have watched this video a few times? Also, you may think I'm crazy, but I always think Nina Persson is Kirsten Dunst in diguise. You be the judge on that one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYuFIrSLD84

"Slow Dancing In A Burning Room"- John Mayer. Same song, new video. This song is just so incredible I feel the need to include several versions of it. This slightly slower version may be better just because John Mayer decided to not sing out the side of his mouth as much on this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJzGtzGydtQ

"Burning Man"- Third Eye Blind. This forgotten song on Third Eye Blind's 1997 debut album (DANG WAS IT SERIOUSLY THAT LONG AGO?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!) was written by Kevin Cadogan and is obviously about a drug addict's battle with sobriety. Cadogan was fired from 3EB in 2000, and those of us who are real fans of the band have always seen this as a turning point. While the band is still fantastic, the songwriting rate of the band slowed to a crawl and it's been dreadfully evident.

"Fire Escape"- Fastball. Surprisingly, this is Fastball's first ever appearance, and like their career, this "one album wonder" really just showed up and left with their 1998 album "All The Pain Money Can Buy". With hits "The Way", "Out Of My Head", and this song here sung and written by Miles Zuniga (I have no idea if he is related to Daphne from "Melrose Place"), which is good because co-frontman Tony Scalzo has one of the most messed up grills I've ever seen. I'm glad we're spared this time from looking at it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jMyjjeSWak

"Burning Out"- Tata Young. Tata Young is probably the most famous artist in Thailand, and is quite possibly the most famous artist right now in Asia. In 2009, Tata released her third English album "Ready For Love". The album was released as a concept album to showcase different R & B styles for Tata to sing to appeal to a wider audience, as the album was a smash hit in Europe and Australia. It's just a matter of time before Tata Young is famous in the United States. Good live performance here from the Bangkok Airport. This woman has some great stage presence.

"Burning Up"- Madonna. This video shows us the days when Madonna legs weren't even on speaking terms because they never saw each other. This single was Madonna's second ever off her 1983 debut album. I always thought Madonna's early stuff was really good, but this video is SO 80's! LOL! That being said, in the lyrics and in this video we saw a sign of things to come, as "Justify My Love" would come along 15 years later. Listen/watch closely, you'll see it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pufec0Hps00

"Disco Inferno"- The Trammps. All I'm gonna say is that I once on VH1 the lead singer Jimmy Ellis called the Trammps the "number 1 disco group of all time". Can't make that up.

BONUS VIDEOS- "Borderline"- Madonna. Always my favorite early Madonna song.

"Doo Be Doo"- Freshlyground. Another great one- I'm hooked on this group.

Late Night Music New Year's Eve Edition Part 85........"It's A New Day"

Wow! What a 365 days! As I get ready to bring in the last day of 2010, I look back at one of the most eventful, confusing, landmarked, and emotional years of my life. In January, I experienced one of the happiest moments of my life when the New Orleans Saints won Super Bowl 44. In March, I walked away from a career path that I thought was the one I was born for. In May, I officiated what may have been my last game ever. The thought of this still haunts me. However, just a few days later, I met some of the best friends I've ever had in my life and started a completely new job that has come to re define the person I am and has become a much needed relief and great bridge to the next step. In July, I lost my grandmother who was 91 years old. In October, I turned 29, and for the first time in years, I had people around me that I actually felt cared about me. This was the first birthday in 4 years I had actually spent with someone besides myself. In November, I celebrated my 10 year reunion from graduating from high school and saw that no matter what you did in high school, people will always appreciate you for who you REALLY are. Along the way, I made some great memories with some great people, and also erased people from my life that I hope I never see again. I also left behind some great people that I wish I could see every day and that I think about every day. All the while, these lists and the music in them was always my release from the stresses of every day life and some of the greatest compliments I've ever received is how much you all enjoy reading them. Not only have I hopefully gotten you into some new music, I've hopefully brought a smile to your face and warmth to your heart that just can't be measured physically. The only goal I've really ever had in life is to make a difference and to affect people's lives, and even with something little I was able to at least make you laugh and hopefully change your day or maybe even more.

With that being said, tonight's list is the rare "serious" list as all songs tonight were put on the list solely due to their strong personal meaning to me over the past year and their lyrics that seemed to basically sum up my life and help me look forward to a new year. At one point or another whether it was happy or sad, all of these songs played a huge part in my life over the last calendar year. I will not be commenting on the videos tonight, as all of these songs speak for themselves. I will be back in 2011 with more lists to entertain you, but tonight I simply wanted to give you a glimpse into the music that has truly been the soundtrack of my life over the last year. Happy new year everyone, and as always, thank you so much for being my TRUE friends.

Late Night Music Almost Christmas Edition Part 84........"It Can't Be That Bad"

I got this idea watching a Lady Gaga video.....what is the world coming to?

In order to be considered for this list, the SONG TITLE had to feature the word "BAD". Also receiving votes in this category were "Girls All The Bad Guys Want" by Bowling For Soup, "Need U Bad" by Jazmine Sullivan, "Good Times, Bad Times" by Godsmack, and "Want You Bad" by The Offspring.

"U Got It Bad"- Usher. Usher grabbed the #1 spot on the Billboard Charts with this song that closed out 2001's charts and the video featuring his future girlfriend Chili. This song only reminds us how stupid Usher was to let Chili- just look at her. I have to admit I was always more a fan of Usher's albums "My Way" and "Confessions" and never being big into "8701" despite it's popularity. This song just seems like it belongs on one of those other albums. I'm taking away bonus points for the fake rain near the end of the video- that is just stupid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3IWTfcks4k

"The Bad Touch"- The Bloodhound Gang. Argue with me if you want, but lead singer Jimmy Pop STILL looks like Mike O'Malley to me. I swear I used to think it was the same person. This "hit" was released in 1999 as the lead single from The Bloodhound Gang's album "Hooray For Boobies". I think I know where their mind was this entire album. This video was recently voted the #11 most inappropriate video of all time on MuchMusic.com. I'd really like to see who beat them out on this list. This is without a doubt, the most inappropriate video in the history of this blog- easily.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xat1GVnl8-k

"Bad Company"- Bad Company. Surprisingly, this is Bad Company's first ever appearance on "Late Night Music". This self-titled song was on the self-titled album of Bad Company in 1974. While there have been many instances of artists releasing songs that are the same as their band name (unfortunately), this is without a doubt the most successful attempt ever. Despite Bad Company being a great 70's rock band and their unbelievable "holy crap I didn't know they were British" effect, this song almost disqualifies itself for being so lame.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf3uiCfNkaM

"Bad Romance"- Lady Gaga. After the success of her debut album "The Fame", Lady Gaga originally decided to release new material onto a reissue album of "The Fame". Instead, Lady Gaga decided to leave the new material as a standalone EP entitled "The Fame Monster" and made it one of the most successful EPs of recent music history.Speaking of inappropriate videos- this one somehow relates Lady Gaga being sold as sexual slave in a bath house to this song about being in love with your best friend. Those two relate how exactly? Despite this nonsense connection, you can see from the view counter on the site that this video is one of the most watched videos in the history of youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I&NR=1

"Bad"- Michael Jackson. In 1987, Michael Jackson released his much anticipated follow up to "Thriller" and his worldwide debut as a white woman with a jheri curl with "Bad" and this title track being the second single from the album. All of you who know me know good and well that I am and always was a huge supporter of MJ's music, but this video is so incredibly stupid it's seriously unreal. There is no way you can convince me that the point of this video was to make Michael Jackson out as being "Bad".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON-w2WNxeqE

"You Give Love A Bad Name"- Bon Jovi. In 1986 Bon Jovi released their best album as a band "Slippery When Wet", which was also one of the best albums of the 80's. This lead single from the album gave Bon Jovi their first #1 hit. Is it just me, or does Richie Sambora look like he's not really singing in this video? He co-wrote the song with Jon Bon Jovi and he doesn't even know the words? Bonus points for this being one of my favorite party songs from college.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrZHPOeOxQQ

"Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad"- Meatloaf. The first verse of this song sounds like Carly Simon singing- I'm just saying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgK6dBefpu8

"Bad Day"- Daniel Powter. Our Canuck friend Daniel Powter is a great example of a modern day one hit wonder. This #1 song from 2005 has not only proven to be his 15 minutes of fame, it's proven to be one of the best songs from the 00's. However, I see this video and I feel like I'm watching a Gavin DeGraw video. Bonus points for filming part of the video on the subway in Los Angeles, because most people haven't seen the inside of one of those trains anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH476CxJxfg

"Bad Man"- R Kelly. Most people forget about the 2000 re-make of the film "Shaft". (With good reason. Seriously, not only was it called a "sequel" 29 years later with Shaft's "nephew" the new lead guy, but John Singleton directed it- why would you want to see it anyway?). However, the soundtrack featured two R Kelly tracks, which included this pretty good song despite it peaking at #118 (yes you read that right) on the Billboard Charts. This was pretty surprising because R Kelly was in between a time of a huge popularity with his success of "R" still flowing and with "TP-2.Com" coming out later that year. I have to admit I just snickered at the irony of this song and R Kelly's legal history. Question for this video is how many of you actually think R Kelly is playing the guitar in the video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Euz9a0oAlw

"A Bad Dream"- Keane. Keane followed up their 2004 debut smash "Hopes and Fears" with 2005's "Under The Iron Sea" and it became one of the most popular albums in the world in 2005 with this single closing out the album's singles in 2006. This was the only single from "Under The Iron Sea" to not crack the Top 20 which is pretty surprising because it's always been one of Keane's best songs to me. Unlike most British groups, there is no mistaking Keane for a British group. Seriously, just look at lead singer Tom Chaplin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbLoYVnh4sY

"I'm Bad"- LL Cool J. Oh yeah, he's bad alright, at ripping off Run DMC's look. Ya know I've always liked LL, but he seems alot more hard and actually capable of being a badass today than he did 23 years ago. This video must have been made before he started working out. Bonus points for the foreshadowing lyrics of "my rap is like a shark's fan". Those of you who know what I'm talking about are laughing pretty hard right now. I'm taking away points for the stupid Police dispatchers in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVDfyc2lh4Q

"Bad Habits"- Maxwell. What a great song to open an album with! This lead track off of "BLACKSummer's Night" was released shortly after "Pretty Wings" in 2009, and was actually released about a month before the actual album. This video just confirms the fact that Maxwell is not only immensely talented, he's also without a doubt one of the most cool human beings alive- it's almost not fair.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6s41gpCfg8

"Bad For Me"- Danielle Peck. Just for you country fans- now shut up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bv_QxtpfX9g

BONUS VIDEOS- "Shooting Star"- Bad Company. The best song from them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5qGhqbXsLM

"Bad Day"- Alvin and the Chipmunks. From the first movie.

Late Night Music Part 83......."I Can't Count, But I Can Color"

This one seriously just popped in my head just now. Nothing clever here, sorry- enjoy the list though.

In order to receive votes in this category, obviously the SONG TITLE had to feature a number of some sort. Also receiving in this category were "Song 2" by Blur, "One Is The Loneliest Number" by Three Dog Night, "Two Sparrows In A Hurricane" by Tanya Tucker, "One More Day" by Diamond Rio, "Just The Two Of Us" by Al Green, "I'm Sorry For 2004" by Reuben Studdard, "3 AM" by OAR, and "Colt 45" by Afroman.

"Nine In The Afternoon"- Panic! At The Disco. Appropriately enough, this song was the lead single for PATD's second album "Pretty. Odd.". I can't think of another way to describe this video. The funny thing is that PATD actually wrote this song right after they had scrapped an entire album worth of songs to start over again on this song. Not a bad choice if you ask me. This video was pitched to MTV by the band as "a series of bizarre yet fundamentally recognizable events with the band members". This song in parts really reminds me of the Beatles' "A Day In The Life", and the video obviously reminds me of "Sergeant Pepper", and in parts, of a color version of "A Hard Day's Night"- wait, does that even exist? These guys really also remind of the Monkees. Bonus points for winning the award for the band that sounds the most different from their first album and second album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCto3PCn8wo

"21 Questions"- 50 Cent featuring Nate Dogg. Sorry, I wasn't paying attention to what you said, I was looking at Meagan Good. This video is so stupid, but lord that woman burns up a screen!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDMhlvbOFaM

"One"- Mary J. Blige and U2. I know I've featured this one before, but I had to use it again. The more I listen to U2, the more I get into them. Their songs just have a weird way of flowing with the music. To top it off, Mary J just dominates this song. As I've said before, Mary J looks great in this video, and continues to look great as she gets OLDER- tell you something ladies? Take notes. I know I've also said it 100 times, but Mary's continued dives into rock music and other genres just shows that she is quite possibly the most diverse artist since Elvis, and I'm not even joking when I say that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpDQJnI4OhU

"Three Marlenas"- The Wallflowers. Jakob Dylan really sounds and looks like his dad- still baffling. In 1998, The Wallflowers were still on top of the world with their huge album "Bringing Down The Horse", which had been released 2 years prior. This single capped off one of the most successful albums of the 90's and in the process gave us one of the most confusing videos ever made. Anyone who can tell me what is going on can pick a topic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RloXtzcCAf8

"1234"- Plain White T's. After the success of their worldwide hit "Hey There, Delilah", Plain White T's released "Big Bad World" in 2008. The second single from the album was this one which peaked at #34 on the charts giving the band it's second top 40 hit. This song has been compared to "Hey There, Delilah" by many fans just because of it's sound and none of their other songs sounding like this. Funny how that works. This video actually made waves nationally just due to the personal nature of it and it having such a low budget. Very creative if you ask me- really good song too. Bonus points for being in Chicago's Wrigleyville.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYp0GVzmLgY

"Fifteen"- Taylor Swift. For all of you country fans out there. How in the WORLD does she always find a way to get on my lists? Taylor Swift is mad talented, but she really does have a way of getting lucky, even with stupid stuff like this. This song from her second album "Fearless" is based on Swift's real life experiences during her freshmen year of high school. Bonus points for Taylor Swift being at school in the video with no shoes on and not getting in trouble.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb-K2tXWK4w

"143"- Musiq Soulchild. I can't remember if I've featured this one or not, but the songs off of Musiq Soulchild's debut album "Aijuswanaseing" that WERE NOT released as singles are some of the best songs in 00's R & B. It debuted right after I graduated from high school, and led what would be a great decade of soul music off with a great album. Musiq continues to be one of my favorite artists of all time in the neo soul genre, but his first album is still the best.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy3SURjqJKM

"21 Guns"- Green Day. I don't know how many of you saw "The Sing-Off" Monday night, but this song being featured was pretty dang cool if you ask me. This song featured on Green Day's 2009 concept album "21st Century Breakdown" is the unofficial theme song of the album, and like most of the album (and accompanying Broadway Rock Opera "American Idiot", in which the song is featured in) it is heavily political. Not usually my cup of tea, but a really good song nonetheless and one of the better video in recent years. Great concept. Taking away bonus points for Billy Joe Armstrong's hair.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r00ikilDxW4

"Two Is Better Than One"- Boys Like Girls featuring Taylor Swift. How ridiculous is it that Taylor Swift doesn't appear in this video? I realize she's pretty dang famous, but is she really better than Boys Like Girls to the point where she can not even appear in the video? C'mon man! When "Love Drunk" came out in 2009, Boys Like Girls were looking for a huge push, and this song did the trick becoming their first ever Top 20 hit peaking at #18.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW3RspM7v9M

"45"- Shinedown. Man, this song helped me through some late night studying sessions at LSU! In 2004, when the song was released from the album "Leave a Whisper", the video was actually banned from MTV due to the band's refusal to change the lyrics of the chorus. The band still insists to this day this song is not literal and has nothing to do with suicide, and that the gun reference is nothing but a metaphor. Man this song rocks so hard! Brent Smith was one of the best front men of the 00's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLeIyy2ipps

"1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)"- Coolio. Man, when gangster rap was taking over the hip hop industry, Coolio made rap fun again with his 1995 album "Gangster's Paradise". While the title track from the "Dangerous Minds" soundtrack talked about life on the streets, Coolio's other songs are nothing short of comical and his videos are hilarious just because he's in them. He may have had some street edge to him, but he wasn't worried about busting a cap in anyone- ya know? This song peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was actually featured in an alternate video/version with the Muppets....hmm, I smell a bonus video. Bonus points for Coolio's hair.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5hUtu-M3_s

"Year 3000"- The Jonas Brothers. The fact that I keep finding excuses to put this song on here is getting kind of scary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d64_AJTKsMA

"One"- Creed. Classic live TV FAIL here! This performance from "The Late Show with David Letterman" is classic despite the rocky start for Scott Stapp and company. I am guessing that since "My Own Prison" was released in late 1997 and this is prior to David Letterman's hair transplant that this performance is from around 1998. Scott Stapp absolutely owned the mic and the screen in this performance. I am so glad Creed is back together. While their early stuff will always be their best, they will always put on a great show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DoQizE0zNw

"One Love"- Bob Marley and The Wailers. Another song from the 1977 legendary album "Exodus", this song has remained one of Bob Marley's more recognizable songs. Also, most people don't realize that the song uses the exact same lyrics in certain places as "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, and due to this, songwriting credits were given to Curtis Mayfield on this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdB-8eLEW8g

"6 Months"- Hey Monday. LOVE Hey Monday! I'm glad I got a chance to feature them on here again and their great album "Hold On Tight". Cassadee Pope has an UNREAL voice and her range is unmatched from any other lead singer I know of male or female. This song just shows how much heart and passion Hey Monday put into their music. I'm really excited about their new album coming out early next year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_0ICjcPZLI

"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)"- The Proclaimers. These Scottish twins are just funny to watch. They had the good luck of having a fan in Mary Stuart Masterson, who played their 1988 album "Sunshine On Leith" constantly on set of the 1993 movie co-starring Johnny Depp "Benny and Joon". The producers loved the song so much that they added it to the soundtrack and it became The Proclaimers biggest hit when it was re-released in 1993 reaching #3 on the charts. Not bad for a song that was released 5 years prior. I'm still laughing at how hard these guys sing.

Late Night Music Part 82......."I Hear What You're Saying.......I Think"

I have to thank my good friend Megan Kash for inspiring tonight's list due to our long phone conversation. I think she finally realizes where I get my ideas from.......random thoughts. She was like "since we talked for so long, why don't you make that the title of a blog"- yes mam. I got to thinking about it, and it's funny how people SING about TALKING. It's really a funny combo if you really think about it. How often do people talk about singing? Alot, but you don't really have alot of other way around. Sometimes, we have to sing just to get people to listen. Other times, talking was just boring- but not for someone like me.

In order to be considered for this category the song title had to have something to do with speaking. Also receiving votes in this category were "Say It Right" by Nelly Furtado, "Say It" by Blue October, "Just Say Yes" by Snow Patrol, "Careless Talk" by Billy Joel, "Say You Love Me" by Fleetwood Mac, NOT RECEIVING VOTES was "Say Goodbye" by Chris Brown- people who suck that bad will never be on this list. Also, "How Do You Talk To An Angel" by the Heights won't be included- I've used that one WAY too much lately.

"Talk Dirty To Me"- Poison. Was there a cooler American hair band in the 80's? Def Leppard is my favorite 80's hair band, but Poison is a very close second. In 1986, their appropriately titled debut album "Look What The Cat Dragged In" peaked at #3 on the charts. This song was Poison's first big hit peaking #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. Rikki Rockett is one of the best guitar players in music history, but dang he looks like a freaking woman right here. I still think he wears make up- didn't you guys see him on "The Surreal World"?. I'm still in amazement about how awesome Bret Michaels was and is and how he was such a hardcore rock star while being diabetic. Bonus points for this song being on Guitar Hero 3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCChxBSRo1Y

"Whatcha Say"- Jason Derulo. Ok, I have to admit I first heard this song on my dear friend Melissa Dunlap's ring tone on her phone. I probably never would have heard this song other wise. Part of me thinks that Jason Derulo wants to be Michael Ealy with his horrid "line beard". Who ever told people this was cool? Also, is it just me, or does he kinda like a skinnier version of the black guy on "Glee" who picks on Curt and Finn all the time? The funny thing is that this song reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but yet I had never heard it other than Melissa's ring tone. Sometimes I think that despite my vast musical knowledge I live under a rock.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBI3lc18k8Q

"Talking To The Moon"- Bruno Mars. I have to admit that I am slowly getting on the Bruno Mars bandwagon. This guy is super talented and has some pretty catchy songs. Ever since the cover of his song "Marry You" on "Glee" I've really started paying attention, and with this recent Grammy nomination plethora, I think we might be hearing more from Mr. Mars soon. This video is actually NOT the video for the song, as the song hasn't been released as a single, but I think it probably should be. His debut album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" should rack up Grammys next year, as it missed the release deadline for this year's awards by a mere 4 days.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K59Tmrs9YD0

"Talk To Me"- Stevie Nicks. I can't believe I had actually forgotten about this song. Being the huge Stevie Nicks fan I am, I always thought this was one of her better songs, but I have to admit I stumbled on this one tonight by accident- what am I thinking? Anyway, by 1981 Fleetwood Mac was already starting to drift apart after their release of "Tusk" and the band took a year break to work on solo projects. In fact, Stevie's debut solo album "Bella Donna" in 1981 topped most Fleetwood Mac albums in sales (obviously it didn't touch "Rumours"), but the fact was that Stevie Nicks could make it as a solo artist. While Fleetwood Mac released 3 more albums, 1982's "Mirage" , 1987's "Tango In The Night", and 1990's "Behind The Mask" (if that one counts), Stevie Nicks was making a huge splash as a solo artist. By the time 1985 had rolled around, she had already released her third solo album "Rock A Little" which featured this hit song. Stevie actually didn't write this song and was hesitant to record it at first just because she thought it would be hard to sing. So hard to sing that it peaked at #4.

"Talk"- Coldplay. In 2005, Coldplay released their much anticipated album "X and Y", and at the time were arguably the #1 rock act in the world after the success of "Parachutes" and "A Rush Of Blood To The Head". While some people weren't as big on "X and Y" as the other albums, Chris Martin went out of his way to write inspirational music including this song. This video shows that Coldplay was dedicated to making complex music and videos for this album, as this video where the robot represents the people he is trying to inspire.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0uqLM1uj_k

"I Wanna Talk About Me"- Toby Keith. Wow, Toby Keith has a really big head. This song was always pretty appropriate as Toby Keith always enjoyed talking about himself. Ya know if the whole music thing never worked out, I so could see Toby Keith being a professional wrestler- right, Moon?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxUuDPNbkJk

"Talkin' To Me"- Amerie. Amerie released her debut album "All I Have" in 2002 with this song not long after. I always thought she was pretty cute and this is a decent song, but obviously "all she had" wasn't enough to keep her at the top of the charts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKrcOOLpw64

"Say My Name"- Destiny's Child. This video just makes me laugh. This video was released for the third single for "The Writing's On The Wall" in January of 2000. The album was a smash hit selling 8 million copies and was rare as it was a concept album by a R & B female group- something still that is unheard of. However, Latavia Roberson and Letoya Luckett who co-wrote and recorded the song with Destiny's Child are nowhere to be found in this video despite their vocals being played in the song. Just a month prior, in a very controversial lawsuit, Luckett and Roberson had sued Destiny's Child management for not giving them a fair proportion of the earnings that were given to Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. While they never intended to leave the group, management for the group signed Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin (who was actually an EXTRA in the video for "Bills, Bills, Bills".) and then filmed the video for "Say My Name" without the knowledge of the other group members. What a way to be fired. That being said, I think I fell in love with Beyonce when I saw this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQgd6MccwZc

"Things People Say"- Lady Antebellum. Once again, this is another unofficial music video for this song, as this song off of Lady Antebellum's self titled debut album was never released as a single, but I think it should have been- what a great song! Just hearing this song could let you know that Lady Antebellum was going to be destined for great things as a group. I'm going ahead and predicting them sweeping this year's Grammys. For some reason, our songs tonight are taking a pretty inspirational turn. I know alot of people who could get alot out of this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zaAZ3q41Yw

"Never Say Never"- The Fray. I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard The Fray. I've been hooked ever since. Then, I saw them, and I really wished I had just HEARD them. As talented as Isaac Slade is, I really wish I never saw him- what a weird looking guy! However, this song from their self titled sophomore album is nominated for a Grammy this year, rightfully so. But so much for our list being inspirational tonight. Also, do any of you ever see or hear the Fray and think that they are really a British band? I think they are the Live of the next generation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aihu16RyYp8

"Say Say Say"- Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. Still a great song. Still a gay video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLEhh_XpJ-0

"Say It Ain't So"- Weezer. Wow, this is my first Weezer video! What a great song! I love how Weezer is a really good rock band while still being hilarious, because if you really listen to the lyrics of this song, you see how it's serious and funny at the same time- aren't most of their songs like that? While the song is written in a comic tone, the song is actually about Rivers Cuomo coming home and finding beer in his fridge and being afraid his step-father would be an alcoholic like his father, which led to his parents divorce. It's amazing how much great music that is really funny can come out of such a bad situation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENXvZ9YRjbo

"I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song"- Jim Croce. Ok, the picture of Jim Croce with short hair really freaked me out. I never got into Jim Croce, and maybe it was because the guy just looks like a pedophile. This song and the album "I Got A Name" were actually released after Croce's death in 1973.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RabAcvizwKY

"Say You, Say Me"- Lionel Richie. I think Chris Tucker said it best when he said "Lionel Richie ain't been black since the Commodores man". I didn't know this, but this song was actually written as the theme song for the Gregory Hines/Mikhail Baryshnikov movie "White Nights". That alone might make Lionel Richie the cheesiest singer ever. I love Richie's voice, but that guy has the worst afro ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we0mk_J0zyc

"Careless Whisper"- Wham!. Devon, was there ever any doubt that George Michael was gay? I love how even youtube refuses to credit Andrew Ridgeley, who not only wrote the song, was the freaking other member of Wham! I bet the amount of fan mail ratio received difference between the two was staggering. Maybe it was a George Michael thing. He also never credited any of the actresses who appeared in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izGwDsrQ1eQ

"Don't Speak"- No Doubt. Wow, I finally broke down. I remember in high school you having to have "Tragic Kingdom" in order to be cool. Needless to say, I wasn't cool. This song got old in a hurry, though I have to admit it's pretty good writing. I also think its cool how the song is about Tony Kanal and he still plays the bass on it- gotta give the guy props for that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR3Vdo5etCQ

"Hello, Goodbye"- The Beatles. Saw Paul open with this song in 2002 in New Orleans Arena. This song from "Magical Mystery Tour" was actually recorded during the "Sergeant Pepper" sessions, but was released as a stand alone single in 1967 and was featured on the soundtrack to the film in the United States that same year. First Beatles CD I ever bought.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf2S7kKLtEQ

"When You Say Nothing At All"- Alison Krauss. Wow, I am really racking up country songs on this one. Don't get used to it! This was always one of my favorite country songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjsjZWlRVvo

"She Talks To Angels"- The Black Crowes. More like the black crackheads. Do these guys just try to look like idiots? Anyway, spectacular song here and was one of the best of the 1990's. The song peaked at #30 in 1990 from their album "Shake Your Money Maker". This song is actually about a woman who lost a child (the "angel") and releases her pain through the use of illegal drugs. Wow, like these guys would ever write a song about drugs and it surprise anyone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a76FeV2-Dw

"State Your Peace"- Hootie and the Blowfish. I still think "Looking For Lucky" is Hootie's best album. Absolutely love this song.

These were the ones singing, but we didn't see all of them in the video
Stevie Nicks
he has a huge head!

Late Night Music Part 81......."Female Lead Singers"

For some reason, I feel like honoring females once again. I've done a list on female songwriters and a list on all girl groups, what about when the female is the FACE of the band? This is the equivalent of having a female quarterback, or the equivalent of Joan of Arc in 15th century France leading her army in the Hundred Years War. Not only is it rare, it's hard to pull off successfully just to the nature of the music business and what people think stereotypes fit in with identity of a lead singer.

In order to be considered for this list, a band simply must have had a female singer. All girl groups like Klymaxx, The Go-Go's, The Bangles, and Joan Jett and The Blackhearts were disqualified. In a rare feat, all bands receiving votes were included on this list.

"Playing God"- Paramore. This is the newest single from Paramore's latest album "Brand New Eyes" and was obviously written when Hayley Williams was really pissed off. I think she's really hot, but after this seeing this video, maybe I'll change my mind. Not a fan of the pink hair either. The song, if you listen really closely, also deals with people being judgmental of other faiths/beliefs, hence the title.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDy2wCQYSrU%EF%BB%BF

"Gypsy"- Fleetwood Mac.Yes, Fleetwood Mac counts. They have 3 lead vocalists and 2 of them are female. I don't care what you say, they are so awesome I'm including them. In 1982, Fleetwood Mac was looking to recapture the success of "Rumours" after their experimental double album "Tusk". So the band not only heavily pushed the song, but this video, which at the time, was the most expensive video ever made. Despite that, this song only peaked at #12 on the Billboard Chart. Stevie Nicks has said that this song is a wishful plea for her life before Fleetwood Mac with Lindsey Buckingham. Don't really know why she'd want that though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soioqrYorq4

"Don't Dream It's Over"- Sixpence None The Richer. COVER SONG ALERT! Most people remember this song being a hit for New Zealand band Crowded House in 1987, but it was later released by Sixpence None the Richer in 2003 off of their album "Divine Discontent". Leigh Nash and Sixpence hit mainstream in 1998 with their self titled album. After the success of the album, the band released this song in 2003 and hit the top 10 in their familiar Christian genre, but failed to make a major splash on the mainstream charts, with this song peaking at #78 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite that, this is still a fan favorite for many Sixpence fans, and is the best Leigh Nash has ever looked as her hair doesn't look like a fireball as it has before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bdOefF_tyU

"Missing"- Flyleaf. Released earlier this year, this song is from Flyleaf's latest album "Memento Mori". Lacey Mosley really doesn't look like a rock star, she actually looks more like a stage actress or even a homemaker, but man she can rock a mic! Flyleaf is one of those bands that is Christian, but no one knows it. This song deals with several Biblical issues and has a few quotes from the book of Ecclesiastes. I like this song, but it just screams "Tonight Tonight" by Smashing Pumpkins just a LITTLE bit too much. Check out the bonus video and let me know what you think.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X5lbZi6UUo

"Open Your Eyes"- Guano Apes. Another band that could have been included on "No Matter Where You Are In The World, If You're In The Bathroom, I Still Think European", as this band is from Germany. Pretty good band, really cool name. I wish I would have thought of it first honestly. Sandra Nasic, the lead singer looks like she's one of the torture victims during this season of "Dexter" in this video. She can really play a part. This song, on the appropriately named "Planet Of The Apes" from 2004 was released just before their breakup in 2005. Guano Apes are currently reunited and back touring in Europe. Also, this video kind of makes me think I'm seeing her in Jigsaw traps from the "Saw" movie series. Is that disturbing?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFvCx6w_ptE

"The World Is New"- Save Ferris. Wow, we haven't seen these guys in a while. This ska band from Orange County hasn't been on one of my lists since we talked about their wonderful rendition of "Come On Eileen". Monique Powell is still really making me wonder why she was even in this band. She's not spectacular looking, but come on. Look at her. Now look at her bandmates- see what I mean? I know the imbalance is pretty typical in female fronted bands, but this here is on another level. Maybe that's why they broke up in 2002. This song led of Save Ferris's first full length album "It Means Everything".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GDZp0bPRcU

"Stupid Girl"- Garbage. I never liked Garbage, as I thought their name represented their sound. I think Shirley Manson was not only overrated, I think she was quite possibly the worst looking woman that people actually claim is beautiful. I just don't like much about this band. That being said, I was always pretty confused about how people always thought that you were cool if you liked this band. I remember 1996 being a year of "you have to like Garbage or you're a prep" lines being uttered by several of my friends of the grunge/goth world. The stupidest part of the whole thing is that Garbage is more pop sounding than some pop bands, they just have a crazy lead singer who moans in the microphone and wears black eye makeup.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HBxUWSxcq8

"You're The Storm"- The Cardigans. I had to include a song that not as many people knew by the Cardigans, as they actually have a pretty solid European following despite their American audience being limited to their hit song "Lovefool". This song went to #10 in Sweden off of their 2003 album "Long Gone Before Daylight". Bonus points for recording a song in English that wasn't released in the United States. As you can see/hear, the Cardigans are a very diverse band, as this song is completely opposite sounding of "Lovefool". I really like Nina Persson as a brunette. Why don't more Scandinavian women go for this look? Anyway, great song here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxZ9_XlL19E

"Bring Me To Life"- Evanescence. What a song to release as your debut single! This song, also featured as the theme for the movie "Daredevil", led off Evanescence's album "Fallen" in 2003, and won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance and peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Amy Lee has one of the better voices in rock music- she can really belt it out! That being said, why does the band make her be in a different room? That's pretty mean. It really doesn't look like he tried that hard to save her either. Evanescence is another one of those bands that is "Christian", but actually picketed for their music to stop being sold in Christian music stores just because they thought it would hurt their fan base.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YxaaGgTQYM

"Celebrity Skin"- Hole. I put Hole right up there with Garbage, but at least Courtney Love is hot. I am still convinced she not only had something to do with Kurt Cobain's death, but that she only married him to get famous herself. Bonus points to anyone who can identify the gender of the bass player.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3dWBLoU--E

"New"- No Doubt. We all know how I feel about No Doubt, so I did not venture away from the one song I always claim is their best. Despite this song being heavily marketed and being included on the soundtrack of the 1999 movie "Go". This song actually never even charted. Maybe that's a sign that you actually suck. Really love this song though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtStjGHttGM

"Linger"- The Cranberries. Just because I love the movie "Click". Michelle, do you remember how many times you listened to this song in Texas?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Kspj3OO0s

"I Don't Wanna Dance"- Hey Monday. I recently got into Hey Monday on Pandora Radio and was instantly hooked. They remind me of Paramore in so many ways, and also a really hot lead singer in Cassadee Pope, who I admit is even hotter than Hayley Williams. This song is included on their new EP "Beneath It All", and will be included on their upcoming album due to be released in 2011. I have a feeling that Hey Monday will soon be as popular as Paramore, as I see many more hits in their future. Super awesome video here, but I am NOT digging the pink stockings, but I'm digging everything else. I think Pope looks the hottest when she is in the audience talking to the cameraman. This song makes me laugh- it's about the guy blowing the big chance with the hot chick he has no business being with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R048sqs8BM

"Don't You Want Somebody"- Jefferson Airplane. Grace Slick and her band are included just to show all of her sexual partners in the span of a week. Grace Slick will always be known as the biggest slut in music history. She could have been a decent lead singer, but her legs always being spread open kinda tore her band apart. The fact that this band went from psychedelic rockers here to the bonus video below is a FAIL beyond belief.

Late Night Music Part 80....."I'm Dancing! I'm Dancing!"

Such a big part of music is the actual act of dancing. While I always knew this, I never got why I was so bad at it. For those of you who have actually seen me try to dance- try not to laugh, as my inability to dance may be the whitest thing about me. However, so many times artists write about dancing in their music as a form of a variety of emotions ranging from remembrance, happiness, sadness, or just being stoned of your mind. Any way you sing about it, dancing, as hard as it is for a guy like me, is still a huge part of music.

Obviously, in order to be considered for this list, the song title must feature the word "Dance" in it. Also receiving votes in this category were "Dance, Dance" by Fall Out Boy, "Dance Me To The End Of Love" by Leonard Cohen, "Murder On The Dance Floor" by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, "Blood On The Dance Floor" by Michael Jackson, "Dancing" by Elisa, and "She's Got Me Dancing" by Tommy Sparks. NOT receiving votes in this category was "Dancing In The Dark" by Bruce Springsteen. Sorry, he really really sucks.

"Dancing In The Moonlight"- King Harvest. Ok, how many of us thought that Van Morrison did this one? Guilty. I really had no idea on this one. I think part of the confusion is this song and Morrison's 1970 hit "Moondance". Help me out here classmates, but wasn't this song the theme to our senior prom? I may be mistaken, but I'm almost positive on this one. More of the confusion might be the fact that this was King Harvest's only even MINOR hit, as they are a TRUE one hit wonder, as this song from their self titled 1973 album was truly their 15 minutes of fame. One of the best songs of the 1970's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NslA5sGAf7k

"Slow Dancing In A Burning Room"- John Mayer. Without a doubt, this is my favorite John Mayer song. Those of you who pay attention may notice this song from my famous "song lyric" statuses that I occasionally litter your home pages with. This song, included on his 2006 hit album "Continuum" is shown in a live performance here from the Nokia Theater in 2007. Bonus points for Steve Jordan going crazy at the drums. This song just shows the deeply personal lyrics that are all over this great album. This song reminds me of so many women I have met in my life and is quite possibly the best breakup song I've ever heard. I still get chills listening to this song every time I hear it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6HppOWNWcY

"Safety Dance"- Men Without Hats. Like I said before, not only is this band Canadian when they appear British, this song is actually a protest song about the banning of pogo dancing in certain Canadian nightclubs in the 1980's due to it "looking dangerous", as it was the new craze with the dying days of disco right around the corner. Still doesn't explain why they decided to put abunch of British midgets in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7movKfyTBII

"Alll She Wants To Do Is Dance"- Don Henley. This Billboard Top 10 song from Don Henley on his 1984 second solo album "Building The Perfect Beast" is ironic because the song is about women not wanting to settle down and only wanting to dance and party all the time. The song went on to be a dance club hit- talk about poetic justice. Really not a huge fan of this song, and the video is hard to watch. Just an Eagles fan, I guess you can call it an Eagles song seeing how they always play this one at their shows now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QSyaBHr1jU

"Dance With My Father"- Luther Vandross. No words for this one. Just watch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foXCi7Bzc-I

"Dancing In The Street"- Mick Jagger and David Bowie. This song was originally recorded Martha and The Vandellas in 1964 and has been done by at least (just off the top of my head 5 other artists) - SUPER COVER SONG ALERT! This version was recorded in 1985 as part of the Live Aid relief effort with all proceeds going towards charity. The original plan was to record the song live while David Bowie was in London and Mick Jagger was in Philadelphia, but due to the half second tape delay across the Atlantic (something that would still be nearly impossible even with today's technology), the idea was scrapped, and the two simply recorded the duet that was shown at both Live Aid venues.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G4jnaznUoQ

"Just Dance"- Lady Gaga featuring Colby O'Donis. Why do I keep going back to Lady Gaga? Why is she even popular? Does anyone even know anything about her? Talk about a lucky person being in the right place and the right time. Well the answer might be with this, her debut single from her debut album "The Fame", that is surprisingly catchy despite the song being inspired by Lady Gaga's experiences being drunk while at a nightclub. How appropriate was it that her next single was "Poker Face"?. The song literally came out of nowhere to hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008 and remains to this day one of the best selling singles in the history of music. See what I mean?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Abk1jAONjw

"Up Here For Thinking, Down There For Dancing"- Black Taxi. This band from Brooklyn, adds yet another up and coming band to "Late Night Music" for this song from their latest album "Things Of That Nature". Double bonus points on this video. First of all, for the karate garb. Second, for actually making noise in the library. I do realize you've probably never heard of these guys, but I promise they are American. Another band here that could win the award for "band that seems the most British but isn't British".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suFowgJWww0

"Dancing In Circles"- Love And Theft. For you country fans. This song from their 2009 album "World Wide Open" . Love and Theft has been mistaken by many as being a Christian band. Just because an artist records a "Christian" song doesn't make them a "Christian" band. I like this song, but I've always had a problem with videos that show a band playing on a stage without the full band. See, we see the guitars and piano but no drums, strings, bass, or steel guitar. Why do country artists cut corners like this? I'm taking away bonus points for this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69_XxCQYg1U

"Dance Into The Light"- Phil Collins. I realize I featured this one recently. I'm still wondering how Phil Collins could release this song with such a flippant mood of being free after leaving Genesis. Still seems kinda rude.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZnD6HqCKZI

"Dancing Queen"- ABBA. Whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFrGuyw1V8s

"Mary Jane's Last Dance"- Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. I remember in 5th grade when Tom Petty released his "Greatest Hits" album with this song being the single promoting the album with the very hot Kim Basinger. While this song only peaked at #14, it received tons of airplay, and for some reason, you weren't cool if you didn't have this CD. This video won several VMAs despite being inspired by my all time least favorite book "Great Expectations" and my all time least favorite movie "Weekend At Bernie's". This song was one of the very last to feature the original Heartbreaker lineup in the band as drummer Stan Lynch would leave the band the following year.
