Late Night Music Cinco de Mayo Edtion Part 43.................."En Espanol"

In the spirit of Cinco de Mayo, I thought it only appropriate to include those Spanish songs that make wanna dance like a salsa dancing fool. While many of these songs were originally recorded in English, some were originally in Spanish and only became famous after being recorded in English. It's important to recognize and understand Latino heritage and Latino music as part of American music and part of American culture, and while the majority of these artists are Mexican, great Latin music comes from all over the world. Obviously, in order to qualify for this list, the song had to be completely in Spanish even if it had an English version. (For example, "Bailamos" by Enrique Iglesias and "Uno Noche" by 98 Degrees would both be disqualified). Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my Mexican friends and to everyone else out there- take it easy on the margaritas.

"La Bamba"- Los Lobos. Los Lobos brought back this old Mexican folk song made famous by Ritchie Valens for the 1987 movie of the same name about Valens. Lou Diamond Phillips makes an appearance in the video due to his role of Ritchie Valens in the movie. "La Bamba" is actually a Mexican dance from the Mexican province Veracruz primarliy used at weddings. Ritchie Valens simply merged the song with rock to add to the Mexican flavor of the song. I love this song- huge bonus points for being on "Guitar Hero".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhFM81IcChk

"Heroe"- Enrique Iglesias. Spanish version of the huge Enrique Iglesias hit "Hero" from his 2001 album "Escape". Most people forget that Enrique is in fact the son of Latin Music mega star Julio Iglesias and while starting out in Mexican music, is actually from Spain. For some reason, Jennifer Love Hewitt was a huge choice to be in music videos in the early 2000's (see "Boy Bands"), but I can't say I blame the artists- seriously........just look at her. I have always really enjoyed this song, and while being a huge goob, Enrique Iglesias is actually a really good singer. I really wanna try this song out in karaoke. This is one of the few bilingual songs that I can think of that basically has the same video version for English and whatever other language it is in. Both versions of this video are basically the same, just with Enrique obviously mouthing different words in each one. I used to think Lassiter was gonna "change teams" for this guy. He just drips with awesomeness. Infinite bonus points for including Mickey Rourke in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQeniTaD5fs

"Macarena"- Los Del Rio. This is the REAL Spanish version of the song. The "Bayside Boys" remix which became popular in the United States, was actually a triple remake of the original song by Seville, Spain's own Los Del Rio. The "Spanglish" version is a popular one at weddings and such (ok I know where this is going), but is NOT the original. More on this one later. Dude dancing has a gay-dar off the charts- what you think Devon?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1pIboUZQF4

"Oye Como Va"- Santana. As legendary in Mexico Carlos Santana is for his songwriting and guitar playing, "Oyes Como Va" is actually a cover of a 1963 Latin Jazz hit by Tito Puente. Santana's 1971 version was instrumental in reintroducing latin rock to the United States and is still his biggest spanish language hit in the United States. Great live performance here- man this song makes me want to dance! Has anyone ever seen Carlos Santana without a hat on?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpPb2cVswlI

"Loba"- Shakira. Spanish version of her worldwide hit "She Wolf" (the Spanish version actually came first- as is the case with the majority of Spanish language singers). There really isn't much I can add to this one- watch the video and you'll see why. Most people forget that Shakira is Colombian, and a beautiful Colombian she is!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7ssrLSheg4

"Vuelve"- Ricky Martin. The title track from Ricky Martin's worldwide smash album from 1998 which has sold over 8 million copies to date. Considering there is not a single English track on the album, that is pretty impressive. However, I do think the sales totals are a bit skewed because it boasts of very high American sales, which is probably true, but those numbers also include his native Puerto Rico. This song just sounds English- can't stop listening to it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7QYo-9SlP0

"Amor Prohibido"- Selena. The title track from Selena's final Spanish studio album (which is still the biggest selling Latin album of all time at 24 million copies sold! WOW!) in 1994 has always been a favorite video of mine. The "Mexican Madonna" as she was called, she shows just how great and beautiful she was with this song. Hard to believe that at the time this video was shot she was merely 23 years old. This song "forbidden love" is obviously about her relationship with eventual husband Chris Perez, who was a member of her band. Her father at first did not approve and threatened to fire him from the band, but eventually came around after urging from Selena. Great song- what a beautiful woman!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvfZ95ueOcQ

BONUS VIDEO- "Dreaming of You"- Selena. Before her murder in 1995, you would think that Selena would have been the next worldwide superstar after the release of these English tracks that included this song in released after her death in August 1995.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9_X0zx-W6k

BONUS VIDEO #2- Me doing the "Macarena"- see- told you it makes you dance......well try to dance.

Late Night Music Middle Tennessee Looks Like Noah's Ark Edition Part 42....................."Weather Wonderland"

Before reading please know that I am not making light of the families who have been negatively effected by the events of this weekend. May everyone stay safe and may everyone recover quickly from the horrible weather.

While most of Middle Tennessee is in the middle of a record breaking rainfall and flood, we have to take time to pay homage to the songs that make us want to be weather men/women. Weather is something we take for granted but is quite possibly one of the most powerful forces on earth, and sometimes it takes a song for us to realize that. Just the use of weather terminology in a song can make a song that much more powerful. In order to receive votes in this category, the SONG TITLE had to have a weather term in it.

Also receiving votes in this category were- "No Rain" by Blind Melon, "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors, and "Ride the Lightning" by Metallica (I didn't have the royalty money to pay James Hetfield).

"Storm"- Lifehouse. Lifehouse has always gotten a bad rap as "sappy" or "sissy" but Jason Wade is not only a really good singer, he is a complex and emotional songwriter, and this song is no different. In this live performance in 2007, he not only commands the song, he commands the whole stage. I love watching Jason Wade perform. Wow- chills.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn7pWm4i0ZU

"Flood"- Jars of Clay. I love how Jars of Clay was the first Christian band I ever heard called a "garage band". They broke through in 1996 with this huge hit which many people thought was being told through the eyes of Noah in the Bible. However, if you really listen to the words, you can see that the "flood" can literally mean anything. I can't figure out why Jars of Clay wants to be so scary and dark- I realize that's the nature of the song, but they could quite possibly be the LEAST recognizable band I've ever liked. They just like hiding their faces I guess. Are they that ugly?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfAhpX_wIBk

"Texas Tornado"- Tracy Lawrence. Alot of people tell me I don't feature enough country music. Well, here ya go. Tracy Lawrence was one of the biggest acts in country music in the early 90's with 5 #1 singles including 4 in a row. When 1995 rolled around, he opened the year with his fifth #1 single from this album "I See It Now". However, I don't get the space man dropping out of thin air- then we don't even see him again until he disappears......ok. This video has the poor quality of most early-mid 90's country videos of having over the top bad acting and being very literal. I have always been a sucker for this song, but if you notice Tracy Lawrence may have been the originator of the "bad blonde mullet" in country music which has since been carried on by such singers as Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, and Trace Adkins. The sad part is that all of them kept it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=673z5uD84UM

"Thunderstruck"- AC/DC. You know, for a song that was started as a joke, I think this one turned out ok. Angus Young was showing his bandmates a "trick on the guitar" which became the opening of this song. I understand that Brian Johnson is an awesome lead singer, but there should be a tan/muscle requirement for wearing a tight wife beater like that. Seriously, would I wear something like that and get away with it? Is it just me, or does AC/DC always seem like they are playing a concert in a prison?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvoeeq-BH4w

"Two Sparrows in a Hurricane"- Tanya Tucker. Tanya Tucker has always been one of the hottest cougars around despite being one of the loosest women in Nashville. Getting past that, this song was always one of her songs that made her seem so sweet. From her 1992 album "Can't Run From Yourself". Tanya made this really sweet country ballad about happy relationships after her much publicized flings with the likes of Glen "Rhinestone Cowboy" Campbell. To top it all off, this video absolutely sucks- quite possibly the pinnacle of cheesy country music videos of the 1990's. I feel like I'm watching a bad episode of "Quantum Leap".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUsyHVjacJ0

"Tidal Wave"- Owl City. Ok I totally love Owl City! Most people don't know that the "band" is really just one person- Adam Young. His synth pop project has turned into a large world wide following with songs already out like "Fireflies". This song right here not only shows his musical talent, but the video, while simple, is absolute genius. I think it does a great job getting its point across while being humorous. You have to pay attention to the words when you see what happens- great use of lyrics in the video. Who says you can't make a good video in these tough economic times?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPsU7x2tEDY

"Rock You Like A Hurricane"- The Scorpions. Our friends from Germany were a bit confused in this video. I feel like this is a cross between "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Mad Max:Beyond Thunderdome", and a really bad Prince video set in the future. I have nothing on this one folks- I have no idea what anything in this video means. While he looks more like a lawyer, lead singer Klaus Meine might have the best name in music. This has always been one of my favorite songs on "Guitar Hero".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yP1tcy9a10

"Cyclone"- Baby Bash/ T-Pain. I'm sorry, Baby Bash looks more like a high school janitor than a rapper, how does he change voices like that? That's seriously so cool- I always thought it was two different people. Why does T-Pain find it necessary to cover his mouth with the bandana? Does he have a cold or something?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-1575pG-kc

"Lightning Crashes"- Live. Lassiter- THEY SAY PLACENTA!

still can't see what they look like
the worst hairstyle ever
one of the hottest women you don't know about

Late Night Music Part 41................."Boy Bands"

I always loved boy bands- but not in the way you would think. I wanted to BE in one. Think about it- best life in the world. You don't have to write your own music, you don't have to play any instruments, you travel the world, you have millions of women falling at your feet, and you make a ton of money doing it. While my visions of grandeur have since died since I have "grown up" a little bit, I still think boy bands are cool......kinda. Some are cool, and some just make you shake your head (these are mentioned in the groups that did not receive votes in this category), so there's always a fine line. Wait, stop, why am I even getting this detailed? On to the list..........

Also receving votes in this category were-"When the Lights Go Out" by Five, "Sukiyaki" by 4 p.m., and "Back For Good" by Take That. NOT receiving votes was anything by IMX, B2K, Az Yet, N-Toon, Boyzone, or 3T. Also, there will be NO Marshall Dyllon on this post.....none at all- sorry Lassiter.

"As Long As You Love Me"- Backstreet Boys. Don't even laugh, you know how much I like the Backstreet Boys- Kevin Richardson was always one of those guys I just always hated (in a good way), he had the perfect hair, the perfect cheek bones, and the perfect body. Not to mention he has the perfect 5 o'clock shadow that never goes away. In fact, I think all of them are pretty freaking awesome..........well except Nick Carter- seriously, look at that guy's hair! After Backstreet's US debut single "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" in 1997, Backstreet followed it up with this song and video, which I have to admit I really really like. I think the chair dance is pretty cool, and even though they stole it from Michael Jackson's "Black or White" video, I really like the morphing. Super bonus points for the hot chicks who include Leigh Anne Wallace, who would marry Brian Littrell in 2000 after meeting at this video shoot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8o-i1exXUO0

"I Do (Cherish You)"- 98 Degrees. Most people forget, but this song, which is also my favorite by 98 Degrees, was the video featured on the pilot episode of MTV's "Making the Video" in 1999. Actually a cover (OH MAN! A COVER SONG!) of a country song by Mark Wills, this song helped catapult "98 Degrees and Rising" and the band into super stardom in the late 90's. INFINITE bonus points for Ali Landry, who at this point, was famous for her Doritos commercials and for being the woman who broke up with Mario Lopez the night before their wedding. I hate to say Dustin Diamond makes this video funny because anyone who watched "Celebrity Fit Club" knows what a douche he is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kofixtz2Us

"Girl On TV"- LFO. Or the "Lyte Funky Ones" as them and Lou Pearlman so affectionately called themselves. This song is based on group member Rich Cronin's then girlfriend Jennifer Love Hewitt (obviously), but they broke up after she cheated on him with 98 Degree's Jeff Timmons. I guess he was still heart sick over Screech taking his girl. Pretty decent song here, I'm just glad LFO actually came out with a song that made sense after the release of "Summer Girls".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4iGDSjOpXc

"This I Promise You"- N'Sync. Without a doubt my favorite N'Sync song. For those of you who have graced my presence on New Year's Eve in recent years, this song has always been one of my of karaoke favorites to ring in the new year. I still, however, can not figure out the group being in the middle of the Redwood Forest in the video- the bubbles just seem out of place there. This song always cracks me up also, because I always loved how John Lassiter would say "the angels flap their wings" when JC sings the bridge at 2:50 of the video. Also just a few random notes- Chris Kirkpatrick looks like my good friend Shane Conti. Joey Fatone has the most amazing 5 o'clock shadow, and yes Lance Bass definitely looks like Ellen DeGeneres.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6thmPrTxBtI

"I Can't Wait Another Minute"- Hi Five. I'm SO glad I finally found this video! These 5 teenagers from Waco, Texas had some moderate success in the early 90's, especially with this song. I always think it's hilarious to see the basketball game in this video- nothing says "I love you" like a game of 1 on 1. This is probably my favorite song on this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1xRW1CYpik

"Back Here"- BBMak. In 1999, we had had enough of American boy bands, so our good friends from across the pond came over and brought us a British boy band BBMak (Burns, Barry, and McNally) and this song which was played, in excess by MTV in 1999. Interesting fact about this video is that it was the American version but filmed in London. The European version was filmed in Los Angeles- go figure.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l95MMbls0GQ

"Swear It Again"- Westlife. When everyone in Europe saw how good BBMak had done, our Irish friends Westlife came on the scene with this 2000 hit. This video, however, is the European version. My question is- why even waste the money to make two big budget videos for the same freaking song? Spend that money on something else- but hey, that's just me. Just a random observation- if we had a contest and someone who knew nothing about music had to pick which boy band was definitely European just by looking at them, Westlife would be the runaway winner.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UaMsIJ4bR0

"We Fit Together"- O Town. Man I wanted these guys to be big. Erik Estrada just drips with cool, and I always thought Dan Miller was a good singer. However, as I've said before, these guys have the worst hair quite possibly of any band ever. People forget that long before P. Diddy and his thug teenagers in NYC, O-Town was on the original "Making the Band" in 2000. I really wanted these guys to do well, but time was not a friend for O-Town as they caught the boy band wave too late and eventually broke up in 2003. Bonus points for the hot chicks on the party boat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsgCeCEKixo

"Mr. Telephone Man"- New Edition. THE ORIGINAL boy band and YES Devon still looks like Ralph Tresvant even though he is 15 years old here.....LOL! This video cracks me up on so many levels. I love how they are talking to these two goofy telephone workers, and the white guy just stereotypes white people everywhere. Also, while it was never proven or even talked about, I am going to go out on a limb here and say that Bobby Brown was already on drugs at 17 (his age in the video). Seriously, I realize it was 1984, but look at the way he looks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTdxdr9pNnw

"Valentine Girl"- New Kids On The Block. Most people forget that New Kids were formed by New Edition founder Maurice Starr who wanted to make "A New Edition with white kids". This video, taken from their 1990 World Tour, shows how big they really were, and alot of people forget that for around 2 years, New Kids on the Block were the #1 act in the world. I always liked this song just because they actually let Danny sing. I have said several times that if New Kids on the Block would have come along a little later, they would have been the biggest group in history. I am glad they are doing well now and back together.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0CXBOiER_k

Bonus Video- "Please Don't Girl"- New Kids On The Block- just watch, you'll see why it's funny.

Late Night Music Part 40..........."You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover"

Ok, I think I am a tad bit obsessed with cover songs, seeing how this is the FOURTH "Late Night Music" focusing on songs people sing that other people originally recorded. Maybe it's the originality added to something already original. Maybe it's the comedy (intentional or unintentional). Maybe it's the sheer awesomeness of songs crossing genre lines and in many effects "crossing over". Maybe I'm just a dork- I'll take all of the above. With that being said I am truly fascinated by cover songs, particularly those you have to look hard for, ya know, the ones that are "album fillers" of "concert favorites" by bands that never had the guys to release it as a single just due to the inevitable task of being compared to the original. With that being said, in order to qualify for this list, the cover song had to be RECORDED IN A STUDIO (this would disqualify U2's version of "All Along The Watchtower"). Even though some live performances are used, they are still recorded by the band.

Also receiving votes in this category were "Sailing" by N'Sync, "Gin and Juice" by Hot Rod Circuit, and all of the Weird Al Yankovic polka medleys.

"At Your Best"- Aaliyah. Like alot of other hit songs, I had no idea this was a cover song until I did a little research. Originally recorded by the Isley Brothers in 1976, Aaliyah included it on her 1994 debut album "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number". The track was produced by R. Kelly and Aaliyah at the time was only 15 years old. Man, I hope her parents were around. Unfortunately, the only video released of this song was a "remix" featuring R. Kelly. For obvious reasons, I chose the original version here not only because it's better, but I have a "No Pedophiles" policy on "Late Night Music".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5i0XGs39BrQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVJzPiJufkY

"Fix You"- Secondhand Serenade. If you checked out any of my facebook statuses lately, you would see that I have recently gotten into California acoustic group Secondhand Serenade. While the overwhelming majority of their work is original this Coldplay cover is featured on their most recent album "A Twist In My Story". Like most cover songs, there is no clever video on this one, but simply a still photo of lead singer John Veseley.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpo0aZOYETI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skUJ-B6oVDQ

"My Hero"- Paramore. This Foo Fighters classic originally from the movie "Varsity Blues" is covered here by Franklin, Tennessee's Paramore, and was actually also a soundtrack song as it was featured on the soundtrack album for "Superman Returns". Lead singer Hayley Williams almost sounds like she was meant to sing this song. I am a sucker for rock songs covered and stripped down to acoustic versions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldzl7ijkHac
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVKDQgT_b-Y

"Emotion"- Destiny's Child. Yes! We finally get a cool video! This song featured on Destiny's Child 2001 album "Survivor" has always been one of my favorites, and honestly, Beyonce can sing this to me any time she wants! I love how Destiny's Child kept the same musical format as the Bee Gees (both being trios), and Beyonce in a way sounds a little bit like Robin Gibb. Does anyone else notice how skinny Kelly Rowland really is? I remember seeing her in person on "The Tonight Show" and thinking she looked anorexic. I mean don't get me wrong, she's a beautiful woman, but someone please give her some chicken or something. While this video is easily one of the best from 2001, it gets put over the hump by the bonus points it gains with Beyonce's mini skirt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWKdMmH0B-E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBgAj4cNee4

"Love Song"- Four Year Strong. Ok, these guys can't sing, but I love the idea. How cool is it when piano pop is turned into power guitar chords and punk rock? I also love when male bands do female songs. I would like to see Sara Bareilles try to play this song on piano with that drum part- can it be done?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNCgWxKUspI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qi7Yh16dA0w

"Don't Turn Around"- Ace of Base. Here's one that I actually knew was a cover (thanks to Casey Kasem). In 1994, Ace of Base was in a state of confusion that they were the next ABBA on the verge (in their own mind) of another "Scandinavian Invasion", but even covering this Tina Turner hit couldn't save them from fading into oblivion. This video is also very confusing- is she singing to the girl or to the guy? I am completely lost. However, Jenny Berggren (the brunette) is smoking hot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RYo0JpT410
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZu-Nf0yap0

"Africa"- Chris De Burgh. I love when a guy who only has one song ever pops up with something cool. Seriously, how many of you knew a single Chris De Burgh NOT called "Lady In Red"?????? LOL! That's what I thought! Anyway, Chris De Burgh does a rare practice of covering this Toto 1982 hit almost EXACTLY how it sounded, all the way down to the drum part. He's not only doing a cover, he's doing an impression.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugfzExMovXA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCca5mPMp9A

"Over My Head (Cable Car)"- A Day To Remember. Another punk rock group turning piano pop into a cover song for them. Great live performance here by this Florida band. I really like this version- I can really see it being on "Guitar Hero". This version was featured on the "Pop Goes Punk" compilation album.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfLJQZaIwps
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFRkpvvop3I

"Stronger"- 30 Seconds to Mars. We all know how I feel about Kanye West. With that being said, we also know how much I love hip hop covers into rock and we all know how much all of us love Jared Leto. Very interesting version here- Jared Leto gets more awesome the more I listen to him. I am very quickly becoming a very big 30 Seconds to Mars fan. Yes, this video is for you Scherer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrlXhpuLfeo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsO6ZnUZI0g

"I Wanna Love You"- The Maine. Another hip hop cover song covered by a rock group. What is it about Snoop Dogg that makes goofy white guys want to sing his songs? LOL! I wonder if Akon planned on his stripper filled video to be covered by abunch of nerdy white guys from Arizona? Infinite bonus points for lead singer John Cornelius O'Callahan even singing "Konvict...............Mus
ic". I don't think we'll see The Maine sign with Konvict Records anytime soon- don't think they have enough street cred. Also, thank God this is the "clean" version of this song........it's a family show.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_pmerpr5qs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJzF7H2e3Tw

"Jumper"- Bedlight for Blue Eyes. I almost have to say I like this version better than Third Eye Blind's original. Seriously.........I LOVE this guitar part. Stephan Jenkins is amazing, but he can't sing a song as mellow as it's performed here. Bedlight for Blue Eyes has since broken up but they definitely left a mark with this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERz8QbIkcws
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77RT_bSlVXc

"I Want It That Way"- Allister. Honestly, I have no idea whether or not these guys are being serious or if they are poking fun at the Backstreet Boys as this song is featured on the album "Dead Ends And Girlfriends" which also features a cover version of the theme song of the children's show "Fraggle Rock".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtuSpA4hmrk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fndeDfaWCg

"Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" AND "Stairway To Heaven"- Mary J. Blige. Words don't do these justice. However, just to qualify these two live performances, "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word", the Elton John classic, was recorded by MJB and featured on the soundtrack of "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason". Her rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" is featured on her newest album "Stronger With Every Tear", but this live version from Oprah is unreal.

I will always find an excuse to put up a picture of Beyonce
Hayley Williams is one hot rocker chick!
I think my prediction that these guys will never sign with Konvict music is pretty iron clad- don't you think so?
