Late Night Music Christmas Edition Part 153......."Christmas Songs"

I can't believe I've never done a Christmas song list before. I hope you all enjoy it, and Merry Christmas everyone.

Also receiving votes were "Who Could Imagine A King" by Whitney Houston, "Snowflakes of Love" by Toni Braxton, and "O Holy Night" by Destiny's Child. PLEASE NOTE- The song "The Night Santa Went Crazy" by "Weird Al" Yankovic was left off due to the recent tragedy in Connecticut. Out of respect to the victims, the song was removed from the list.

"This Gift"- 98 Degrees. 98 Degrees gave a great effort with this single from their 1999 Christmas album This Christmas with this being the lead single, which peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100. This single was actually re packaged as a Christmas single after being originally recorded as a pop standalone single earlier that year. I really enjoyed this Christmas album despite being released with little fanfare after the success of their album 98 Degrees and Rising. I hate to say it, but I think 98 Degrees was an R & B group who grouped into the boy band genre just due to their looks. They had a great sound, and always reminded me more of the 90's soul groups rather than the boy bands. Unfortunately, Nick Lachey letting his life be shown on TV has made him very un-R & B esque.

"You're Not Alone"- Boyz II Men. I love this song and this album! This track from Boyz II Men's 1993 Christmas album Christmas Interpretations helps complement one of the best Christmas albums you don't know about. In 1993, Boyz II Men was fresh off of the success of their debut album Cooleyhighharmony, but wasn't yet the household name that would come with their next album II. This album and song gave a great preview of the sounds that were going to come from Boyz II Men as they became one of the biggest acts in the world in the late 90's. This song was written by then label mate Brian McKnight, and an appearance on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" help the album top out at #19 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart.

"Christmas In Dixie"- Alabama. This southern classic was originally released in 1982 by Alabama, but was later included on their 1985 Christmas album Alabama Christmas, going to #35 on the Billboard Country Charts upon its initial release. This southern pride song has stayed a radio favorite for several years and is a staple at Christmas in many music outlets. No matter the time of year, the song was a regular on the band's live sets until their hiatus in 2004. Bonus points for the inclusion of Jackson, Mississippi in the lyrics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A8qAUAbqIo

"Step Into Christmas"- Elton John. This standalone single in 1973 was recorded during the Caribou sessions for Elton John and later included on the U.S. CD re-release. At that time, Elton John was on his unreal streak of seven consecutive #1 albums. This widely popular single debute at #23 on the British Singles Chart, and peaked at #1 on the special Billboard Christmas Charts, as Christmas songs could not be included on the regular Hot 100 at that time. I would also like to add that this easily the most obvious "fake playing" video ever. Just watch and see what I'm talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fjik78LapA

"Happy Christmas (War Is Over)"- John Lennon. John Lennon and Yoko Ono enlisted the help of the Harlem Community Choir to record this anti-Vietnam War/Christmas song in 1971, and released in the UK in 1972. This song is still very widely played, but I hate Yoko Ono so much it's hard to listen to anything with her on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN4Uu0OlmTg

"I'll Be Missing You Come Christmas"- New Kids On The Block. New Kids On The Block included this song as a "letter to Santa" on their 1990 Christmas Album Merry, Merry Christmas. While this song was never released as a single, this song was very popular, as seen by this fan made video. I always wondered how Jordan Knight could make his voice change sound almost like Barry Gibb. I actually this song could have been written better where it didn't have to sound so awkward.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYqW1RoktYA

"Little Saint Nick"- The Beach Boys. This single was released from the Beach Boys 1963 The Beach Boys Christmas Album. This single went to #3 on the special Billboard Christmas chart that was previously mentioned. This song has always cracked me up because it's just funny to think about a group full of surfer boys singing about the North Pole. Always cracked me up when it was used on the Coke commercials.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSynDh_K0EE

"This Christmas"- Donny Hathaway. Attention artist- STOP COVERING THIS SONG! This original version is the best and will not ever ever ever be topped! Please stop recording it! This song peaked at #11 on the Billboard Christmas Chart in 1970 when it was released as a standalone single. Ever since, artist of all genres have attempted to cover this song to the point that it has become so cliche I can actually grow tired of hearing a song that was so amazing in its original form by one of the greatest artists of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWmOnfcI-CA

"Tennessee Christmas"- Amy Grant and Vince Gill. In a very strange twist of irony, Amy Grant performs this song on The Nashville Network's Christmas special with her future husband. The only thing is that she wrote this song with her original husband Gary Chapman who sang background vocals on the original version in 1983 from her album A Christmas Album, which would prove to be one of her more popular albums. It would later go on to be certified platinum in 1989. I still wonder what Gary Chapman thinks when he hears this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOXqc7Tq6y0

"Wonderful Christmas Time"- Paul McCartney. I was super glad to see Paul McCartney do this song Saturday night on "Saturday Night Live". This 1979 Christmas single was McCartney's completely solo single in 8 years and just in time for the breakup of Wings later in the year. In a hilarious twist of irony, all of the members of the band appear in the video, yet none are on the recording. Very interesting. This still very popular Christmas song peaked at #6 on the British Singles Chart and #10 on the Billboard Christmas Charts that same year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9BZDpni56Y

"Christmas Lights"- Coldplay. This special 2010 single peaked at #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and showed the festive side of Coldplay, which even I admit I was shocked to see despite being a huge fan of the band. This super catchy video just really reminds of Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight", just without the weird video quailty and weird flying machines. As I watch this video and listen to this song again, I'm beginning to convince myself that Coldplay is incapable of producing a bad record.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1rYmzQ8C9Q

"Christmas Makes Me Cry"- Matthew West and Mandisa. Man what a powerful song and perfect duet match! This is a great live performance from Decatur, Illinois with Mandisa and Matthew West. This single was originally released in 2007, but then re-released in 2008 when it was included on Mandisa's album It's Christmas. In 2007, the song peaked at #3 on the Billboard Christian Charts. This song was fresh off of Mandisa's appearance on "American Idol" and was just a glimpse of the unbelievable things to come from one of the best female singers in the business today in any genre. This song, actually written by West, was cleverly written and cleverly performed. Matthew West really doesn't get enough credit for being one of the best songwriters in Christian music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSpjqgfhGPE

"Shake Up Christmas"- Train. Unlike most songs on this list, this song was actually released on a non-Christmas album and not released as a standalone single. This Coke Christmas song was included on Train's 2009 album Save Me, San Francisco and released as a single in 2010 where it peaked at #99 on the Billboard Hot 100, but not before being played to death on every Coke Christmas commercial every year. I'll always be a fan of Train, but Pat Monahan just looks so freaking weird sometimes!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-8VCL4uSUc

"Better Days"- Goo Goo Dolls. I have to admit, I had no idea that the Goo Goo Dolls sang this song until recently even though I had heard it 20000 times. Seriously, didn't you think they disappeared too? Originally for a Target Christmas album, this single was included on their 2006 album Let Love In where it peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100. In an unbelievably rare occurrence for mainstream music, the song makes a very open allusion to Jesus Christ, perhaps showing the faith of Johnny Rzeznik. I really like this song, as it turns out to be a "comeback" song of sorts for the band, as they were one of my favorite bands in high school.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-kHleNYIDc

"Grown Up Christmas List"- Amy Grant. Here is another song I am begging artists everywhere to stop covering! Amy Grant's 1992 version from her SECOND Christmas album Home For Christmas has been covered by seemingly every female singer who wants to release a Christmas album. I am begging them all to stop because this version will simply not be topped. This song began Amy Grant's successful yet brief transition into mainstream music when it peaked at #17 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart paving the way for her release of Heart In Motion the following year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmF2rsDHOZc

"Mary, Did You Know?"- Cee Lo Green. I have to admit. I really don't care for Cee Lo other than his comedic factor. I've always found him overrated and very overhyped as well as very annoying. However, this cover of Mark Lowry's Christmas gem is rather fantastic. This track is included on his most recent album Cee-Lo's Magic Moment which is currently at #25 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Charts. I never thought that Cee-Lo had it in him for a song like this to be so spiritual and serious about anything, but it goes to show that even I will give credit when credit is due.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1ptNwE7K8o

"The Gift"- Jim Brickman featuring Colin Raye and Susan Ashton. Now just changing genres a TAD bit. This title track to Jim Brickman's 1997 Christmas Album peaked at #3 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart and quite possibly was not listened to anyone under 40. All jokes aside, this was an interesting combo. I'd like to see these two make an entire album together. Jim Brickman needed more singing on his albums as well. Dude has made piano skills, but why not more singing? All of this songs that feature vocals turn out to be good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJDmQI1Euk8

"Do They Know It's Christmas?"- Band Aid. You knew it was coming. I actually thought Kool and the Gang was British for a short time after seeing this video. Why did they confuse us like that?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EJWEXrykdQ

"Do They Know It's Christmas?"-Band Aid 20. The 20 year later version which features Bono unable to let go of the past. I'll let anyone who can name every artist in this video name my next list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwAiaz5zN-E

"The Christmas Song"- Nat King Cole. For my money, I don't think anyone ever ever ever did this song as well. Again, please stop covering this song. You will never be as good as Nat King Cole. This 1946 recording was so well known it was actually included into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__kQ1PCP6B0

"Last Christmas"- Wham!. Whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8gmARGvPlI

"Christmas Tonight"- Dave Barnes and Hillary Scott. Man what an awesome combo featuring one of my favorite ever and one of Mississippi's best ever! I love when I can include Dave Barnes on here! This awesome duet with Barnes and Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum went to #9 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart in 2010 off of Dave Barne's album Very Merry Christmas which itself peaked at #80 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. I was fortunate enough to see Dave Barnes perform this song with Drew Holcomb's wife at his 2010 holiday concert in Memphis.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaDsQ8S7dsY

"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas"- Ella Fitzgerald. My favorite Christmas song by one of the most underappreciate and still awesome singers of all time. Can't get much better than this. I absolutely adore Ella Fitzgerald.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C9kDVKOrX4

"The Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth"- Bing Crosby and David Bowie. I actually included this odd duet about 140 entries ago, and here it is again. This single was included on Bing Crosby's 1977 TV Special "Bing Crosby's Merrie Old Christmas", recorded just 5 weeks before Crosby's death, and airing November 30, 1977 on CBS. David Bowie re released this single again in 1982 as a standalone single and included it on his Greatest Hits album in 1993. In an unbelievable story behind the song, Bowie appeared on the special to "normalize" his career and because his mother was such a huge fan of Crosby. Crosby himself also admitted that he wasn't too familiar with Bowie, but that his children liked him. In the funniest part of all, Bowie made it no secret that he hated "The Little Drummer Boy" and wanted a different song. In response, "Peace On Earth" was written to complement the song. Wow. It still gave us a great Christmas memory.

Late Night Music Part 152....."I Still Can't Seem To Get Out From Under These Cover Songs!"

I used to limit my love of cover song lists to only cover songs that were recorded on albums, but some of the best cover songs are recorded from live performances and are done strictly to honor the original artist for creating an inspirational track that in some cases, sets the standard for many years to come. One of these days, you guys are really gonna understand how much I am obsessed with cover songs.

All covers songs here include the original artist with the covering artist. In another rare occurence, all songs receiving votes were included in this list.

"Marry You"- Queen of Hearts (originally by Bruno Mars). I could listen to these Canadian angels sing all night! I love how they can have so much fun playing the part of brides, not take themselves seriously, but still make a cover sound so awesome compared to the original! I love Bruno Mars, but this song has always seemed like more of a group song than a solo song. It's also always seemed more like a female song too. I like how QOH makes this song sexy plus silly and add their own spice to this song making it really stand out. The original version was released on Bruno Mars Doo-Wops and Hooligans album in 2011 and peaked at #85 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was famously covered by the cast of "Glee" in the wedding episode.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lqF_huno40

"What I Am"- Naya Marie (originally by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians). Canada's other best kept secret puts on a spectacular effort here with this cover that blows away the original! Naya Marie is gonna be a star just because she's so diverse. Her video and song variety seriously reminds me of almost like a Mary J. Blige as far as diversity in her music. She also picked a great song to cover here, as she usually does. And like usual, she does it better than the original, which still leaves me baffled as to why Naya Marie is not an international superstar yet. This song was the only major hit for the future Mrs. Paul Simon and her band on their 1988 album Shooting Rubberbands At The Stars when it peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nOD79nMHMw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDl3bdE3YQA

"White Blank Page"- Taylor Swift (originally by Mumford and Sons). You can say whatever you want about Taylor Swift, and yes I admit she's easy to make fun of, but her raw talent is undeniable as proven here in this stripped down session on BBC Radio's "Live 1 Lounge". Her guitar playing is seriously underrated, and she does an outstanding job of making this song so much her own while keeping it very close to the original. This super popular track off of Mumford and Sons debut album Sigh No More was surprisingly never released as a single despite its overwhelming popularity. Taylor Swift is probably one of my favorite cover artists just because she pays so much respect to other artists by doing songs that define that artist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO7FkUZhLk0

"Time After Time"- Eva Cassidy (originally by Cyndi Lauper). For some reason Cyndi Lauper is just so fun to cover (we'll actually see more of her later). This unreal cover of Lauper's ballad is given new life on several levels here by the late Washington, D.C. singer Eva Cassidy. This track, which was the album's title track, was released on her posthumous album in 2000 after her passing due to cancer in 1996. I listen to this song and I wonder how people like this with great talent never become near as famous as the original artist who was nothing but a sideshow with stupid hair. Despite this, this track shot to worldwide fame and #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984 off of Lauper's debut album "She's So Unusual". The track was also nominated for the Grammy for Song of the Year while Lauper took home the award for Best New Artist the same year. I have to admit though, I first heard this cover version during an episode of "Private Practice" this season.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdQY7BusJNU

"Ordinary World"- Red (originally by Duran Duran). I always like when Christian bands cover non-Christian songs just because it does two things. First, it shows that Christian bands aren't oblivious to the mainstream music scene like some people assume. This shows that they are aware of the talented bands and good tracks that are out there. Also, it gives mainstream music possibly a new meaning. Who would have ever put this song in a religious context before a Christian band covered it? I think you can make a great point that this could have been a Christian song from the beginning. Interesting thought. This single was included on Red's 2009 album Innocence and Instinct that was nominated for Best Gospel Rock Album at that year's Grammys. The single peaked at #10 on the Billboard Christian Rock Charts. The original by Duran Duran was on their self-titled 1993 comeback album peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 famously putting Simon LeBon's hair back in style for a few months several years after we thought they dropped off the earth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQeq_T_2VE8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDLiVwpv89s

"Closing Time"- General Ghost (originally by Semisonic). Very cool cover here. I also heard this version on "Private Practice". I'm telling you that show has a great soundtrack! I'm sorry it's leaving us this spring :(. This Nashville duo adds a super techno twist to one of the best 1990's rock anthems ever. Despite what most of you are thinking, this song is actually being born. Really listen to the lyrics, it is completely about a woman giving birth to a child. This song famously made Semisonic over night sensations when it peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 off of their album Feeling Strangely Fine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cKDjAcg6kc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGytDsqkQY8

"Take On Me"- Sara Bareilles (originally by A-ha). I always felt like I knew a secret when I was into Sara Bareilles before she was big. I'm really glad she made it big because she definitely deserves it. This stripped down acoustic cover of the A-ha classic and one of my karaoke go to songs is super creative and I'm blown away how she can make it completely different from a song we all thought was destined to stay in the 80's. I'm pretty sure this is some sort of bonus track, as I've found it on a few downloading sites, but it does not appear on any of her albums. I really think it should. This song famously made A-ha our favorite Norwegians when they were on top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985 from their album Hunting High and Low.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TH3QiyUoSQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914

"Our Love"- Mary J. Blige (originally by Natalie Cole). Is there anything Mary J. Blige can't do? Mary took on this Natalie Cole song on her 1997 breakout album Share My World which also featured another cover song "Natural Woman" on the UK version of the album. This song closed out what would be her best album to that point, which also was nominated for the Grammy for Best R & B Album. Don't get me wrong, I really like Natalie Cole, and this was one of her better songs, but the amount of soul and passion Mary brings to any song is going to blow anything else away. I've said it several times, but I think Mary J may be the best cover artist just because she can do absolutely any song from any genre and absolutely crush it. No other artist has ever been able to do that on her level. Her ability to pay homage to the original artist and yet still make every track original is something that takes true talent. The original version by Natalie Cole off her 1977 album Thankful went to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard R & B Singles Chart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDqvDWpUSQ0

"As We Lay"- Kelly Price (originally by Shirley Murdock). In a great turn of irony, Shirley Murdock plays Kelly Price's mom in this video talking a heartbroken and recently much slimmed down Kelly Price out of her adulterous ways after originally recording the song. Pretty cool on Murdock's part if you ask me. This track and big budget video featuring Vivica A. Fox reached #64 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the former Mariah Carey backup singer in 2000 off of her album Mirror Mirror and earned Price a Grammy nomination for Best Female R & B Performance. This would be Price's last brush with the top, despite giving an addition to Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida with a stunning performance of "The Gods Love Nubia". I hate that because she definitely has an amazing voice. She actually performed this song with Murdock at the 2011 Essence Music Fest. Wow, I smell a bonus video! Shirley Murdock made this her biggest hit in 1986 off of her debut album Shirley Murdock! when this song went to #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htVUHrDJqeI

"Time Will Reveal"- Boyz II Men (originally by DeBarge). Man I am so ready for Boyz II Men to make a huge comeback! This acapella version of the DeBarge hit was included on their first Michael McCrary-less album Throwback Vol. 1 in 2004. Few groups have ever been able to sing this on tune and blend this well, and their true raw musicianship is often overshadowed. I am glad to say I saw Boyz II Men in 1998 live at the height of their popularity, but they will always be a group I would love to see perform. Boyz II Men is also a great example of how groups can have loyalty and stay together for several years. Ready to feel old? Boyz II Men burst on to the scene in 1991! During their entire tenure, they have had Nathan Morris act as business manager, not allowing any outside firms or agencies manage the group's finances. Talk about trust! This original track was included on DeBarge's 1983 album In A Special Way and peaked at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 just as DeBarge was peaking in popularity in the mid 80's.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PGc9GsASrw

"Message In A Bottle"- John Mayer (originally by The Police). This one has always been a favorite of mine. This famous cover was included on John Mayer's live DVD Concert Any Given Thursday recorded in Birmingham, Alabama in 2002 to accompany his album Room For Squares. John Mayer I think can strip down any song, play it with blues guitar licks and make it super cool. This original by The Police was included on their 1979 album Regatta De Blanc and went to #1 on the British Singles Chart and #74 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmYys-ZjNrg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbXWrmQW-OE

"Boyz In Da Hood"- Dynamite Hack (originally by Eazy E). This Texas band that uses a "Caddyshack" marijuana reference as their band name boosted their street cred by covering this Eazy E classic on their 2000 album Superfast. I think this video is hilarious because it really shows how stupid most white people look even trying to rap with rock music playing on the track. Super funny! I am gonna also say that no other band has ever found a way to include a Beatles song into a rap cover and make it work. That is if they even tried. The popularity of this video on MTV helped this song peak at #12 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. This famous original recording was one of the first gangsta rap tracks included on Eazy E's 1986 album N.W.A. and the Posse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIo81Fk6J5g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGeNDnYcQOA

"How To Save A Life"- Alicia Keys (originally by The Fray). I love when artists cover a song for no other reason than they like the song and want to honor the artist. That's what Alicia Keys does here on a performance from BBC's "Radio 1 Live Lounge". I'd really like to see Alicia Keys put this on an album because I really think the song fits her, especially with her piano playing skills. I think Alicia would like to cover more songs just from listening to her previous albums, but she writes so many good songs, there is no room on her albums. This title track from The Fray's 2004 debut album rode the rise of popularity from it's inclusion on "Grey's Anatomy" to peak at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3PRmu0tr6k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjVQ36NhbMk

"Promise This"- Adele (originally by Cheryl Cole). Very interesting one here. I think Adele takes X Factor winner Cheryl Cole to school on this one. This "Radio 1 Live Lounge" performance completely changes the pace and mood of this song that had recently taken the UK by storm and brings it down about 6 notches to make it a beautiful musical creation by maybe the hottest act on the planet right now. I realize Adele is British, but her singing voice and talking voice are probably the most opposite sounding sounds of all time. This song went to #1 on the British Singles Chart for Cheryl Cole off her 2004 album Messy Little Raindrops.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7Mhkai3bjE

"Fix You"- Lizzy King (originally by Coldplay). Sometimes you just find a song that is awesome and have to include it. This California songstress took my breath away with one of my favorite songs ever. Chris Martin knew what he was doing when he wrote this song, and Lizzy King knew what she was doing when she brought me to tears with this emotional cover. For more on Lizzy King check out her website www.lizzyking.com. This song needs no intro- I've had it on here how many times?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkwPpbI8nxM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI-o25K6B-E

"Skinny Love"- Sophie Madeleine (originally by Bon Iver). This interesting cover was included on Sophie Madeleine's "30 Covers In 30 Days" series on youtube. This forgotten gem by Bon Iver is done wonderfully by Sophie and is masterfully done on ukulele which was a great idea for this song! This New York songtress looks so innocent and oblivious but is quite the talented artist! She reminds me SO much of Nicki Bluhm! For more on Sophie Madeleine check out her website www.sophiemadeleine.com. This song from Bon Iver's 2008 album For Emma, Forever Ago saw some success in Europe despite always being a fan favorite by Bon Iver fanatics.

"Good Time"- Sam Tsui and Elle Winter (originally by Owl City and Carley Rae Jepsen). I almost didn't include this one, but I have to admit that this was pretty clever. I know how you guys feel about CRJ, but just give Elle Winter a chance ok? Sam Tsui is so freaking awesome its seriously not fair. He's the Bo Jackson of music, because he does it 100% as a "hobby". I wish I had a hobby I was this good at. I think Elle Winter is a good addition to this song, and I think it's cool Sam Tsui is pushing a young up and coming artist, as she appeared on this season's "The Next Big Thing" on The Disney Channel. The only disappointing about this video is that I was expecting another unworldly mashup by Sam Tsui like he is so well known for. This song written by Relient K front man Matt Thiessen appeared on Owl City's latest album The Midsummer Station and Carly Rae Jepsen's Kiss and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 this summer.

"I Won't Give Up"- Jayesslee (originally by Jason Mraz). I realize that seemingly everyone is covering this song right now, but I chose this Australian duo as my favorite. They make this song seem so effortless and harmonize on a rather hard song to harmonize on. I like the small changes made to this song, and I imagine it probably made it easier to sing. This track is included on Jayesslee's EP now available on iTunes. For more on Jayesslee, check out their website www.jayesslee.com. This song has become Jason Mraz's go to song and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year on his album Love Is A Four Letter Word.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI9rPwl1KuM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1-4u9W-bns

"New York State Of Mind"- Oleta Adams (originally by Billy Joel). Oleta Adams is one that never gets enough credit for being a true soul diva! I would tell people to not even waste their time covering Billy Joel, but she really does this song justice! After giving a great effort of Elton John's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" in 1991, she brought home this gem in 1993 on her album Evolution. I would even venture to say that the piano jazz licks are more fitting for this song than Billy Joel originally wrote in 1976 for his album Turnstiles. I was shocked that this song was never released as a single for either artist.

"Free Ride"- Audio Adrenaline (originally by Edgar Winter Group). Another Christian band recording a mainstream song- see what I mean? This song was on Audio Adrenaline's 1996 album Bloom which peaked at #77 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and was the summit of their popularity when they were arguably the #1 Christian Rock group in the world. I saw them live in 1999 in Jackson and it was one of the better concerts I saw. The original by The Edgar Winter Group peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973 from their album They Only Come Out At Night, and is featured on the soundtrack to the very addicting video game MLB 11 the Show.

"Turn The Page"- Metallica (originally by Bob Seger). I've always been kinda on the fence with Metallica, but I was quite impressed that they covered such an off genre song for them and made it awesome. This heavier version of the Bob Seger classic was included on their 1998 album Garage, Inc. and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart. The music video starring Ginger Lynn Allen took a much darker feel than the Seger song focusing on the life of a hooker rather than a musician, as the song would lead you to believe. Despite the overwhelming popularity of the song from Seger's album Back In '72, this song never touched the chart, but remains quite possibly his most famous song as well as a karaoke favorite.

"November Rain"- Amos Lee (originally by Guns N' Roses). Talk about one I never thought I'd see covered, especially by Amos Lee. But I really think he did this song more than enough justice! This is a great live performance from the Philadelphia Academy of Music that I think, from the looks of it, was completely unexpected by the audience. I'm most impressed that this cover is the exact freaking length of the original and makes it the same almost to the point. Guns N' Roses was a talented band, so that in itself makes it super hard. Their songs are some of the hardest to play and sing that I've ever heard. The song from Guns N' Roses 1992 album Use Your Illusion I peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 where it became not only the longest song to ever reach the Top 10, but the first song in the history of the Billboard Charts to have a song with a guitar solo of over one minute reach the Top 10.

"This Woman's Work"- Maxwell (originally by Kate Bush). Here is one that I had no idea was a cover! And I have to say, I think Maxwell blows Kate Bush away with his version. His famous two versions in 1997 (MTV Unplugged) and his 2001 (Now) became one of this most well known songs and famous was included in the soundtrack for the 2002 film "Love and Basketball". Maxwell's version would peak at #58 on the Billboard Hot 100 and would be his last recording for nearly 7 years before he released BLACKSummer's Night in 2009. Kate Bush released her version on her 1989 album The Sensual World where is peaked at #25 on the British Singles Chart.

"Angel Of Mine"- Monica (originally by Eternal). Here is another one that I know NONE OF YOU knew was a cover. I hate that I didn't get a chance to include Eternal in the last list, because they were widely considered the British answer to En Vogue just with their look and style. Monica recorded a cover of their version just a year after them and included it on her 1998 album The Boy Is Mine where it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Not gonna lie, I've always had a thing for Monica. Any time this woman sings, I'm gonna listen! Once I hear the original version of this song, I am even more impressed because Eternal makes it really sound like a group oriented song, but Monica really makes it work with just her with a very small amount of background vocals- very impressive! Eternal released this song just a year earlier in the UK where it went to #4 on the British Singles Chart and was included as a new track on their Greatest Hits compilation album.

"Somebody That I Used To Know"- Mayday Parade featuring Vic Fuentes (originally by Gotye featuring Kimbra). Man this one right here! I'm so glad I get to include Mayday Parade again! This ridiculously awesome cover was included on the most recent Punk Goes series album Punk Goes Pop Vol. 5 and was a super clever song to include! Mark my words that Mayday Parade will be a globally known band soon. I am so impressed with their sound and their talent. I think if they do this song live enough times it will really help their following. I would love to do this song karaoke- I've already danced around the room twice listening to it. This song really needs no introduction, as it's nominated for this year's Grammy for Record Of The Year by Gotye from his album Making Mirrors where it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Girls Just Want To Have Fun"- The Maine (originally by Cyndi Lauper). The Maine has got to be one of the funniest bands out there. The last time I included them on a cover song list, it was "I Wanna Love You" by Akon. Now, after building up their street cred, they get in touch with their feminine side with this Cyndi Lauper "classic". (yes I do realize that I have now included two Cyndi Lauper songs on this list- talk about a first AND a last!). This creative cover was also included on the previously mentioned Punk Goes Pop Vol. 5. This cover is so much better than Cyndi Lauper's it's not even funny and it doesn't even make sense for the gender of the band singing it! This original also from Lauper's debut album She's So Unusual somehow went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Hearts A Mess"- Missy Higgins (originally by Gotye). Ok, since I have two Cyndi Lauper songs, I can have two Gotye songs right? I am so glad I got to include Australian artist Missy Higgins with a great stripped down live version of one of Gotye's more obscure songs. This great rendition was included on the Australian radio show "Triple J" in it's "Like A Version" segment. Missy Higgins voice is just so mysterious, powerful, and soulful all rolled into one. I absolutely love listening to this woman perform. This song was included on Gotye's 2007 album Like Drawing Blood where it only charted in Belgium. His very interesting video makes me think I'm watching something that wants to be a part of "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

"Pricetag"- The Wombats (originally by Jessie J featuring B.o.B.). Another interesting cover from the same radio show by Australian band The Wombats doing Jessie J's catchy tune. They look pretty embarassed to be doing it, but it really is one of those songs that sticks with you. The track from her debut album Who You Are went to #1 on the British Singles Chart and peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Late Night Music Part 151......."British Soul"

We often tend to think of R & B music as an American genre, and to an extent we are correct, but the presence of soul music in the United Kingdom is undeniable. Unfortunately, most of you will never hear any of these artists, and you're missing out on some great music! Tonight's list hopefully puts a small bug in some ears for these immensely talented artists from across the pond.

Obviously, to receive votes in this category, the artist or band had to be British in the soul genre. All songs receiving votes were included in this category.

"Domino"- Jessie J. Starlet Jessie J took the world by storm with her debut album Who You Are in 2011. This third single proved to be her biggest hit on the album topping out at #1 on the British Singles Chart and #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. According to Jessie J, this sogn was heavily influenced by Prince and Whitney Houston, two of her biggest musical influences growing up. I have to admit that I also like most music critics originally thought this song was Katy Perry, and the resemblance is near uncanny, but watching this video its obvious that Jessie J has a great style all her own. The success of this song included with a memorable performance at the 2011 VMAs helped the album peak at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart.

"Tears Dry On Their Own"- Amy Winehouse. I have to admit I was never a huge fan of Amy Winehouse, and actually grew tired of her overplayed songs early in her career. However, this single from her 2007 album Back To Black was always a song of hers I really enjoyed. This song was written by Winehouse, but contains a sample of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in the background. Maybe that's why this song is so awesome. This song peaked at #16 on the British Singles Chart and produced this pretty entertaining video despite Winehouse's ridiculous as always hair. I bet she spent more time doing that hair than I spend at work in a day. Looks absolutely ridiculous. That being said, Amy Winehouse definitely had talent despite her well publicized issues. I would like to think that more songs like this would have come out if she would have stayed off the drugs. Another talent wasted.

"Proud"- Heather Small. This title track from London songstress Heather Small's 2000 album was re-released in 2005 with this video here as the official theme song for the bid for the London 2012 Summer Olympics bid committee. I guess it had the magic touch huh? The song was also re-released again a year later when it was included on the soundtrack for "The Biggest Loser". Small has performed the song for several other events in the UK, making this a favorite for national events in the country. The original version peaked at #16 on the British Singles Chart with this version peaking at #33 5 years later. Heather Small defiinitely has a distinctive voice- kinda reminds me of Heather Headley.

"Turning Tables"- Adele. It was hard to pick which song to include from Adele, but I chose one that has flown kinda under the radar. I can't believe that this song off of her critically acclaimed mega album 21 wasn't more popular like other songs from the album. This gem peaked at #62 on the British Singles Chart and #63 on the Billboard Hot 100. How that happened I'll never understand. The video here is a breathtaking performance from Royal Albert Hall. I love how Adele can have on a plain black dress with just a microphone and be more entertaining and elegant than most of the crap we have on American radio now. Just goes to show you how far talent can really take you. 21 would go on to win the Grammy for Best Album as well as go to #1 in basically every country that has an albums chart.

"Justify Me"- Nate James. If you ever wanna hear this song, come in Pan Asia, as it's on rotation on a near nightly basis. This awesome ballad from his debut 2005 album Set The Tone failed to make much of a splash on the charts, but the album peaked at #11 on the British R & B Albums Charts. This video is an interesting look for Nate, as he usually has the Maxwell fro going on. Maybe it would have worked here in this video. I could listen to this song literally all day but I have to admit, the video is hard to watch just because of that lip ring he's rocking on his bottom lip. How does that not hurt like heck while you're singing? By the way, I'm always a big fan of random people walking up and singing backup in your video coming literally from nowhere- so cool!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTMp8_3i0BY

"Blood Like Lemonade"- Morcheeba. This is one group in Great Britain that never gets enough love! This title track from their latest album is written as an ode to vampire hunting. I wish more R & B groups would write songs this creative with lyrics. Not saying that soul music isn't creative enough, but this song's lyrical depth literally blows my mind! This album and video marks the return of former lead singer Skye Edwards who had left the band originally in 2003. In a pretty hilarious twist, the band name Morcheeba literally means "the way of cannabis". You can't make stuff like that up. I really hope Morcheeba regains the popularity they had in the early part of the 2000's as one of the UK's premiere soul groups. Always been a favorite of mine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyRxTTegjXM

"Down"- Jay Sean. I really love this song, but I have to admit I wish Jay Sean was on a different label. It's unbelievable how much I can't stand Lil' Wayne. SO overrated! That being said, this song is super catchy and is one that you find yourself listening to over and over sometimes. Despite the presence of the annoying one LW, this song from his 2009 album All Or Nothing peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on the British Singles Chart. Jay Sean is one of those guys that is so cool you just want to punch him. Why can't I have that kind of swag?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUbpGmR1-QM

"I Will Be"- Leona Lewis. Talk about another one hard to find from one artist! Ever since her win on the UK's version of "The X Factor" Leona Lewis has been a true superstar in every since of the word. Seen here is a great performance from "The Late Show with David Letterman" promoting this song from her debut album Spirit. This song was actually a cover originally recorded by Avril Lavigne. Seems to be something Leona Lewis is good at. Despite the promoting and a music video featuring "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford, this song peaked at only #66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and only #160 on the British Single Chart. No matter where she is, Leona Lewis just always looked poised and passionate about her song. I absolutely love hearing her sing!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAicQc_Is4g

"Shine"- Laura Izibor. Okay I cheated a little bit on this one since Laura Izibor is Irish, but most of you don't know the difference anyway, so why not? This awesome song from Laura Izibor's 2009 debut album Let The Truth Be Told peaked at #2 in Japan, where it saw its most success. This video is super clever with the changing of eras done so well. Izibor said that this album was heavily influenced by James Brown and Aretha Franklin, and those elements are pretty evident here. While this album was a huge hit in her native Ireland, it actually peaked at #27 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Laura Izibor seems to be like an artist I'd love to see live. Also, some of you might recognize Izibor from her role as Erin Macree on "One Tree Hill".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=equvoqUT1VM

"American Boy"- Estelle featuring Kanye West. I really wish this song wasn't so awesome because it is unbelievable how much I hate Kanye, but even he couldn't ruin this great track by Estelle. This song from Estelle's album Shine got Estelle three Grammy nominations including Song Of The Year. The duo took home the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. This single went to #1 on the British Singles Chart and #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Estelle has a very distinctive voice and this is yet another song that stays stuck in your head.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ic5vxw3eijY

"Mercy"- Duffy. You know you thought this song was Amy Winehouse too. I know I did. This single from Duffy's 2008 debut album Rockferry shot to #1 in the UK and peaked at #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. Duffy said that she loves this song so much that sings it several times a day and that it's "like having sex every time". I'm gonna go ahead and say that that is the only time an artist has ever described a song that way. I do think it's kinda cool though that an artist would refer to their own music that way. Watching this video, you'd think that it was the soundtrack of a British movie. Just seems that way to me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7ZEVA5dy-Y

"Picking Up The Pieces"- Paloma Faith. This lead single from Paloma Faith's second album Fall To Grace was, according to Faith, "written with pain and agony". I'd tend to agree listening to this song. Watching this video I'm kinda reminded of Madonna- see what I mean? Also some elements of Amy Winehouse in there. Is this the one who will carry on her legacy? This single wound up being Paloma Faith's first Top 10 single peaking at #7 on the British Singles Chart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijel4Vcqd9g

"Dynamite"- Taio Cruz. Ok I admit I'm pushing it on this one, but it's super cool! This single from Taio Cruz's 2010 album Rokkstar shot to #1 in the UK and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. I realize that there is nothing special about this song, but how can you not love it? Even as bad of a dancer as I am, this song makes me want to do nothing but dance, and I know none of you want to see that! I'll just leave it to your imagination.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vysgv7qVYTo

"Breathe Easy"- Blue. British boy band Blue never had an American presence and I kinda wish they would have. Talk about a talented group! Way better than One Direction! This song from their 2004 album Guilty went to #4 on the British Singles Chart, and #1 in Italy, where the band was wildly popular. The only problem with boy bands is that they don't have longevity because you always grow out of that persona. Blue has recently gotten back together, and I hope they are successful, but I don't see them recapturing their magic they had with songs like this. Watching this video reminded me though of getting on the bus from the left side while I was in the UK. That still blows my mind.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Jo7jG--IwU

"Stronger"- Sugababes. Wrap up Madonna, Lil' Kim, The Pussycat Dolls, and Salt n Peppa, and you'll get Sugababes. This second incarnation of the band seen here in 2002 from their album Angels With Dirty Faces. These self-professed dirty angels peaked at #7 on the British Singles Chart with this hit in 2002. I never understood why Sugababes never made a splash in the United States as much as this country loves sex driven music and videos. This song and video is no exception. Sugababes has had more lineup changes than just about any band I've ever heard of, with only Heidi Range (the blonde) still a member of the band today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ7iZ-cxyA0

"Neva Soft"- Ms Dynamite. I was kinda unsure about including this one, but this is song is really unique. I have to say I don't think I've ever heard a song like this before. This standalone 2011 single peaked at #32 on the British Singles Chart. Ms Dynamite is a Jamaican-Brit who really incorporates reggae into her music even with a little techno going on. What a great combination!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfrZ5k6bwC4

"Black Coffee"- All Saints. This very interesting song from All Saints second album Saints and Sinners shot to #1 on the British Singles Chart where it would be their final time in that spot. All Saints had more talent, but they still really remind of the Spice Girls. Shaznay Lewis definitely brought some soul to the bunch with her impressive lead vocals on this song. All Saints should have smiled more though- they always look so mysterious and mean in their videos. This video really makes me think I'm watching an M. Night Shymalan movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2WP1yNypHo

"I Am What I Am"- Beverley Knight. Where in the world have I been? This woman blew my socks off with this unreal performance from the opening ceremonies from the 2012 Paralympics in London. The British Whitney Houston as she's called, absolutely takes this stage by storm here. I don't know even know how to describe the awesomeness of this performance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBouzggqaKk

"It's Not That Easy"- Lemar. Lemar strikes me as another guy who could do really well with an American presence. This song just drips with Musiq Soulchild, John Legend, and Anthony Hamilton rolled into one! This lead single from his 2006 album The Truth About Love peaked at #7 on the British Singles Chart. Interestingly, Lemar rose to fame after finishing third on the British talent show "Fame Academy". He's another artist I really think I'd enjoy in person.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cNxPgqWGrw

"Superstar"- Jamelia. Can someone please tell me how she's dancing in those stilettos? This single from Jamelia's 2003 album Thank You proved to be her biggest single to date peaking at #3 on the British Singles Chart. Why was this song not released in the United States? Everything about this song and video just screams American- even with the Yankees hat. I love this woman's voice! For some reason though, this video is reminding of that Hey Monday video "Don't Want To Dance". Just feels like she's jumping at me through the screen like Cassadee Pope did.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPQ_PnRPOXw

"What Did I Do?"- Sophie Delila. I swear I can never get enough of this song! I know she's French, but since she's based in London I'm counting it! I'm so honored to have Sophie Delila as a twitter follower, as I'm looking forward to seeing this song become even more popular and see her career blossom into even more of a great one! This is an unbelievable performance of her latest single now available on iTunes!
