Late Night Music Part 113........"The Wheels On The Bus Go Round and Round"

It wasn't until now that I realized how much influence something as simple as a wheel could have on songwriting. It's really amazing what all wheels can be used to represent.

In order to receive votes in this category the SONG TITLE had to have the word "wheel" in it. Also receiving votes in this category were "Hell On Wheels" by Fu Manchu, "Human Wheels" by John Mellencamp, "Helen Wheels" by Wings, "Big Brother Wheels" by The Buzzcocks, and "Wonder Wheel" by Dama Nilz.

"Spinning Wheels"- Angel Taylor. This song, which plays 3 times a day in Sprint, was featured on Angel Taylor's debut album "Love Travels" which scored the single "Like You Do" and gained Taylor notoriety on VH1 in their 2010 "On The Know- Artists On The Rise" promotion. The lyrics to this song are amazing, and they got lost in the soulfulness of Taylor's amazing voice. Many people have even gone on to call Taylor the "black Colbie Caillat" just due to their similarity of voices and styles. Stay tuned to bonus videos for a great acoustic version of this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=790DIbDaYqY

"Watching the Wheels"- John Lennon. In 1975, John Lennon had a very public and very controversial "retirement" from music to be a househusband to his wife Yoko Ono and to care for their new son Sean. Many people criticized the move just due to the fact that many critics complained that John Lennon had already abandoned his other son, Julian (an accusation that I think has much merit). The Beatles "Hey Jude" was actually written for Julian, but was written by Paul McCartney. I think that John Lennon was trying to change his image and like most of the other Beatles, thought he had accomplished everything he could accomplish up to that point. However, in 1980, John Lennon famously came out of retirement and released his album "Double Fantasy". The album, which included this song as an "answer" to as to why he spent 4 years in seclusion, was his first album since 1976 and his first time with original songs since 1975. The album was famous for being his last album, as Lennon was murdered a mere 3 weeks after the album's release. The album went on to win the 1981 Grammy for Album of the Year, with this song, the 3rd and final single from the album, peaking at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Wheels"- Foo Fighters. Is it even possible for these guys to make a bad song? This song was recorded for their 2009 "Greatest Hits" album, and premiered at the White House for July 4th that year at a celebration for the military. Also, I've said it 100 times, but drummer Taylor Hawkins seriously looks like the Rated R Superstar Edge. I want to call him Adam Copeland so bad. Critics of this video called it "The Fray meets Weezer", and I surprisingly think the exact thing. This song was Foo's first appearance on the charts since 2007, peaking at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONkiLR5Ehys

"Wheels Within Wheels"- Cynic. This song from Cynic's 2010 EP "Re-Traced" makes me feel like I'm watching "Tron" or an old Max Headroom Coca-Cola commercial. This song is different, but then again so is most of Cynic's electro music. Cynic is an anomaly in the fact their first album "Focus" was considered a groundbreaking album in the techno music world in 1993, but the band disbanded after just one album. They didn't release another album until 2008 as a reunion project. This song here was never featured on either of their LPs, but remains one of their more well known songs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2keHevAN54

"Two Wheels"- Wax. This guy cracks me up- I'm thinking a white afroman- see for yourself! Wax is from Hollywood, and this single was released on his latest album "Scrublife". LOL this video makes me laugh- this guy is trying way too hard!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv94SkcJAm4

"Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses"- Kathy Mattea. Wow, just SLIGHTLY changing gears here. Have I finally sold my soul to the "old people" devil by including Kathy Mattea? Wow, this is one artist I NEVER saw ever being on here. Oh well, first time for everything. Nothing against country music, but I think it's comical that Kathy Mattea's first #1 country single was about a retiring truckdriver going home to see his wife. Seriously? Anyway, this song was included on Mattea's first gold album, 1987's "Untasted Honey". I have just set this blog back 20 years. Sorry guys.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ElCpHuiWkA

"Wheels"- Jamie Cullum. Anyone else think Jamie Cullum sounds like the lead singer from the Fray? Jamie Cullum is one of our friends from across the pond in the UK who has seen great success in Europe. This single was included on his latest album "The Pursuit". While none of the songs were released in the US, the album was released and peaked at #42 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums Chart. Bonus points for the unicycle riders. I've never seen how people do that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBHsOMEiXPY

"Wheels"- Dan Tyminski. You may not realize it, but you've definitely heard Dan Tyminski before. He provided the voice for George Clooney's character in "O, Brother Where Art Thou?" as the lead singer of the Soggy Bottom Boys (I smell a bonus video), a role which earned him both an Oscar and Grammy in 2001. This title track from his latest album put him a top the Billboard Bluegrass Charts, where he remains one of the more well known Bluegrass artists in a rather obscure genre.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_06a37XrsQw

"Wheel"- John Mayer. Can this guy possibly make a song that sucks? This song, which was included on his 2003 critically acclaimed album "Room For Squares" has always been a fan favorite despite never being released as a single. This is a fantastic live performance from the Canadian TV program "Intimate and Interactive". John Mayer will always be one of the best songwriters around when it comes to emotional soulful guitar ballads like this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dUDhgyRoBM

"Wheel In The Sky"- Journey. Steve Perry's is amazing, but I hate how he "makes love" to the camera.....that's all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFC8sDTXlng

"Jesus Take the Wheel"- Carrie Underwood. No words for this one.........oh yeah, except that Carrie Underwood is freaking hot!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lydBPm2KRaU

"Shoulder To The Wheel"- Saves The Day. These are guys are so 90's! This guys from Princeton, New Jersey included this song on their second album, 1999's "Through Being Cool". I love when bands can be cool towards the end of an era and even into a new era keeping the same style. This video makes me think I'm watching "Cant Hardly Wait", which actually came out the previous year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHBJ-73LQjQ

"Lonely Wheel"- The Almost. I love when artists change positions/instruments (Dave Grohl) and start a new band. Lead singer Aaron Gillespie was originally the drummer for Underoath, and started the Almost as a side project. This song was included on their 2009 album "Monster, Monster", which also included my favorite song by the band, "Hands". I watch The Almost's video and see them perform and I can't help but think that they'd be really good to see live. Aaron Gillespie is also, for the record, the baddest ginger ever- what amazing hair!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bklajyW0jpM

BONUS VIDEOS- "Spinning Wheels"- Angel Taylor. Amazing acoustic version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ5uoccvWpk

"Man of Constant Sorrow"- The Soggy Bottom Boys from "O, Brother Where Art Thou?". The famous "singing in the can" scene. Look close and you'll see Stephen Root, better known as Milton in "Office Space".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krwywj_gIjk

"Can't Get Over You"- Gavin DeGraw. No reason

Late Night Music Part 112.........."Cheerio!"

I've done plenty of foreign lists before, but it was always the most difficult to do a list about artists from the United Kingdom. So many artists have come over, that I have no doubt that I'll realize a great band I left off as soon as I put this up. However, here is my first attempt at a British list, but who's to say I won't have to have a volume 2?

In order to be considered for this list, the ENTIRE BAND had to be from the United Kingdom. This would disqualify Katrina and the Waves, The Pretenders, Foreigner, and Fleetwood Mac. Also, no solo artists were considered. This would disqualify Robbie Williams, Dido, The Bedingfield siblings, and even Elton John. Also receiving votes in this category were "Monday I'm In Love" by The Cure, "Always Something There To Remind Me" by Naked Eyes, "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls, and "Don't Stand So Close To Me" by The Police. NOT receiving votes was anything by Black Sabbath- most overrated band ever? Also, I left off Cleopatra on purpose- do I have to explain why? The Beatles and Rolling Stones were also not included on this list for obvious reasons- I have to make room for others ya know?

"Fix You"- Coldplay. I included this unreal performance from "Austin City Limits" in my "favorite bands" entry a few weeks ago, but I had to put on here again because it's literally just that amazing. I can't think of a better song to end a show. This song was released in 2005 off of Coldplay's masterpiece album "X and Y", and remains a fan favorite, as seen from this video. However, despite pretty good success in Europe, this peaked out at a meager #59 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. I really hate when people call Coldplay a "whiny" band, because this song is probably one of my favorite ever. However, I'm gonna ask Chris Martin to stop humping the piano. I think it speaks volumes for Coldplay to be featured on a show like "Austin City Limits", as it is known for country music, despite it being more diverse in recent years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2qJl7TP9IM

"Chasing Cars"- Snow Patrol. I still can't listen to this song without thinking about the "panties" scene in the "Grey's Anatomy" season 2 finale. You know you were thinking about it too. In 2005, Snow Patrol had already enjoyed success in Europe, but were still pretty unknown in the USA. While riding the wave of their appearance on "Grey's Anatomy", they climbed all the way to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with this song from their critically acclaimed album "Eyes Open". This American version of the music video really shows "laying here" being taken to a new level of literal meaning, and I'm not sure planking wasn't born because of this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GemKqzILV4w

"We Might As Well Be Strangers"- Keane. Every time I hear this song I get chills. This song was featured on Keane's blockbuster debut album "Hopes and Fears", and remains one of their most famous songs ever despite never being released as a single. This video here is from their "Strangers" DVD which is an obvious reference to this song. Keane is known around England and around the world as the "band with no guitars" due to their heavy piano based sound with synthesizers often distorted to sound like other instruments. For some reason, this song always makes me think of alot of people I know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GemKqzILV4w

"Karma Police"- Radiohead. Yes I know you probably wanted to hear "Creep", but that's too easy. This song is SO much better! Despite this song being included on the original "NOW That's What I Call Music" collection in 1997, it never touched the Billboard Hot 100, merely hitting #14 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in the USA. The song was popular due to this very strange video that was the creation of director of Jonathan Glazer (Jamiroquai- you'll see them in a second). He was so hell bent on filming this video after Marilyn Manson turned down the same theme, but later called this video a "failed attempt". I could see that. Despite that, this song is a change in the norm from Radiohead, as this album "OK Computer" contains no other songs like this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBH97ma9YiI

"Year 3000"- Busted. This song was famously, or infamously covered by the Jonas Brothers in 2006 for their first (and second) studio album. This song here by pop/punk band Busted was released on their 2002 debut self-titled album and climbed to #2 on the UK charts and saw success all across Europe. Despite being one of the biggest acts in the UK in 2003-2004, Busted actually busted up the band (pun DEFINITELY intended) in 2005 after only releasing two studio albums. This song is so freaking catchy and I have to admit it gets stuck in my head almost on a routine basis. Also, I think Busted was a good band. I hate when good bands can't stay together because of tensions within the band. Bonus points for the "Back To The Future" refrences and the "video game within the video".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MznLU4USbA

"Alright"- Supergrass. In 1995, Supergrass exploded into Europe with their debut album "I Should Coco". This song wound up topping out at #2 on the British Singles Chart and added this hilarious video. After seeing it, Steven Spielberg actually approached the band (and understandably so) about starting an American TV series similar to that of "The Monkees". The band declined.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUE4oDunYkc

"Girls and Boys"- Blur. Around that same time, Blur was riding high in Europe behind the success of their third album "Parklife". This song was the lead single from the album, and also peaked at #59 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was also the band's first top 5 hit in Europe. This blue screen video was widely popular in the US, as I remember being played 100000 times in the summer of 1994 on "Alternative Nation" back when MTV still had music. The people in the background of the video are clips from 18-30 vacation package commercials, which are so popular in Europe. Also, in another hilarious twist, the cover shot for the single of this song was taken from a picture used by Durex condoms, the most trusted name in contraceptives.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDswiT87oo8

"I Believe In A Thing Called Love"- The Darkness. I FREAKING LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!! The Darkness made their only real splash in the United States with this song from their 2003 album "Permission To Land". Not only does Justin Hawkins put on a falsetto display that would make Barry Gibb jealous, he puts on an incredible vocal performance on EASILY one of the top 5 most difficult karaoke songs I've ever heard (right up there with "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" by Jennifer Hudson). Who would have thought that a glam rock band could look so cool in 2003, 14 years after the last of the hair bands died out? This song was a #2 hit in the UK, but only managed to crack the top 10 of the dreaded "Modern Rock Tracks" chart in the United States. Despite this, this video (which also looks super retro) was wildly popular in the USA, and I feel like an idiot, because for some reason I really thought this song was by the Black Crowes- I know, just slap me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRYNYb30nxU

"Your Love"- The Outfield. The Outfield has always been a sort of anomaly. Despite pretty good success in the US in the mid 80's, they were virtual unknowns in the UK. This song from their 1986 hit debut album "Play Deep" hit #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an 80's anthem, as well as their signature song. It also became a favorite at karaoke clubs all over the world. Bonus points for the mullets in the video as well as the fact that a British band has a name specific to an American sport.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N1iwQxiHrs

"Push The Button"- Sugababes. Sugababes are so hot! This song hit #1 on the British Singles Chart in 2005 off of their album "Taller In More Ways". VERY ironic that the very group they bumped out of #1 was the group I thought of the first I saw this video. Pussycat Dolls- disagree? Unlike the overrated Spice Girls before them, Sugababes have never released anything in the United States, and as far as I know, they've never even toured here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJDGcxAf9D8

"Never Ever"- All Saints. Speaking of hot British girl groups! All Saints hit #1 all over the planet with this debut single from their self titled 1997 album. I know the Spice Girls were bigger (but for some reason we haven't seen them on this list......hmmmmmmm), but All Saints was so much more talented. All Saints also featured Shaznay Lewis (from the movie "Bend It Like Beckham"). Also, unlike the other British girl groups, All Saints has always had the same lineup.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx6DtgW_uh0

"Rome Wasn't Built In A Day"- Morcheeba. Sometimes I really find the groups I discover on this blog to be a real joy. This r & b/pop/jazz/funk band is no different. This song from their 2000 album "Fragments of Freedom" is actually one of the band's biggest hits despite just topping out at #34 on the British Singles Chart. Lead singer Skye Edwards reminds me SO much of Freshlyground's Zolani Mohala- it's really almost scary how alike they are. Bonus points for the awful yet highly entertaining choreographed Egyptian dancing in this video. I think this video is very "American"- maybe it's just me, but I've never seen many British videos like this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FmognvrztU

"Silly Love Songs"- Wings. Ok, this one is almost cheating, but I'm gonna count it. This song was a worldwide SMASH #1 on Wings 1976 album "Wings At The Speed of Sound", and has always been my favorite Wings song. In fact, the song was so big, it was even named the #1 song at the Billboard Hot 100 year end chart for 1976. Despite this song's awesomeness, Paul McCartney, for an unknown reason, doesn't play the song live anymore. I'm sure most of you have heard how upset I was that he didn't play this song after I saw him live in New Orleans in 2002. I am guessing it was either because he didn't have a horn section that night (Paul would never use tracks, only live instruments, and this song is impossible without that- just saying), or the fact that Linda had such a huge part on the song that he unofficially "retired" it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AK9QVN0bpa4

"Two Steps Behind"- Def Leppard. A few years after taking a break from their arena glam rock days, Def Leppard came back in 1993 with this hit single from their album "Retro Active". This song peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and put Def Leppard back in the spotlight for a short time. There were actually two versions of this song, an electric version, and the acoustic version heard here. This version was also featured on the forgettable Arnold Schwarzenegger film "The Last Action Hero". I love how Joe Clark looks exactly the same as he did in 1982 in this video, but I can't understand why this video is so gloomy. Are they just trying to copy Poison?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxJJJGU80wg

"Sing"- Travis. I was wondering when I'd get to include these guys again. This lead single from their 2001 album "The Invisible Band" is the band's best known song, and peaked at #3 on the British Singles Chart. This song was some of Travis's first real airplay in the US as this song appeared at #37 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks. This song was also included on the soundtrack to the 2002 Adam Sandler movie "Mr. Deeds". These guys remind me alot of All American Rejects not only with their style, but with their videos. I love a band that can have a funny video to a serious song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1f2M5G9KG8

"Come Undone"- Duran Duran. Not gonna lie, this video scared the crap out of me. This has to be the first time I've watched it since 6th grade. Watch if you dare.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICnlyNUt_0o

"True"- Spandau Ballet. Whatever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR8D2yqgQ1U

BONUS VIDEOS-

"Otherwise"- Morcheeba. Another great song from Morcheeba.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxn-fz9mjo4

"Two Steps Behind"- Def Leppard. The electric version. Had never heard before now. Very interesting.

"We All Die Young"- Steel Dragon. Sorry.

Late Night Music Part 111........"I Can't Get Out From Under These Cover Songs!"

Well, the 1's are wild tonight, so I figured I'd go out on a limb and do yet another cover song blog. If you all haven't figured out by now, I am OBSESSED, yes OBSESSED with cover songs. Just when I think I've included all of them, I always stumble upon more. I would also like to say that this list has taken longer than any other list I've ever done, but it was one of the most fun I've had making in a long time.

In a rare feat, all songs receiving votes were included on tonight's list.

"The Lazy Song"- Naya Marie with John Vella (Originally by Bruno Mars). As you all have figured out by now, I'm becoming a huge fan of this Canadian gem! This video was recorded live in Australia with Australian singer/songwriter John Vella. For some weird reason, he reminds me of Edward Norton. Also, females pay attention. Naya Marie is a perfect example of how you can have lots of piercings and still look glamorous. They can be cool, but they have to be done right and not just taken out of control- end of soapbox. Like I said before, follow Naya Marie on twitter @nayamarie or find her on facebook. You can also check out all of her videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/nayamarie2009. The Bruno Mars version of this song from his debut album "Doo Wops and Hooligans" went to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Hilarious video.....that's gonna be a theme in this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG39O1qdSTw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLexgOxsZu0

"Time After Time"- Quietdrive (Originally by Cyndi Lauper). This very interesting cover of the 1984 Cyndi Lauper ballad was included on Quietdrive's 2006 debut album "When All That's Left Is You". Surprisingly, the song by Lauper has been covered over 120 times! I've heard a few of the other versions, but I'm still gonna call this one the best, even better than the Boyz II Men version. However, the charts didn't think so, as this single peaked at #102 on the US Hot 100. I'm scratching my head too, how is that possible?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bk3M95qcepw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdQY7BusJNU

"Dreams"- The Corrs (Originally by Fleetwood Mac). Usually, I leave classic songs like this one (which is one of my all time favorites by one of my all time favorite bands) alone just because they are usually in the "untouchable" category just due to the greatness of the original. However, this version is so clever I felt like I had to include it. I always felt Fleetwood Mac was one of the toughest bands to cover just due to the great musicianship they had as a band. I remember this rose to a point so high once that I called in Y101 and hollered at Mike Montana for playing a cover of Fleetwood Mac for their recent "Rumors" tribute album right after a phone interview with Mick Fleetwood. However, on this song, I seriously eat my words. The fact that the Corrs can pull of Irish Folk Music and Techno/Dance with this song and still have it awesome is literally amazing. This single was released on their 1998 album "Talk On Corners" and peaked at #6 in both Ireland and the UK, and saw other success on the charts in other European countries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BglEyv5O2Y

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDCYbQc28Hw

"One More Try"- Divine (Originally by George Michael). Ok, we all remember how sick we got of hearing Divine's lead single "Lately" from their debut (and only) album "Fairy Tales". The follow up to their #1 hit was this cover of George Michael's 1988 #1 hit from his debut solo album "Faith". This version merely peaked at #29, but I was always wowed by this effort, just not by the weird video. Seriously, Divine's wardrobe designer should have been fired. I think Divine had the unfortunate luck of being around at the same time as Destiny's Child, Aaliyah, and even Xscape. There just wasn't any more room for 90's-esque girl R & B groups as the decade wound down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC8gRv-JsjM

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG5N3GC-m20

"Weak"- Queen of Hearts (Originally by SWV). Yes! I found another Canadian youtube sensation in Queen of Hearts. This up and coming girl group from Toronto put on a great track with this cover of the 1993 worldwide #1. Be sure to follow Queen of Hearts on twitter @queenofheartsto or like them on facebook!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MQID1OLlHg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6qiV2nS6Js

"Bizarre Love Triangle"- Frente! (Originally by New Order). Frente! made a 1:55 splash in the United States with this abbreviated version of the New Order classic. The song landed at #49 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was included on this Australian band's debut album "Marvin the Album". Ironically, the song actually charted higher than the original version by New Order despite it being probably the band's most popular song and one of the most famous dance/techno hits of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDCYbQc28Hw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8d91WpU4fo

"Don't Turn Around"- Ace of Base (Originally by Tina Turner). Before Tina Turner was on Bali commercials, she released this song in 1986 as the B-Side to "Typical Male" from Tina's hit 1986 album "Break Every Rule". The song was largely forgotten until it was picked up by Ace of Base and included on their worldwide smash 1993 album "The Sign" and reached a surprising #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. I feel like I'm watching a really bad foreign soap opera from the 80's when I watch this video. Why do European bands do that?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us9O_Anwi_Q

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPJgQlUiZPE

"Smooth Criminal"- Alien Ant Farm (Originally by Michael Jackson). I honestly can't remember if I had included this one before, but if I did I really don't care because this is freaking awesome. The band included the song on their debut album "Anthology" and it became their highest charting single to date peaking at #23. The band actually recorded the song by "accident" as they would play parts of the song in soundcheck during live performances causing the band to request them to play the whole song. What we got was a great cover song and an unreal video. This one is so good despite it being also in the "untouchable" class for the most part. I can't think of another Michael Jackson cover I would put on this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDl9ZMfj6aE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_D3VFfhvs4

"Dream On"- Train (Originally by Aerosmith). Ok, I'm counting this one despite it never being recorded on an album by Train. I'm counting it because I saw them do this song live in 2003 in Hattiesburg, MS at USM when they were touring in support of their album "My Private Nation". They actually closed the show with this song. At that point, the song was surprisingly 30 years old, as it was on Aerosmith's self-titled debut album in 1973.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV42oU3QBwY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLz-68n6bvI

"Take On Me"- Northern Kings (Originally by A-ha). I really like Finnish symphonic rock bands. Call it a guilty pleasure. The Northern Kings are Finland's version of the Traveling Wilburys, as it serves as a side project for all members who have found success in other bands, including Marco Hietala from one of my personal favorites, Nightwish. The Northern Kings have recorded two albums of nothing but cover songs that have been nothing short of off the wall, especially for this genre. However, they pay homage to their Scandinavian friends from Norway with this cover that was featured on their 2008 album "Rethroned". You know were great as a one hit wonder when a Finnish symphonic rock band is covering your song 23 years after it was released. Despite A-ha still touring and recording, they have never come close to the success of this debut single that was included on their debut album "Hunting High and Low" and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlupRATWkm0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914

"Slow Dancing In A Burning Room"- Tyler Ward (Originally by John Mayer). Tyler Ward is a Denver based artist who has gotten tons of popularity from his youtube videos and iTunes songs. This cover of my favorite John Mayer song (another one that would usually be on the "untouchable" list) with a little help from mom. Is done phenomenally. Check it out on iTunes. Also, you can follow Tyler Ward on twitter at @tylerwardmusic or you can like him on facebook.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9NceVrhTOg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6fwA37LEqA

"I'll Be There"- Mariah Carey feat. Trey Lorenz (Originally by The Jackson 5). This song was the song that put Mariah Carey in the spotlight. Back when MTV still had music, Mariah Carey had an amazing "Unplugged" special as well as hit EP to accompany the live performance. This single, which also went to #1 like the Jackson 5 version, was actually released before the album was released and before the special actually aired live just due to the demand of the single on airplay. This single also featured Trey Lorenz, who had a top 20 hit just a few months later with "Someone To Hold". Also, if you look closely, you will see future R & B diva Kelly Price singing background vocals. Bonus points for Michael Jackson appearing twice on the list and for the memorable live performance from the 1983 Motown 25 TV special.

"Fireflies"- Sienna Skies (Originally by Owl City). I pulled this one out of nowhere. Sienna Skies is a hardcore metal band from Melbourne, Australia that covered this song by Owl City, who for my money, is quite possibly the most talented guy out there in music right now.

"I Love The Way You Lie", "Dynamite", and "Teenage Dream" (Mashup originally by Eminem featuring Rhianna, Taio Cruz, and Katy Perry). Ok I take that back- Sam Tsui is freaking amazing. I can't say anything about this video because it seriously speaks for itself. Check out Sam Tsui on facebook or follow him on twitter @samueltsui.

Late Night Music Part 110......"Run For Your Life!"

To quote Forrest Gump, "I Just Felt Like Running".

In order to receive votes in this category, the SONG TITLE had to contain the word "RUN" or "RUNNING". The word "RAN" was not acceptable, so "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls would be disqualified. Also receiving votes in this category were "Run" by Collective Soul, "Run The Show" Kat DeLuna featuring Busta Rhymes, "A Good Day To Run" by Darryl Worley, and "Running With The Wolves" by Cloud Cult.

"Run This Town"- Jay-Z featuring Rhianna (and oh yeah, Kanye West). Something about this song just get me so excited I wanna run around the room and break stuff, except for the part when Kanye raps, but we'll forget that part. This video makes me think I'm watching a cross between the KKK rally at the beginning of "Bad Boys 2", "Shrek The Final Chapter" , "Stargate", and "Lord of The Rings". Very dark tone ya know? Bonus points for Rhianna wearing the lingerie while being a member of a militia- is that a first? This song was featured on Jay-Z's smash album "The Blueprint 3" and reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. This video now officially makes Rhianna the all time leader in the "featuring category. I think a rapper now hasn't made it until he makes a track with Rhianna.

"Runnin' With The Devil"- Van Halen. In 1978, Van Halen burst onto to the scene with their self-titled debut album. Their first single was a cover of the Kinks hit "You Really Got Me". Their first ever "original" single was this song released in May 1978. I think it's pretty cool how Van Halen was definitely around in the 70's but always SCREAMED 80's with everything about them, it's almost like they knew the sound was about to change. Also, is it just me, or did Michael Anthony always look like a professional wrestler?

"Running On Empty"- Jackson Browne. Just a year before Van Halen debuted, Jackson Browne released his famous "live" album "Running On Empty". One of the most famous albums of all time, the album was unique in the fact that all the tracks were either recorded at live performances, backstage, in hotel rooms, or on the tour bus. Also, unlike any other live album ever made, the song featured no songs featured on any previous studio albums. This title track peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and as most of you remember, it made a cameo in the 1994 blockbuster "Forrest Gump" appearing on the film's soundtrack. I'm pretty sure that this live performance was the one that was included on the album track, as it sounds almost identical. However, I'm gonna go ahead and name his male background singer the goofiest background singer of all time- who in the world sings a whole song with his hands on his hips other than Peyton Manning? (I smell a bonus video).

"Run"- Leona Lewis. In 2007, Leona Lewis was on the top of the world after winning "Britain's Got Talent", and her debut album "Spirit" was the biggest album in Europe with this song at #1 in the UK, Ireland, and Austria. The song was already a cover of Snow Patrol (stay tuned), and was obviously an effort by Lewis to draw more fans to her already growing popularity. The video for the song was also critically acclaimed, but I can't seem to find it. I'm admittedly usually not too fond of European women, but Leona Lewis is one of the hotter women in music and her voice on this song is absolutely angelic.

"Run"- Snow Patrol. Speaking of the devil......this original version by Snow Patrol was included on their 2004 album "Final Straw". While Leona Lewis did a great cover it, I just think this is more of a rock song, and this is one of Snow Patrol's better songs. However, call me crazy, it just seems like all British bands in the 2000's had the same structure to their songs, because this sounds alot like a song that Coldplay would do- anyone disagree?

"Run Riot"- Def Leppard. I would say more about this song, but I seriously can't understand what they're saying. Unlike usual, I'm not begging Rick Allen to put a shirt on, as he had figured out to put one at this point. However, in 1987, Def Leppard's mega smash album "Hysteria" was probably the most famous album to never reach #1, as a little album called "'Bad" stood in it's way. Despite that, Def Leppard was one of the biggest acts in the world. I tried to change my mind on this video, but I still think Phil Collen looks like Larry Bird.

"I Run To You"- Lady Antebellum. I have to admit that I feel really stupid just now figuring out that Charles Kelley is Josh Kelley's brother. I should have seen that one a mile away. This track from Lady Antebellum's self-titled 2008 debut album hit #27 on the Billboard Hot 100, but catapulted them into the mainstream and poised them for their 2010 sweep at the Grammys. Really interesting video here- kind of unusual for a country video.

"Run The World (Girls)"- Beyonce. You can't tell me anything right now.......I'm just staring at Beyonce.

"Run With Us"- Lisa Lougheed. I have to admit that this song was always stuck in my head as a young child when I was three of my favorite shows were Canadian imports- "You Can't Do That on Television", "Today's Special", and the show to which this song was the theme song for, "The Raccoons" which aired on the Disney Channel. Canadian singer Lisa Lougheed performed the song and was the voice for Lisa Raccoon on the show. Despite always being a regular on the song, this was Lougheed's only taste of the charts, as this song peaked at #69 on the Canadian charts and was her only crack of the Canadian top 100. Apparently, Lisa Lougheed thought that making us think we were watching "Tron" in her video would help..........oops.

"Run's House"- Run DMC. Be honest, you know you thought about Matt Damon singing this song in "Dogma". I know I did. This song from Run DMC's album "Tougher Than Leather" reached #10 on the Hip/Hop Charts in 1988, and gave us this hilarious video 23 years later as a time capsule for the evolution of rap music.

"Run To You"- Whitney Houston. Sorry, I had to. I loathe this movie, but man that is one awesome song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9rCobRl-ng

"Running Back"- Jessica Mauboy featuring Flo Rida. Double bonus points for Jessica Mauboy being Australian AND being a indigenous Australian, which is about 1% of the Australian population. This debut single for Jessica Mauboy off of her album "Been Waiting" reached #3 on the Australian charts, and was Flo Rida's first appearance on the Australian charts as well. Jessica Mauboy is a former contestant on "Australian Idol", but much like the American version, the winner isn't always the most famous (another sign that the show is internationally rigged). You can disagree if you want, but I'm telling you that if Jessica Mauboy was in the United States she would be a superstar.

"Running"- This Century. This is a pretty good live acoustic set of This Century's song from their 2009 album "To Love And Back". I had to make sure I wasn't watching The Maine at first. Check out This Century on facebook to hear some more of their music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtsfgeewJhM

"Running With The Night"- Lionel Richie. Corniest singer ever? All I can think about when I see this video was Chris Tucker's famous line in "Rush Hour 2"......"Lionel Richie ain't been black since the Commodores man!". I'd have to agree. Despite this being a ridiculously stupid video and just a decent song, the song was included on his famous 1983 album "Can't Slow Down" and reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PnhlXLHKAE

"Runnin' Down a Dream"- Tom Petty. This song was included on Tom Petty's debut solo album "Full Moon Fever" and was famously included in his Super Bowl 42 Halftime Show performance. I HATE I can't find this video, as it was animated and actually really creative. This single peaked at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1D3a5eDJIs

"Run For Your Life"- The Beatles. This obscure Beatles song was featured on 1965's "Rubber Soul" and has some of the strangest lyrics John Lennon ever wrote- can you say psycho murderer? I always thought this song was catchy though just because of the pause because they lyrics "little girl". Hilariously, George Harrison said this was his favorite song on the album, despite John Lennon stating in a 1973 interview that he regretted writing it and that it was his least favorite song on the album. Many people have since speculated that his 1971 single "Jealous Guy" from his 1971 album "Imagine" was the same person talking in a more apologetic manner.
