Late Night Music Spring Break Edition Part 173......"The Color Of Love"

It's spring break! So I figured I'd pump out a new list for those of you at work today. I'm relaxing in my bed doing a little laundry......I'm trying not to rub it in. This one surprisingly came to me a few days ago when I realized how many songs have "color in the title".

In order to be considered for this list, the SONG TITLE had to have the word "color" in some form in it. In a "Late Night Music" rarity, all songs receiving votes were included in this list.

"In Color"- Jamey Johnson. Jamey Johnson made his epic contribution to the world of country music in 2008 with this unreal ballad from his album That Lonesome Song. Originally slated for Trace Adkins, Johnson convinced Adkins to let him record the song himself, which would go on to be his best known song and would win the award for Song of the Year at the ACM Awards in 2009. This song remains a popular live performance song for bands all around, as I've heard at least 4 versions of it myself. This single went to peak at #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the Billboard Country Charts. One of these days, country singers will find out that songs like this always seem to the best in the country music world. It seems like all of my favorite country songs are the sentimental personal songs, not the getting drunk with crazy women songs. Maybe it's just me.

"The Color of Love"- Boyz II Men. For the life of me, I just can not understand why this song by R&B superstars Boyz II Men did not take off more than it did. This Babyface-penned lead single from their 2002 Arista Records debut (and ironically, only album on the label) Full Circle had this big budget music video to give a prelude to the album's release. Unfortunately, at this point of their careers, only true fans had stuck with them and enjoyed their previous album Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya despite it's very favorable reviews. This video had huge world premiere status on MTV, VH1, and BET, and was called by some the "most ambitious music video ever made" with each group member working with different directors in Tokyo, Ghana, San Juan, and India, with group scenes in New York commemorating the recent 9/11 attacks. Despite all of this, the single only peaked at #24 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart. This would prove to be Boyz II Men's mainstream swan song, as Michael McCrary would leave the group just a few months later due to his declining health. Boyz II Men is still alive and kicking, releasing one online-only album and three solid albums of cover songs, but they are far from the household name that I grew up knowing them as. That being said, they are easily one of my favorite groups of all time, and have influenced the R&B we know today to an extent that can't be measured. They also were almost singlehandedly responsible for saving Motown Records. In addition, this will always be one of my favorite songs by them. 12 years later, it's just as good as the first time I heard it.

"Don't Stop (Color On The Walls)"- Foster The People. This catchy tune from Foster the People's 2011 much anticipated follow up album Torches. Their worldwide hit "Pumped Up Kicks" got them a nice mainstream following, but this single was featured on the Nissan Versa commercial as well as the soundtrack for the Disney Pixar movie "Turbo" got them even more exposure. This hilarious video featuring "Precious" star and Academy Award nominee Gabourey Sibide gave the already popular band an even bigger fan base when this video received heavy airplay on the music channels. This single would go on to peak at #86 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Billboard Alternative Singles Chart.

"Colours"- Grouplove. This Los Angeles band released this song and video as their debut singles off of their 2010 debut album Never Trust a Happy Song (which would featured their breakthrough single "Tongue Tied"). This single was featured on the soundtracks to Madden NFL 12, and FIFA 12 and NBA 2k12. It peaked at #12 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks Chart, and introduced the world to the awesome vocals of Christian Zucconi. This rather disturbing yet creative video shows where these guys minds are when they are coming up with a song concept. I have to say I like it. This video and sound really reminds me of Shreveport's and up and coming band Super Water Sympathy.

"Colour My World"- Chicago. This B-Side track was featured twice during the 70's in support of single from Chicago's 1970 sophomore album Chicago. Despite it's B-Side status, the song was a staple at high school proms throughout the 70's and still remains performed at nearly every Chicago show despite the numerous line up changes. This song is a perfect example as to how Chicago started out as a band and how they evolved musically over the years. Their later releases sound absolutely nothing like this.

"Colors of the Wind"- Vanessa Williams. This single from the always super gorgeous Vanessa Williams was released in support of the 1995 Disney animated blockbuster "Pocahontas". Despite her beautiful voice and decent song penned by Disney mainstay Alan Menken, this song was played to absolute death by every radio station and tv channel just due to its universal appeal. Despite its overwhelming annoyingness, it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and proved to be Williams last hit as a musician before she transitioned to an extremely successful acting career which included being on the casts of hit TV shows "Ugly Betty" and "Desperate Housewives", while still releasing music sporadically.

"Colours"- Emma Hewitt. I have to admit I was reluctant to put this song on here at first, but it's just one of those songs that grows on you as you listen to it. After breaking off from Australian group Missing Hours, she made her solo debut in 2012 with this lead single from her debut album Burn The Sky Down. This distinctive sound and voice support this very strange yet trancing video. Hewitt is deceptively gorgeous and absolutely owns this song making it an almost effortless performance.

"True Colors"- Cyndi Lauper. In 1986, Cyndi Lauper was riding high as one of the top acts in the world after the success of her 1983 debut album Shes's So Unusual. Her distinct voice and style made her a mainstay of MTV and VH1. This hit single was the title track to her much anticipated 1986 follow up album and landed her second and final #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Lauper's popularity waned severely shortly after this single was released, as her next two singles climbed into the top 15, but her success was never the same after that. She remains a popular act, and I actually heard her give a solid performance of the National Anthem at Wrigley Field in 1999 as the Cubs blew a 7-2 lead to the New York Mets. This song remains a very popular cover song.....I smell a bonus video.

"My Color"- Perfume. This very colorful promotional video for J-Pop girl supergroup Perfume was included on the band's 10th anniversary 2011 album JPN and helped launch a very successful Asian concert tour for one of the most famous girl groups in J-Pop history. These Asian megastars had already gained American exposure with their song "Polyrhythm" making an appearance on the Disney Pixar film "Cars 2". This much anticipated album debuted at #1 on the Oricon Japanese Albums Chart and kept Perfume at the top of J-Pop where they've remained since 2001.

"Colorblind"- Counting Crows. This Adam Duritz piano masterpiece from The Counting Crows spectacular 1993 debut album August and Everything After showed the diversity and artistic nature of Adam Duritz's songwriting, which I believe is largely overlooked by many people. This song was featured in the movie and on the soundtrack for the 1999 teen drama "Cruel Intentions" (which would have, in my opinion, one of the best soundtracks ever despite being an extremely subpar movie....again, in my opinion). According to Duritz, this song came from his longing to make himself less judgemental with the "black and white" in the song representing people being unable to be between extremes in judging people and ideas. Counting Crows would never match the commercial success of their debut album, but remains one of the most popular live acts of all time.

"Life In Color"- OneRepublic. This track is included on the self-proclaimed "genre-less" band OneRepublic's 2013 album Native and has been included on promotional commercials for NBC's "The Voice" as well as in the soundtrack for the 2014 film "Son of God", but gained most notoriety as the theme song for the Australian TV show "House Rules". While the lyrics sound pretty normal to OneRepublic's sound, this is a very different instrumental track than their usual stuff. This song helped Native peak at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart.

"The War Was In Color"- Carbon Leaf. This track from Carbon Leaf's 2006 commercial breakthrough album Love, Loss, Hope, Repeat brought them attention to the mainstream after already having a very loyal fanbase. This 2006 album peaked at #170 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart. This biographical epic track shows the true musical talent of Carbon Leaf that had led to them being one of the most well known bands in college towns across the country. This Richmond, Virginia group continues to pop out albums at an unreal rate. I have to thank my good friend and old co worker Jasin Wills to getting me into Carbon Leaf back in 2007.

"Colored People"- dc Talk. In 1995, dc Talk was without a question the biggest name in Christian music when their groundbreaking 1992 album Free At Last was named the new trend setter by several mainstream publications. Their 1995 follow up, Jesus Freak remains one of the most anticipated and successful albums in Christian music history, with the icing on the cake being the album taking home the Grammy for Best Rock Gospel Album in 1997. The album went double platinum and introduced dc Talk to the mainstream where they became the first Christian rock band to perform on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in 1995. This single received mainstream airplay just due to the band's outspoken stance against racism. Jesus Freak would go on amazingly to have 8 singles released just due to the overwhelming popularity of the album. This single would peak at #1 on the CCM Charts and would continue to mold the careers of now successful solo act TobyMac and Newsboys lead singer Michael Tait. dc Talk would go on to only make more album before splitting indefinitely in 2000. While only together for 13 years, they have been called by most publications the most popular overtly Christian act of all time.
