Late Night Music The Grand Return Edition Part 166...."Guilty Pleasures Part 4"

I never thought I'd become so busy that I would have stop writing my famous "Late Night Music" series. This is easily the longest gap I've ever had in writing, and the begging for a new list finally got to me tonight. I am busier now than I ever have been in my life, but I wasn't going to do anything else until I finished this list tonight. Being my fourth guilty pleasure list, I had to make it a good one of the songs that I have listened to a lot the last few weeks. Thanks for your patience everyone, and enjoy tonight's list.

Also receiving votes in this category were "Constant Craving" by K.D. Lang, "Can't Smile Without You" by Barry Manilow, and "Think About You" by LFO.

"Mirrors"- Justin Timberlake. After JT's surprise performance at the 2013 Grammys he released this single 2 days later to push the release of his much anticipated album The 20/20 Experience, and was the album's second single. The tribute to his current wife Jessica Biel, the track went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and had a very interesting video to accompany it. Justin Timberlake is one of those I just want to hate so bad, but he's so talented it's seriously not fair. The catchiness combined with a clever lyrically written song here makes for a guilty pleasure track of epic proportions. To make it worse, I recently repeated this song FOUR times on my playlist.

"Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)"- Katy Perry. Katy Perry is another one that I want to hate so bad, but I just can't help myself. Her songs are so catchy and she has a beautiful voice. To top it off, she's hot. This ode to partying was featured on Perry's smash album Teenage Dream, and according to Perry herself, it was based off of real life party that Perry had in which she claims streaking was involved. This single went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and had this very entertaining video that includes "Glee" stars Darren Criss and Kevin McHale. Katy Perry is just one of those artists that makes you feel like a teenager when you listen to her. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Bonus points for Debbie Gibson at the end of the video.

"Ice Ice Baby"- Vanilla Ice. Whatever.

"Incomplete"- Backstreet Boys. The scariest part of my love of the Backstreet Boys is that I liked them when they were huge, and but I was just as into them when they released this comeback single in 2005 on their much anticipated album Never Gone. I think the main problem with me and BSB is that I wanted to be one so bad and I thought it was a cool way to be famous. This single put BSB back on the radio and peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100. I think it's kinda funny how Kevin Richardson left the band after this album because he said he was "too old to be in a boy band", but now he's back. I guess it's a bad sign when you wind up on the Adult Contemporary Chart after being featured in teen magazines your whole career, but I think Backstreet's back, alright?

"Invisible"- Clay Aiken. I was invisible, I'd never tell anyone I love this song.

"Hold Me Now"- Thompson Twins. This one always throws me for a loop because even when videos and music were supposed to be weird, this one was still over the top. For example, why in the blue hades are those xylophone mallets so big? I guess their look was to creep everyone out and then sing cheesy songs. This single from their album Into The Gap peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1983, and Thompson Twins very quickly faded into oblivion thankfully to never be heard from again. Now if I can just go one time through without singing along with this song.

"Dim All The Lights"- Donna Summer. Donna Summer had a voice of a freaking angel on steroids. To sound like that and still be so powerful is phenomenal, but like most queens of the disco era, it was just too much to bring yourself to like her so much these days. Despite that, I can never get enough of this song, which was always my favorite by her. This track is famous for being Summer's only hit that she wrote completely alone and also is the record for the longest sustained note by a female ever on a Billboard record at about 16 seconds. At the time of this release in 1979 on her Bad Girls album, Summer was one of the hottest acts in the world and it showed when this single peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. I was truly saddened by her passing a couple of years ago from a heart attack, but she will always be one of my favorite guilty pleasures of all time.

"Must Be Doing Something Right"- Billy Currington. This one qualifies because I've sang it karaoke several times and have never once had a guy sing a long with me. The funny thing is that every time I do this song, couples of all orientations begin to slow dance, usually at a female's request. The joke I always have with this song is that I have been "indirectly" responsible for the conception of a child because my singing of this song rekindled the flames of lost love. Billly Currington is just one of those guys that guys aren't supposed to like. This title track from his 2005 album went to #39 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Country Chart. True story- on more than one occasion, this song has started at karaoke and a guy has looked at me and said "you aren't singing this". However, women always give a big "awwwwwwww". Something is wrong with that picture.

"Best Of My Love"- The Emotions. All I'll say about this one is that I definitely dance around my room to this one when no one is around. The Emotions are best known for their collaboration with Earth, Wind, and Fire on their hit single "Boogie Wonderland". This song was actually co-written by Earth, Wind, and Fire mainstay Maurice White, which helped it climb to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1977 off of their album Rejoice. That same year, the song won the Grammy for Best R & B Performance. You can sense the influence of Earth, Wind, and Fire in this song, but I just can't get ever feel good about singing this song.

"A Whole New World"- Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. Not only do I know every word to this song, most of you know the story of me performing this song at my senior year spring musical in high school. I don't feel bad about liking the movie or the song so much, it's just the fact that it's Peabo Bryson. Has there ever been a bigger poor man's Lionel Richie? He hit #1 with this hit with his only other Top 10 song being a just as bad duet with Celine Dion from the other Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast". The fact that Peabo Bryson is now on late night infomercials pushing compilation CDs shows you just how ridiculous he was. That being said, I can never get enough of this song.

"Glory of Love"- Peter Cetera. This one really pains me. Before Peter Cetera, Chicago was a cool rock group. When he came along, they turned into something you were embarassed to listen to. I still don't know why the producers of the much anticipated 1986 box office blockbuster "The Karate Kid Part 2" added this song to a movie that was supposed to make us think that Daniel Laruso was a tough guy. To make it worse, this song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped start Peter Cetera's much ridiculous solo career. The icing on the cake was that this song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Yet here I am, singing every note.

"Strong Enough To Break"- Hanson. I would like to point out that Hanson has now appeared on three of my four guilty pleasure lists. This gives them the imaginary award for the biggest guilty pleasure ever. This title track to their documentary and the lead track off of their 2004 album Underneath is a seriously great written song by three talented guys that perform it so well together. Then, you remember that these same guys got famous with "MMMBop" and all you want to do is throw up.

"I Will Not Be Broken"- Bonnie Raitt. This one is so bad even I almost decided to leave it off. Why does this song stick with me so much? I heard this one on so many store playlists that I worked at it became carved into my being- is that what she was trying to do? This 2005 single was included on her album Souls Alike and peaked at #27 on the ever so taboo Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart. That's all you need to know as to why I consider this song a guilty pleasure.

"Domino"- Jessie J. I know for a fact this song is on regular rotation in gay clubs across America. I also lip sync it every time it comes on. And then you wonder why I think you guys wonder about me. Just saying.

"I Can't Wait Another Minute"- Hi-Five. I always bring this song up when people talk about 90's R & B and then people look at me crazy. These guys from Waco, TX made their mark with this kiddie single from their 1990 self-titled debut album that featured their #1 hit "The Kissing Game". This follow single peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave us all a soul ballad to laugh about for years to come. I watch this video and all I can think about is that these guys look a goofier less hard acting version of Another Bad Creation, which we all remember, was the first CD I ever bought.

"You And I"- Lady Gaga. I'll just let you watch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9YMU0WeBwU

"My Love"- Little Texas. Was there a goofier country group ever? These guys make Restless Heart, Lonestar, and even Diamond Rio look cool. The fact that I know every word to this song makes me wonder about myself. Also, I watch this video and I ask myself if a woman that looks like that would ever really go for guys that look like Little Texas. The stupidest thing is that Little Texas was from NASHVILLE. What kind of band does that? This single came out in the summer of 1994 on their album Big Time and became their only #1 hit on the Billboard Country Chart and peaked at #83 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was like every country group had to have long hair in the 90's just because it was a thing in the rock scene in 80's. A little late on that one guys.

"I'll Be Loving You (Forever)"- New Kids On The Block. Two words. Jordan Knight.

"Call Me Maybe"- Carly Rae Jepsen. You knew it was coming.

"Let Me Down Easy"- Billy Currington.
