Late Night Music Part 9..............."Pass Me the Puck, I'm a Canuck"

I sometimes feel that I am a little hard on our neighbors to the North. Truth is they have provided was some memorably great..............and memorably not so great music. While some of the below listed acts were good at times, we look back in embarassment now not only because of how goofy and obvious Canadian and American styles looked trying to be combined and just how bad some of these songs really are. Here's the rub though- how often have you caught yourself singing one of these songs to yourself or blasting it in your car? Well, we're all about to see- enjoy. Also receiving votes in this category were: Sophie B. Hawkins, Tal Bachman, Deborah Cox, Joni Mitchell, Bryan Adams, Neil Young, and Rush. NOT receiving votes in this category was Celine Dion.

Crash Test Dummies- "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm". These strange guys who admitted that their band name was "thought up while we were drunk" made Winnipeg and all Manitobans everywhere in 1994 when there second hit single shot up the charts in 1994. For you music officianados out there, you might notice that the band plays maybe 4 chords this entire song, and someone PLEASE tell me what these lyrics actually mean! Seriously, if you can tell me, I might go "mmm mmm mmm mmm".

Barenaked Ladies- "If I had $1,000,000". Toronto's fan favorite had this song on their 1996 album "Rock Spectacle", shortly before their international success of "Stunt". While this song is clever and catchy, this could possibly be the most redundant song since Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer". Let me also add that, yes we know if you had a million dollars, you'd be rich. One question always remains- are they talking American or Canadian currency?

The Band- "The Weight". Might be surprised on this one. This classic "American" classic folk rock favorite that was even performed at the original Woodstock is actually by this Toronto, um......band. I like this song, but I think the lead singer is either drunk or has a speech problem. How hard is this guy to understand?

The DeFranco Family- "Heartbeat (It's A Lovebeat)". HOLD THE PHONES!!!! We have a Late Night Music first!!!!! This is the FIRST TIME that a video has appeared on here TWICE!!!! Congratulations to the DeFranco Family (see "Musical Families") from the small Lake Erie town of Port Colborne, Ontario. They will forever live in our hearts with their INCREDIBLY cheesy, but still incredibly catchy 1973 debut single. However, like I said before, WHO IN THE WORLD TAUGHT THESE KIDS HOW TO DANCE???? YIKES!

Loverboy- "Workin' For the Weekend". Mike Reno is the front man of this Calgary band- enough said. Does ANYTHING about him look "American" to you? These guys are a dead giveaway. Still like to think of the movie "Zoolander" when I hear this song.

Steppenwolf- "Magic Carpet Ride". Ah HAH! Another one you thought was American! These guys from Toronto rocked their way to the USA in the late 60's, and I GUARANTEE you that you didnt' know they were Canadian!

Sum 41- "In Too Deep". These guys from Ajax, Ontario (love the town name) are dangerously close to being alot like Blink 182. Is it just me? Take a look at the video and decide for yourself.

LEN- "Steal My Sunshine". We all knew the song, but these guys had to be smoking something because the conversations that take place during the interludes are quite frightening. Just as frightening as a band this bad being a worldwide hit.

Corey Hart- "Sunglasses at Night". Corey Hart (not to be confused with the Milwaukee Brewers outfielder of the same name) is obviously from Montreal. Seriously, would any English speaking person have this much trouble and look so deliberate while singing? Watch the video and tell me if I am lying. I don't know why Mr. Hart wore his sunglasses, I really don't think his future was too bright.

Avril Lavigne- "I'm With You". After we have gone over the 1960's, 70's, 80's, and 90's image of Canadian acts, our northern neighbors decided to show us that they aren't all potheads, cheesy dancers, fat guys fronting bands, and guys we can't understand, but they are absolutely off their rocker crazy crackhead look like they are 15 girls!!!!!! Wow Avril Lavigne seriously scares me.

The Northern Lights- "Tears Are Not Enough". This "We Are The World-esque" answer to the American charity song as well as the UK's "Band Aid" is a feable attempt to show that "Canada still cares". Too bad none of us do. Oh well, $100 to anyone who can name every single person in this video. If you don't get them all, don't cry and think you will get the money, tears are not enough.
