LSU URec Random Quote of the Week- "A good coach would have thought it out"

These immortal words were spoken by the legendary John Drew in the fall of 2005 to our good friend Eric "big red" Eskew after getting a forklift stuck in the mud near the SAC. Always a "busy body" when it came to "minor disasters" of the outdoor facilities type, John had to give his opinion as a former football coach and former football player. After comparing Melvin to Jim Brown, John had to tell us all how he really felt, thanks John, this Bud's for you.

Previewing Wrestlemania 23

Sunday Night, April 1, the WWE takes center stage at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan for its largest spectacle of the year, Wrestlemania 23. With this being the largest grossing wrestling event in history already, it certainly can live up to the hype that has been building with a slate of matches that will surely be out of this world. Here is a quick preview of the matches:

Kane vs. The Great Khali- This rivalry goes back to The Great Khali telling Jonathan Coachman that he "wanted more competition" and interrupting the Big Red Machine's match with King Booker at No Way Out. I like Kane in this match not only for his recent re-enacting of his Jacob Goodnight character from "See No Evil" even carrying the hook around, but mainly because The Great Khali is a horrible wrestler.

The ECW New Breed vs. The ECW Originals- This 8 man tag match pits ECW Originals Rob Van Dam, Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, and Sabu against Elijah Burke, Kevin Thorne, Matt Striker, and Marcus "The Alpha Male" Cor Von. The originals have the upperhand in experience and working as a team, but I like the New Breed in this match just due to their pure strength and agility as well as athletic ability. This rivalry was bred by Mr. McMahon going on ECW and crowning Elijah Burke the "new face of ECW" and thus embarassing the ECW originals. Should be a very personal match.

WWE Womens Championship- Melina vs. Ashley Massaro- This match features MNM's Melina against Playboy centerfold Ashley Massaro- just watch the boobs flying- this match will suck.

WWE United States Championship- MVP vs. Chris Benoit- This should be another boring match- MVP is extremely overrated is going against the rabid wolverine Chris Benoit who will surely dominate- go to the bathroom during this match.

Money in the Bank Ladder Match- Mr. Kennedy vs. King Booker vs. Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton vs. CM Punk vs. Edge vs. Finlay- Ok this match will be awesome. 8 men in a ladder match to grab the briefcase which holds the contract for a chance to challenge for any championship in WWE at any time within the next year. Mr. Kennedy is a very talented villian who has a great chance to win. The Hardys have taken part in many ladder matches and always have a chance just due to their death-defying style. Finlay is a great brawler who can win. Randy Orton is a former world champion who will be gunning for Edge. Edge is a former winner of this match and will surely try to "outsmart" the other wrestlers. I definitely like CM Punk in this match. The straight-edge superstar is a fan favorite and will come ready to win to Wrestlemania.

World Heavyweight Championship- Batista vs. The Undertaker- The Animal vs. The Phenom. This great match will probably go down as an all time great. Batista is a great fighting champion, and will face the 14-0 Deadman after he won the Royal Rumble which earned him a chance to wrestle for any title at Wrestlemania. While I love Batista and have never been a big Undertaker fan, I am gonna go with the Deadman in this match and think he'll have one more title reign and go to 15-0 at Wrestlemania.

WWE Championship- John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels- This match between the World Tag Team Champions was born after Shawn Michaels' attempt to win the Royal Rumble was ended by the Undertaker and thus wanting him to take "one more shot" at the title. However, while controversial in his own right, he's going against the most controversial world champion of all time in the chain gang soldier. These two have had very intense moments in the past weeks, and was culminated Monday Night on Monday Night Raw when HBK gave Cena a sweet chin music and then basically saying "you can't see me". This explosive match could very easily get out of control.

Battle of the Billionaires- Umaga (representing Vince McMahon) vs. ECW World Champion Bobby Lashley (representing Donald Trump) with Special Guest Referee "Stone Cold" Steve Austin- One of the most anticipated matches in WWE History with a special stipulation- the loser of this match gets to have his head shaved by the other billionaire. I like Lashley in this match because not only did Umaga show he was beatable at both New Year's Revolution AND The Royal Rumble when he was beaten both times by John Cena, but Bobby Lashley, who has been the victim of tricks and dirty tactics by Vince McMahon in the last few weeks, is hungry, and I really think that Donald Trump has something up his sleeve. Also, there's always Stone Cold- has he really forgotten about being screwed over by the corporation? As he said Monday night "what he says goes".

Happy viewing, I'll be on the way back from Texas.

Pokey Chatman out as LSU Women's Basketball Coach

I have been wanting to write about this for a while. In a shocking announcement two weeks ago, Pokey Chatman resigned as LSU Women's Basketball Coach in the midst of loss in the SEC Championship game and after going to 3 straight Final Fours. The winningest womens coach in her first 50 games (47-3) in women's basketball history, the resignation just WREAKED of controversy, and from the very start I smelled a rat. Two days later, it was confirmed that Coach Chatman had resigned due to the uncovering of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a former player. Insiders in Baton Rouge have let me know that this "former player" is none other than former NCAA Player of the Year Seimone Augustus. Rumors like this had swirled around Pokey Chatman for years from being an assistant with the late great Sue Gunter. It is truly a shame for such a great coach of a great team at a great school as well as such a popular person in the Baton Rouge community has stepped into such big controversy.

Apparently the "rat" in the program was assistant coach Carla Berry. According to several sources, she was under pressure from several current players to go forward with the accusations to Athletic Department, with the threat that they themselves would go forward with the accusation to the press as well as the school, thus hanging the whole coaching staff out to dry.

Coach Bob Starkey, the mastermind behind the motion offense at LSU for years has taken over the helm for Coach Starkey and has led the Lady Tigers back to the Final Four for a 4th straight year, and only the 4th time in NCAA history that has occured.

I sincerely hope that the Lady Tigers can rebound from this mess and find a way to get back to normalcy and continue their dominance in the SEC and in the NCAA.

LSU URec Random Quote of the Week- "Who in the hell is John Drew?"

This quote, from the fiery and always outspoken Janice Watson, was in response to Eric Eskew's response to her requests for keys to the building so her and her husband, Mr. Robert Watson could get into the building and do their jobs. Eric told her "we gotta clear that with John Drew." Sick of hearing about how everyone was scared of John Drew, Mrs. Watson finally had had enough. She simply asked Eric "WHO IN THE HELL IS JOHN DREW?". My thoughts exactly. She also added "I'll cuss him out like I'll cuss anyone else out." Gotta love it.

Beyonce Knowles is beautiful, but she better not ever get to thinking she's irreplaceable. Please shut up and find a new song. As you see, I put her to the right, to the right and wrote everything about her to the left, to the left.

Random Movie Review- #33 "The Butterfly Effect"

Last night I watched this great movie on FX, and it reminded me of how awesome, scary, and intriguing I found it the first time I saw it when I watched it the first time. This unbelievably written, very dark film just lacks production perfection and also has some pretty weak acting, but it's still great.

The movie takes it name from the Ray Bradbury short story, "A Sound of Thunder", which deals with chaos theory, which is also called the butterfly effect, and in which a man travels back in time and accidentally kills a butterfly and ultimately changes the course of mankind.

The plot of the movie revolves around Evan Treborn (played by Ashton Kutcher for the majority of the movie) who is faced a mental condition that causes him to blackout at traumatic moments in his life. The incidents are all serious, and his ability to not remember them haunts him. Evan is best friends/lovers with Kayleigh, his neighbor (played mostly by Amy Smart), and after several dangerous and one deadly incident with her, her brother, and their other friend :enny, Evan moves away and promises Kayleigh that he'd come back for her.

Still haunted by the effect of the blackouts, Evan begins reading his journals that he kept at the advice of his psychiatrists growing up. Reading one of the entries, he finds that he could go back to the moments where he blacked out, and returns to an incident where his dog is killed by Kayleigh's brother, and is able to see the whole incident. He is also able to go back and see the deadly incident that caused him to move away and also caused their friend Lenny to become a catatonic schizophrenic. Evan then returns home to see Lenny to find that he is a still a version of his childhood self. He also goes and finds Kayleigh and starts asking her about another blackout when he was forced to be in a child pornography film with her by her abusive father. Visibly distraught, Kayleigh leaves him and later commits suicide.

Evan then begins making jumps in time to change the past so that everyone he is around has a happy life. His first jump he makes takes him back to the time of the film where he talks Kayleigh's father into leaving her alone. Kayleigh and Evan are together and both in Greek organizations in college, but her brother has become even more of a deliquent and hunts down Evan, and Evan kills him in the ensuing struggle. Evan then is put in prison.

In his second jump, Evan jumps from prison to the blackout where his dog is killed. After talking sense into George, Lenny uses a shard of pipe that Evan gave him to cut the bag open to kill George. When Evan wakes up, he is back to his normal college life with his roomate Thumper (played by Ethan Suplee- who was GREAT as a supporting actor and one of the few good acting performances), but Lenny is put in the same mental institution that his father is put in, and Kayleigh has turned into a dirty prostitute.

In his third jump, Evan jumps back to the accident that caused the death of a woman and her baby and attempts to keep it from happening, thus saving Lenny, and never forcing him to be catatonic, and never killing George. Instead, Evan is severely injured in the blast losing both arms and becoming paralyzed. George winds up saving the woman, and in turn becomes very religious. Lenny is Evan's college roomate and is with Kayleigh. Evan's mother has terminal lung cancer.

After attempting suicide and being saved by George, Evans jumps to the film blackout again in an attempt to save Kayleigh and to get rid of the dynamite as well in order to prevent the accident. Instead, he accidentally kills Kayleigh and is put in the same mental institution. It is here that Evan learns that his father, that suffered from the same condition, as able to make jumps using photo albums. Because at this point, the journal entries from any point past the film didn't exist, so he had to find another way to jump.

In a last ditch effort, Evan uses old family films to jump back to the time he met Kayleigh. He threatens her and tells her he'll kill her and her whole family if she ever comes near him. As she walks off crying, he whispers "goodbye".

However, when he wakes up, he is Lenny's college roomate, and George and Kayleigh have gone to live with their mom and have had happy lives.

The movie ends with Evan and Kayleigh running into each other in New York City several years later. They make eye contact, but Evan keeps on walking.

This movie is extremely intriguing and will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is a great script and the plot twists (many were not mentioned) make for great writing. However, the inconsistency with several aspects of the characters and the jumps, as well as very obvious production audio/visual mistakes take away from a rather great quality film.

However, the main thing wrong with this film is the lead actor. Let me stress this- THIS MOVIE WOULD BE IN MY TOP 10 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME IF ASHTON KUTCHER WAS NOT THE LEAD ACTOR!!!!! Kutcher is anything but genuine and believable as the film's hero, and it's almost laughable to see a "comedy" actor try to take such a serious role on, especially when all of his film and tv roles have been foolishness. Suplee and Amy Smart are the two bright spots in the casting, which I thought was rather poor.

However, this movie is definitely worth checking out if you are thinking person. Sit back and don't miss any details.

Goodbye, Joe Horn

It was announced yesterday that the Saints have released all time franchise receptions, receiving yards, and TD receptions leader Joe Horn. The 35 year old Horn was asked to take a pay cut and refused, and asked to be released. A fan favorite and always consistent receiver, Horn was one of the few holdovers from the 2000 NFC West Championship team on this year's Saints roster. Horn, who was also hampered by a severe groin injury this season, missed the last 4 regular season and both playoff games. This, plus the need to resign Marques Colston and the need for a starting cornerback on the free agent market led to this decision to let go one of the all time great Saints. Joe Horn is a LOCK for the Saints Hall of Fame, and I seriously think we will be seeing his jersey #87 retired hanging up at the top of the Superdome in the future. While I understand the reasoning behind Mickey Loomis's move, it still hurts to lose such a great person and great player, as well as a very important part of the New Orleans and gulf coast community. My all time favorite memory of Joe Horn was in 2003 when Jay Money and I were in New Orleans to watch the Kings and Hornets play. Being right after the "cell phone incident", the Hornets mascot did a spectacular dunk and then pulled a cell phone out from under the goal and gave it to Joe Horn in the crowd. We later saw Joe Horn at Harrah's Casino with Jerome Pathon playing roulette, and he seemed like a very personable, laid back guy. A year later, I met Joe Horn and had my picture taken with him (which will be added to this post soon). He also, in a sign of great irony, signed my cell phone "wood #87", for his nickname, Hollywood. Goodbye, Joe Horn, you'll always be a Saint. I truly look forward to the day Saints fans will once again stand and cheer for you again.
